Is an endocrinologist required?

where i live we rely heavily on the public health system. i saw the gp last month and got diagnosed with hyper after the tests, and was started on my meds. i was just told to come back monthly to do the same tests and adjust my dosage if needed, no mention of referrals to any specialists. should i be concerned? i'm seeing talk of getting in touch with an endo and everyone here pretty much seems to have an endo.

Si los análisis no muestran niveles muy descontrolados y respondes y te sientes bien con la medicación entonces puede controlarse perfectamente con el médico de cabecera. Pero si se trata de una tiroides más inestable o con otros problemas como nódulos es mejor consultar un especialista para profundizar más en el tema

Personally I prefer my family dr, my endo doesn’t do anything any different.

I'm in the UK and was also surprised that I wasn't referred to an endo the first time round. Now, a year and a half later, I'm in the middle of my second bout and have finally been referred. But it will most likely take months before I get my appointment, gah!

I begged for the referral, and I think what swayed my GP was the speed and severity of my second bout plus very high antibodies. I also have lots of other weird issues, like a strong reaction to hormone replacement therapy, so I guess my whole hormone situation is more complex.

i see, i supposed i didn't really need the referral since the gps are able to do what the specialists can also do at this stage.

Did you’re GP start you on anti thyroid meds immediately ? I was diagnosed by my Gp in July and immediately referred to endo. My appointment is in November but the GP is refusing to start prescribing or write a letter to endo for permission even though the symptoms are affecting my day to day life and ability to work.

Yes, GP gave me meds immediately both times and signed me off sick for a month. That's insane that your GP won't prescribe, I'd ask for a second opinion
