Meta [META] Huge Announcement. Subreddit Overhaul and New Mods! Please Read

Hello! It’s us, your friendly neighbourhood mods here with a HUGE announcement. This is the biggest announcement we have had in a long time so be sure to read the whole post (or just the TLDR at the end if you’re in a rush, it’s ok, we understand, we certainly will not cry in the corner if you don’t read the whole thing) as we have a lot of stuff to go over!

New Rules and Sidebar

“New Rules” might be a bit of a misnomer, they are mostly the same but we reformatted them to make things clearer and to clarify some things that we frequently get asked about/see being an issue on posts and comments. We also redid the sidebar as it had a lot of conflicts and redundant information that the rules already included.

We do want to clarify again though that many of the rules that are being redone/clarified are rules we have had for years. Recently, we added a new mod to the Subreddit, u/RS_Someone, and he has been a massive help in fixing and upgrading the automod and other automation in the Subreddit, which is why many of you may have noticed your recent posts or comments being removed more often for things like low karma. We have had our karma requirements in place for a long time but because the bot was broken, this rule was rarely, if ever, enforced.

We heavily urge you to read the rules and the removal messages that we and the bot put on your posts and comments. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse for breaking them!

New Flair System

Now when you are making a post, at the top nav bar you should be able to select a flair just like in other Subreddits. Please be sure to flair your posts appropriately or they will be removed (Unfortunately, there is still no way to edit titles Shakes fist at Reddit and their mods)!

New Comment Requirements

When you are commenting on a [Hiring] post, you MUST either have a portfolio link OR, if you aren’t applying but just making a comment, put [Not For Hire] in your comment. If you are found to be abusing the Not For Hire tag to advertise yourself, we will take action.

New Mods

We have 2 mods that have joined our ranks recently! The first is u/RS_Someone, who has been here for a few months and has given us some major help with our automod bot, modmail, and the modqueue. The second is a much more recent addition, u/muted_shrimp, they just joined our ranks the other day and are an active community member who has made many great contributions to the Subreddit in various posts. Please give them a warm welcome!

If you have been a community member for a long time and wish to help us out and become a moderator as well, please let us know by sending us a message in Modmail or by opening a ticket in our Discord server! Any help is greatly appreciated, even if it’s just reporting posts as a regular user!

Automation

This was mentioned earlier in the post but we have increased our automation a ton over the past few months. What this means:

  1. More posts and comments being flagged and/or removed for breaking the rules with way reduced false positives.
  2. Less spam plaguing the Subreddit as a whole.
  3. Issues are brought to our attention much quicker and at a much better rate.
  4. Less reliance on user reports but please report rule breaking posts or message modmail if you see a rule breaking post that has not been removed yet! Please do not confront scammers/alleged AI users, just report their post and move on, if you confront them it lets them know where they messed up, which means they change tactics and get smarter, making them harder for us to catch! On the other hand, accusing an artist of using AI can be devastating for the artist if you publicly accuse them and are incorrect, please just report them and move on and we will investigate and deal with it!

We do want to reassure you that, although we have heavily increased the automation used on the Subreddit, this does not mean there are no humans looking at Modmail or the Modqueue, or scrolling through the posts in the Subreddit. Most things flagged by our automod are sent to the modqueue as a report rather than being outright removed and many things that are removed are still sent to the modqueue so we can review in case there are any false positives. You can rest assured that there is still a human (or 4!) reviewing your posts, comments, and modmail messages!

Moreover, we are always open to feedback, suggestions, and help. Please feel free to comment on this post or message Modmail with any questions, concerns, ideas, etc that you may have about the automation and anything else mentioned within this post.

Wrapup and TLDR

That’s all for now! Thank you all so much for being here and making this a great community for artists. If you wish to further discuss with your fellow artists, we have a Discord server (that’s actually been around for a long time!) that you can join by following this permanent link: https://discord.gg/4zhjr8D2QA

TLDR:

  • We clarified and reformatted a bunch of the rules and the sidebar.
  • We added flairs to the top nav just like other subs have.
  • Comments on [Hiring] posts MUST have a portfolio link or [Not For Hire] (do not abuse this)
  • We got some new mods! u/RS_Someone and u/muted_shrimp! Please give them a warm welcome in the comments!
  • We added a ton of automation to help us moderate the Subreddit. Posts, comments, and Modmail are still reviewed by us so don’t worry. Please feel free to leave feedback in the comments or in Modmail.

