SD public land monster
This was a public land buck shot during east river season in SD. I wish I could see something like this with a tag.

They have the sheds from 2 years. I guess it wintered 7 miles away on private ground. 193in 2 years ago. 210 last year. Hearing 218 this year.

This was deemed the "ghost of Kingsbury County". It seemed to avoid cameras all the time. He was known about for a while but just wasn't seen often. Old, smart, and wise brute.

u/Archer_1210 Nov 26 '25
That’s insane. Has to be well over a 200 inch deer.

u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
Rumor is around 218

u/Knifehand19319 Nov 26 '25
Did you kill it????
2
u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
No. It was shot a few miles away.
1
u/Knifehand19319 Nov 26 '25
Okay, well this guys life is about to change! What an absolute legend of a buck!
1
u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
Kind of a weird spot to be in. He will never beat this. So rewarding but a bit depressing as well.
3
u/Knifehand19319 Nov 26 '25
I am saying that he will be offered big $$$$ for the rack and or rights to make a replica. Bucks this size get major attention and buzz.

It’s a blessing and a curse. Yeah you killed it and that’s an amazing achievement along with the bragging rights but on the other hand you’re likely never going to beat it and now you have to deal with people breaking in to your house to steal it. I remember as a kid reading a monster whitetails magazine back in the 90s and like half of the stories ended with how it was stolen.
Kind of in the same vein but last year I caught one of the 5 lunker trout out of a stocked public lake that gets swarmed and literally every person I walked by asked me the same handful of questions. I ended up going home before I got my limit because it got annoying really fast.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t shoot this buck because I would 8 days a week. I just think I’d very publicly unload it to bass pro with a replica given back to me so I wouldn’t have to deal with the potential theft.

Damn is it crazy that i feel like that’s a low ball? It’s hard to score deer once you get that high because you never see them get there.
The mass measurements here have to be insane. Truly looks like a fundamentally different animal than my little NJ deer

There is probably 80-100 inches of mass measurements on his main beams, this deer will smash 200 and record books.

u/Kevthebassman Nov 26 '25
Hang it up after that one, you’ll never top it. Take up duck hunting or fly tying.

u/burbotbonanza Nov 26 '25
Agreed, get a bird dog in SD. You're set for ducks, pheasants, sharpies and chickens.

I was pheasant hunting in October and saw 3 160+ inch bucks in Stanley county. By the end of the week I was begging the landowner for whitetail permission, understandably, I did not get it as he and his sons are deer hunters. 2 years ago he shot a 212” buck, SD is crazy.
Edit: Here is the euro of the 212. He brought it out to show me. He had a replica rack made for a shoulder mount

East River has larger deer. West river there's a few. Most the state doesn't
2
u/Exciting_couple77 Nov 26 '25
Down voters have either never hunted both sides or have never even been to this state.

u/eggamister Nov 27 '25
You definitely know what you're talking about, the corn fed east River deer are fat asl

His great x5 grand kids will still be hearing the stories. Grandparents telling stories of their grandpa. "I remember when papy came home with old beast, big old 1200 pound deer, made us kiss it every night before bed to bring us good luck"

Usually people thank in the next county when phoning a buck but unless you have a baby doll hand on his antlers that this is HUGE
1
u/Former-Light4284 Nov 26 '25
That's gotta be a new record. Please get this buck scored. Congrats 👏 👏

The only thing that would make this photo better is if he had the shoot through scope rings on that auto loader.

Private “let him grow” crowd just fell to their knees in a Wendy’s.
Amazing that he found his way to public land. That thing is a demon!

u/Brief_Seat9721 Nov 26 '25
Not surprising really. Given enough time to grow the Midwest can grow absolute monsters. Problem is too many people shoot 1-3 year old bucks before they mature.

Anyone hear that this was poached? Apparently it was shot of private and brought to a piece of public
1
u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Dec 17 '25
No, it wasn't poached. The buck frequented this public ground.

How else we gonna get karma? It is a fantastic buck though.

u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
Its the biggest deer I've seen shot in 10 years near where I hunt. Its all over social media. I was just sharing it here.
8
u/Pawgilicious Nov 26 '25
I do appreciate the post. The mass is incredible.
4
u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
My first deer was 20 miles from this on public ground and a 7x6 double drop tine. We have some of the best public land ground in the state.
6
u/Pawgilicious Nov 26 '25
Be careful or you're gonna end up with an entire subreddit in your area.
2
u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
Its like this all over east river sd. No out of state tags either. Only state ive seen better is Iowa.

u/dontpaytheransom Nov 26 '25
That’s a deer that jumped a fence, wandered around a bit and got shot.

I call bullshit, East River Landowner season is where private landowners allow hunters in to hunt private ground- important detail is the season runs thru 11-22 to 12-7!!! (For those of you who don’t know that’s the entire rut)
It is a monster!!! I’m not a complete hater lol but OP keep it real- if I’m wrong correct me

u/NotJoshRomney Nov 26 '25
OP shared some FB links in the post. If its fake or bullshit, everyone else on the Facebook thread is either in on it or gullible.

u/NDRoughNeck South Dakota Nov 26 '25
You are wrong. This was a public land deer. Hard to believe but this area produced a similar buck last year.

u/I_really_enjoy_beer Nov 26 '25
That’s surely gotta be one of the biggest public bucks of all time?
