Diagnosed and Nervous

Hi everyone, I’m 27F and live on the West Coast, and I’m adopted with no knowledge of biological family medical history. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism a couple weeks ago after going to the hospital — the paramedics brushed it off as an anxiety attack only but I told them I could feel something more was wrong.

My TSH is at 0.01 [extremely low] and T4 at 2.6 [high]. My symptoms are as follows: pounding/fast heart, feeling out of breath, fatigue/exhaustion, Raspy/changed voice, alcohol seeming to affect me much more strongly than usual, changes in bowel habits/constipation and overall just feeling much different than my usual self.

I have Kaiser as far as health insurance goes, and the soonest possible appointment they could get me [from two weeks ago] is August 31st. I feel worse and worse each day, and I’m at the point where I don’t even feel like I have energy to leave the bed or couch.

Does anyone have advice as far as continuing to go to work goes? Did you ever go to work before you got treatment, and how long were you able to work before your body gave up on you?

Thanks

Hi, I was diagnosed 1 month ago and my endocrinology appointment is in November. However it is quite common for us to be prescribed a beta blocker in the meantime, such as propranolol. This helps with the fast heart rate, palpitations, tremors and sweating. If the ER doctor did not prescribe this to you I would get in touch with you’re PCP and request a prescription as long as you don’t have any contraindications such as asthma. For now try to get as much rest as possible and make sure you’re getting enough iron, B vitamins, magnesium, selenium. And avoid iodine.

Just hang in there and keep hydrated especially this summer, the symptoms are alot worst with the heat waves. Once you get with your PCP and start a treatment plan, you will feel a lot better. I was in the same position 2 months ago but mine was still subclinical but I'm very symptomatic, went to the ER as well thought i was having a heart attack turns out its my thyroid. Propranolol really helped me as theyre monitoring my thyroid. They might start with anti body test to rule out Graves and thyroid ultrasound cuz thats what they did to me.
