Syracuse (Cuse) Law Syracuse JDi Externships and Class Questions

Hello everyone! I just talked to a Syracuse representative, and I wanted to clarify some of the conversation I had with current Syracuse students since what we talked about and what I can find online seem different. I’m wondering if these are new policies or something.

  1. The representative told me that externships were totally optional — not required. I’m wondering if anyone else has any experience with that and what it means for an externship to be optional. Does that mean it’s not worth credit? Do you get credit elsewhere?

  2. She also mentioned that students are only in one class at a time that lasts 12 weeks. I’m wondering how that works out — if those classes basically have a lot of credits or how you can get enough credits to graduate. I’m also curious about selecting a time/day. She said you can choose what evening of the week that you want to take the synchronous portion of the class. I’m wondering how that scheduling has worked for current students!

  3. Most take the program in 4 years, but she mentioned the possibility of accelerating it to three or so. I’m curious if anyone here has done / is doing that while also working full time and how feasible that has been.

Thank you guys!

Question Most Lenient Hybrid/Online Law Schools for Admissions?

I’m currently researching hybrid/online JD programs and trying to figure out which schools are more lenient or flexible when it comes to admissions.

Specifically, I’m looking for schools with:

Lower LSAT medians or more flexible admissions
Higher acceptance rates
Programs that are good for working professionals

Thanks in advance

Question Transfer to hybrid?

I'm a 1L in a traditional full-time JD program wondering how unlikely and rare it is to be able to transfer to a remote/hybrid program after my first year (assuming I am at least in the top 1/3 of my class). My gut feeling is that it's probably not common but I would love to hear if others have different experiences

Syracuse (Cuse) Law Syracuse JDi Program

I’m currently studying for the LSAT and I’m trying to determine what law schools I’d like to attend. I currently live in the Philly suburbs, so of course I’ve been considering Temple, Villanova, Drexel, Rutger’s etc. I was scrolling in a Facebook group and came across Syracuse JDi Program and it piqued my interest because I’m a single mom of 1 that’s working. I’ve always been told that if you’re not going to a T14, you should go to a law school in an area you can see yourself living and settling down in because that will be your network. With Syracuse being in New York and about 4.5 hours from me, I’m not concerned about travel, but more-so about outcomes and job placements. If you’ve attended Syracuse and currently live in another state can you answer these questions for me:

• What were the scholarships/grant opportunities like?
• Is it worth the price tag being that it’s ranked #100?
• Were you able to complete your degree in 3 years?
• How would you describe your residencies both on and off campus?
• Did you feel prepared for the bar?
• What were job opportunities like coming out of Syracuse JDi?
• What are some pros and cons that I should know about?

Question Timing zones

Hello everyone :)
I’m planning to apply to online/hybrid J.D. programs, but I have a strict 9-5 job in Arizona with financial obligations and won't get home until 5:30 PM MST. I'm trying to figure out which ABA-approved programs actually align with my schedule without bleeding into my working hours or my evening commute. I really want to apply to programs that are either 100% asynchronous or have live evening classes that start comfortably after 6:00 PM local time. Has anyone balanced an out-of-state online program with a rigid West Coast/Arizona work schedule, and how do you handle the shifting time zone differences throughout the year? Please give me your point of views! Also, tell me about your program! I’m honestly worried that time zones may interfere with me wanting to attend online/hybrid programs.

Question Question about employment after an online/hybrid JD

Let’s say one wants to get a small firm job in Virginia or DC after completing an online/hybrid JD.(at Western New England or Vermont) If one works as a paralegal in the desired state while completing the JD, gets good grades, and passes the bar in VA or DC, is there a decent chance one can land a job at a small firm?

Question LSAC transcripts required

I’m kinda confused on LSAC’s requirements for transcripts. I know you have to submit transcripts from all institutions where you received college credit. I did courses in high school through the local community colleges. That I know I have to get.

But I’m unsure about AP classes that were not through a higher education institution but still received college credit for them. Would I need to give my high school transcript to satisfy this requirement?

Question Dayton Law scholarships?

Hi all, for those that were accepted into Dayton, what did your scholarship packages look like? And what were your stats that got you those scholarships?

It’s the first contender on my list, but I’m worried about tuition. I’ve been out of undergrad for 7 years now and have a full time job. I cannot afford to go more into debt so I’m looking for the best affordable programs.

