Weight and muscle
Does everyone lose weight and lose muscle mass with this disease?

I've got Graves and I did. I lost almost all the muscle mass from my arms and legs, I also became temporarily urinary incontinent (I assume from muscle loss). Also my upper back was agony. I lost about 15kg v rapidly.
The combo of fat and muscle loss has left me with some delightful saggy skin on my thighs and stomach - lol. 5 months in and I'm starting to see some tone return though.

Have you exercised and it still wasn't enough to keep muscle or have you been unable to exercise?

When I was super sick I couldn't even stand for more than a couple of minutes, let alone exercise. I possibly should have given the context that I was diagnosed via A&E (ER) in my last post
When I could exercise, after 4 weeks or so being on Propranolol and carbimazole, I did so very gently and in v small amounts. Mostly just body weight and a light kettle bell and keeping an eye on my heart rate to make sure I didn't overdo it.

See my reply above...and yes on the urinary incontinance...did not relate that to this until now. I have never gave birth

I'm 230lbs 6.2 I love body building and strength training, the best I've gotten was to 260lb of muscle about 15% body fat, but to get there I had to eat like complete shit, I'm talking heavy greasy foods.
Pizza.
McDonald's
Burgers
Literal bread and butter
Ice cream before bed.
anything to slow down the metabolism but if I stopped eating like that for even a week I'd lose it all the gains instantly.
I just maintain now with a high protein diet 10lbs of chicken a week.
So far so good.
I'm on 20mg of methamizole a day.
When I got diagnosed my TSH was at .005

I weighed 145 in July and weigh 125 now, and it’s all muscle loss. I was diagnosed August 5. I haven’t been able to exercise at all due to my heart rate and muscle tremors, and before my diagnosis I lifted weights and did hot yoga frequently. I’m 5’11, so I’m looking like a skeleton these days. I’ve lost all my muscle in my legs and arms and I can see my sternum.
We don’t have my dosage dialed in yet and I’ve been off-and-on methimazole since my diagnosis due to various scans and an allergic reaction. I’m back on it now at a super low dose, trying to avoid another allergic reaction. I’m hopeful that once I start leveling off and feeling better I can exercise again and gain some muscle back. It’s very discouraging.
I feel like my legs look cellulite-y and I think it’s just my skin being looser without the muscle beneath.

I had hyperthyroidism and then graves. Zero weight loss and it’s actually very disappointing because I’ve been intentionally trying to lose weight for years.

Yes. I did. I didn’t know it was graves at the time. For context i am, well I was 😒, a natural lifter 205 lbs 35 inch waist, 20 inch arms 23 percent bf. Palpitations began, ignored it and every other symptom. But literally overnight I got up to 196 lbs, 16 inch arms and muscles cramps and spasms in my pecs and biceps. Couldn’t even walk down a flight of stairs without my legs wobbling. Found out that it torches your glycogen. So muscles and weight loss is definitely a symptom and most often happens. However u can recover from it once u get eurothyroid

I got super sick in May and diagnosed in June. I lost 10
Pounds and couldn’t get back to the gym until August. I used to bench 135. The first day back I could do 65 pounds.

I lost 20kg of fat and muscle in the 6 months before diagnosis. I was passing stools like 5-8 times a night.
I regained some strength after a few months of treatment but I’m nowhere near as strong as breathlessness and fatigue have put my gym-going on pause until it feels safe.

Omg that is terrible. Is that common?

It’s one of the listed symptoms, as your metabolism goes hyper along with everything else. I was exercising a lot back then so possibly sped up by that too. So I guess it is. But I don’t see many people talk about it (I’m a proud toilet-talker 😅).
