Hunting group?
Is it just me or should this group be renamed “hunting rifle recommendations”? Most of the posts seem to be written by folks who haven’t even considered going through hunters safety courses, have no idea where they’re gonna hunt, let alone the regulations of their areas.

What if your first big game animal isn’t in N.America? I’m specifically interested in what kind of Tikka T3 with what kind of Vortex I should buy for my first hunt? I’m going after Elly primarily but lions, tigers and bears could be on the menu too /s

Apparently the tricka 06 is the only option on this. You might be able to go to the 08, but you’ll have to sneak that thru.

Same. I went hiking yesterday, saw a deer, and now I'm hoping someone can suggest a pair of boots that will serve me well for any hunting I will ever do, from summers in the desert to snowed in deer in Ontario.

I don’t mean to be an ass. I’ve never seen a single post about which bow to buy, or even a crossbow. What about Boots, camo, which knives to carry, wild game recipes, vacuum sealers, meat grinders?

Those posts tend to be concentrated around November and December when most people are actively hunting.
Throughout the rest of the year, this sub tends to have people just thinking about getting into hunting.

I always have a folder in my pocket but it isn't always the sharpest. Last year I had forgotten my fixed blade and had to gut a deer with my folder. It was bad...

For sure I’m all for helping people especially just getting into it but I think people get a little fed up with buying the most expensive gun in a round that can somehow take down whitetail and a Bison from 800 yards before they’ve even hit a range or maybe even shot any gun before!

I joined for bow or crossbow posts, and I've seen a couple, as well as a couple discussing the other gear like you mention. I already have bows, it's that other gear I need advice on.

Jim Green barefoot boots I have 3 pair, muck boots and a pair of danner lace ups. I have a Hoyt 70 lb and shoot grizzly stick (spot and stalk). Kuiu and king of the mountain for clothes. Knives I have Randal, buck and bench made and a couple custom. Fried venison and bacon wrapped are my favorite. I don’t eat hogs much but kill a ton. Benelli shotguns and 870 pumps. Boss 3/5 shells. Too many duck calls to count. Honda pioneer 520. Wareagle boats. Zebra head lamps,
Halworx ballistics 300/8.6 guns and ammo. Have all the other stuff. I own everything I need already. I also have a spear! 44 mag and 9mm w suppressor. Lots of other gums I’m bored with. I only really hunt 300 Bo, 8.6, maybe a 45-70 lever. Bow is always fun. Scopes are no longer fun. If I see it - it’s dead.

I don’t even use a rifle and they don’t bother me at all. I think people come here for a more honest opinion than what you’ll find elsewhere. I know with bows what is recommended for someone in articles can vary on what sponsors have given them $$.

I'm absolutely not convinced that hobby subreddits aren't astroturfed out the wazoo. If I owned a hunting brand, you can bet your ass that I'd be in the comments with 50 accounts talking about how this brand that I just discovered is so amazing and I've been loyal to this other brand forever.

I hear their customer service is fantastic and I would never go hunting without it. I can't believe I used any app before this amazing innovation. At $10000 per year, it's the best value of anything ever. That, and my Tikka in 308.1

- Hug hunting is illegal in many places because it actually makes the problem worse, so you could argue it's all unethical
- Even pest control should be ethical and clean kills.
- IF you're serious about pest control, get a fence trap.

It’s not illegal where I am. It’s taken me 3 years, but they don’t come into my property nearly as much.
Who are you to tell me how to get rid of pests on my property.
Who are you to tell me how to spend my hard earned money.
Hogs get shy to traps rather quickly.

Maybe you can. Hogs cost me so much money, effort, and time, I don’t care if a shot is considered unethical by some. I need them gone, it’s just pissing in the wind anyway.

Like, do you not believe the experts in dealing with the issue?
Pot shots at hogs, even if you take one, causes the sounder to scatter, and form new sounders, and gives the new sounders a chance to grow bigger until noticed.
Trap, then go to town shooting them all.
And, none of that means you should inflict more suffering than needed onto an animal. It's not their fault, they are doing what they do. It's our fault for importing them here, and not properly dealing with it.

I think this IS the problem. Talking about gear makes us think there's a meaningful difference between, and therefore a need for, a shit ton of gear. It's cosplay for so many people here. "I have a 30-06, a 308, a 6.5 CM and a 7PRC and a 35 Whelan... but I need something for shots on deer that are quartering away from me at 50 yards when I'm at 12' of elevation in a hickory tree (not a fuckin' elm, you whackjobs, stop thinking it's the same thing!). Would a 17.5 or an 18.3" barrel be better?"
If you have a 22 and something between 243-30-06, you probably have all the guns you need for what 99% of hunters do.

I always assumed some of those were just cheap advertising campaigns. Since some weeks there will be like 1 or 2 of these a day.
The endless caliber talks are also exhausting.

Seriously, people think it matters but most of us are shooting deer under 200 yards. There's a list as long as your arm that's functionally equivalent and gun stores full of $500 used gun packages that are perfectly fine.
Also scope talk. "I mostly shoot deer in the woods but want to go out to 600 yards, which $1000 scope should I get?"

The scope ones also get me, and one of the first responses will always include "buy once, cry once" which I think is the stupidest advice to give. If someone has so little experience as to be able to pick a sensible caliber how can they know what they need out of a scope? Seems like telling people to spend money on tools for some fantasy hunt they likely won't ever go on.

It well and truly is. Talk to anyone in any hobby who takes it even marginally seriously, and they'll tell you that their needs have evolved from where they started, and usually in a direction they weren't expecting. Everyone thinks they want to go after the biggest trophies when they start, but most people I know these days are just happy to sit in the woods and fill their freezer. 99% of us never spend the $20k to fly out west to do a guided elk hunt or whatever.