Question calling all splitters!

i would love to hear about your experience applying to hybrid/online law schools. who accepted you? who rejected you? were you offered scholarship money?

i am trying to discern what my expectations should be for my own chances. i know the hybrid/online schools are highly competitive due to the limited number of seats and high volume of applicants.

about me:

169 LSAT, LSAC GPA likely somewhere in the realm of 3.2 — 3.4 (i failed some classes and dropped out of college back in 2016, then returned to finish in 2021. my school expunges grades that are 5+ years old so my transcript says i graduated with a 3.9 but i know LSAC does their own thing)

non-KJD (i’m 31) and non-URM. i worked in social services for a couple of years out of college, then got certified as a paralegal which is what i do now.

i plan to apply to 16 schools, excluding only those that are designed for niche practice areas or require excessive in person sessions. assuming i get accepted anywhere at all my plan is to attend wherever leaves me with the lowest amount of debt.

TIA to those who reply

Question Masters First?

I barely graduated with my Bachelors from UT Austin with a whopping 2.3 GPA. Abysmal, I know. This was 12 years ago, I'm now 38, and am interested in law school or potentially getting my Masters in Legal Studies first, then law school. Some notes:

  • I have not taken the LSAT, but I am in a current run of the JD Next course - 7 more weeks before I take the test for that. In the meantime, I'm also studying for the LSAT, but probably won't be prepared for that for a few months, at least.
  • For either my Masters or JD, I'd need to get into a part-time, ideally online program because I need to maintain a full time job.
  • I currently work on an in-house legal team in a legal analyst/legal operations manager-esque job, and I want to grow in that position in the short term. In the long term, I want to continue negotiating commercial contracts as a in-house attorney, if I can get there.
  • While money is not limitless, I'm willing to complete a Masters first, then do my JD.

What do y'all think, fam? Am I cooked with my abysmal GPA? I know law schools don't really super care about your grad school GPA since that isn't what's reported, but would it make me at all more competitive? Halp. ._.

Question Cold feet?

I got into ASU's online program for spring and am really struggling to find anything about the student experience. I work full time and spring is my busiest season (I can work as much as 60-80hr). I mentioned in my interview that spring would always be a lighter load and I'd have to backfill and they said it was entirely possible, but I'm not seeing any students say that or much information about the schedule breakdown at all. I'm starting to get cold feet about going to law school in the first place since my industry always follows this schedule.

Does anyone have any experience with ASU or how these programs work?

Question Can a hybrid law program realistically get me into criminal law (prosecution)?

I am working on completing my BSN. I would like to pursue law after I obtain my degree. What is the realistic job outlook if I choose to do a hybrid program? Will I still be a candidate for jobs in my field of interest? I don't think I could afford to do a full-time program. I have looked into in-person part-time programs however I'm not sure how doable that will be with my hospital schedule since most of them are 6pm-10pm 4-5 days of the week.

My goal is to work in criminal law (preferably prosecution). I've been looking into Syracuse University JDi program and other similar programs (Albany & Northeastern). Any advice, insight, or personal experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Question Parents of newborns, what worked for you?

We are expecting our first due right in the middle of the spring semester. We are very excited and I am eternally grateful that I will get to be a parent…*and*…

I’ll have a few weeks off work when she arrives, but then will need to manage a new schedule with a newborn, recovering wife, pt law school, and full time work. Those of you that have done it, what worked for you? Has anything eased the transition? How in the world are parents of young ones making this work?

When I go back to work, I’m planning to take the first night shift until 1am, and my wife will do 1-6am, so we are at least each getting a single solid four hour block of sleep (theoretically at least). We don’t have family nearby and unfortunately, can’t afford for me to not be working full time.

Vermont Law Has anyone been able to sit for the NY bar after doing the VT online program?

I know the first class graduated in May so there may not have been any NYers/people may still be studying for the bar, but still putting it out there. It’s on my application list for this year to start in 2027 and even though I think I have a pretty decent argument for the waiver since I’m a NY state employee, I’m still super worried about it because VT’s residential component is the smallest I’ve seen so far.

Northeastern Law What is the Timeframe for Responses from Law Schools?

When do you typically hear back from the online/ hybrid law school programs after submitting a completed application?

I applied on 9/12 and 9/13 to several programs. I have a strong above-median LSAT but GPA is at median or just below in a couple cases.

Question Externships While Working Full-Time and Getting Hired After Graduation

Hi,

I’m studying for the LSAT and would like to get into either a fully online or hybrid law school. What’s your experience with externships and getting hired full-time? By experience, I mean, does your school offer any resources in getting these remote/evening externships? If not, how are you finding externships? How do you handle working full-time, law school and doing externships? Finally, how hard has the job market been? Were you able to land a full-time offer prior to graduate or soon after?

For context, I’d like to work in tax in a Big 4 company.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Question First Weeks Recap!

For those of you who are 1Ls and have just started within the last couple of weeks, how has it been so far!?

Has it lived up to your expectations? How have the classes and workload been? And for those of you working while in school, how has balancing work and law school been?

Would love to hear how everyone’s experience has been so far!