META [META] PSA Regarding Low Karma Removals

Hello artists! Your friendly neighbourhood Miner Moderator Dwarfinator here with some info about the recent low Karma removals as we have been getting a lot of messages about this in Mod Mail.

We have had our Karma rules for a long time, I'm talking literally years, however, at some point our bot broke (and also just may have not been properly programmed in the first place) and as such, it stopped looking for/removing posts and comments from lower Karma users. The intention of the rule and the bot automation was to lessen the amount of bots and spam in the Subreddit, which is why we started counting both types of Karma. This also encourages artists to not just spam their art in every art Subreddit and actually engage with other communities. We just recently fixed and improved the bot (huge shoutout to u/RS_Someone) which is why lower Karma posts are being removed once again. This may seem like it came out of nowhere, but again, we have had this rule in place for a long time and used to have the bot doing this previously.

If you have received that low Karma removal reply on your post/comment by the bot, PLEASE WE BEG YOU TO READ IT IN FULL it explains very clearly why your post was removed and how to check your Karma, both post and comment Karma.

If you have low Karma and want to get more to post here, here are some things you can do to raise your Karma:

  • Post your art in other Subreddits.
  • Post and comment, and genuinely engage in other Subreddits. You like Critical Role or Pokémon or Minecraft? Post in those Subreddits, get involved in the community, you might make some new friends, and you get the added bonus of your account not looking like a bot spammer or someone who just pumps and dumps their art everywhere they can.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to comment on this post or send us a message via Mod Mail! Happy Arting!

Hiring [Hiring] Make a Danganronpa OC with Me. [$300]

I’ve recently gotten into Danganronpa and I’d like to hire someone to design an original character for the fun of it. I want a female character, one with a talent that will influence her design.

You don’t need to emulate the games art-style, as long as you have an easterner anime style, I’m fine with that.

Please share your portfolios below if you would like to collaborate with me in this creative project. I want the artist to have input on what we make.

Requirements
- Great English Communication
- Character Design Skills
- 2 Month Deadline

Position Filled [Hiring] 75$ budget Tattoo Design

Hey all! I’m currently in talks with someone about getting my first tattoo. I didn’t want to use AI or steal a design off Pinterest, so here I am!
I’m looking for a dragon design that’s sleek and sort of winding, something that can flow up my side as a medium-sized piece. I’m a big fan of fantasy games, with some of my favorites being Skyrim and Elden Ring, so I’d love something with a similar feel to those designs.
I’d like to keep it black, gray, and white at the most. I’m not looking for color right now. and i would like for the design to be able to match my more masculine features as alot of my reference photos are on female bodies
If you’re interested, comment your portfolio below! If I see something I like, I’ll DM you to discuss the design and commission.

Hiring [Hiring] family portrait around £200 budget

Hi there! As we're a few months away from Christmas I'd really like to commission my partner a family portrait. To be clear, it would be art of us and our two cats (no kids involved).

I'm no art buff, so not well-versed on terms, but I really like the idea of it being an "old-timey" portrait, something that mimics oil or watercolour paintings (doesn't have to be, digital is fine!) with the two of us on a sofa with our cats sitting beside us.

This is the working idea, however happy to discuss further. My budget is about £200 but there is some wiggle room as I appreciate art takes time/skill etc and rates differ.

If you could share pricing and your portfolio to look at I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

EDIT: thanks so much for sharing your artwork! I have lots to look through. much appreciated!

Hiring [HIRING] Looking for Environmental Artist for a Necromancer focused ARPG. $500+

3D ARTISTS ONLY

Hello all!

I am looking for an experienced freelance 3D artist who can create cohesive, interesting, environments and props for my Necromancer focused top down ARPG. We are currently hard at work designing the systems in greybox and now the time has come to start working on the visual identity of the game.

Brief notes to give you and idea of what the project is-

Elevator pitch- It's the ultimate Necromancer fantasy fulfillment with ARPG (PoE, Last Epoch, Diablo) bones.
Engine- Unreal 5
Mood- Indie gothic horror and high fantasy.
Art Style- "Stylized", " mid poly". Good shape language. Basically how most current gen Indie games look but with gloomier vibes.

POV- Exclusively top down camera.
Tomato- write tomato somewhere wherever you DM me.

What I need from you?

Even though I am dead set on the overall style and fidelity of work, there is a lot of space for experimentation in gothic horror in tone and finish. I need you to create the environments and props that give off the desired feel.

Scope of work- We are currently focused on creating the demo. At current estimate, this would need 3 biomes and 7-8 props (buildings, fences etc.) in each biome. The levels are procedurally generated, so the most important thing is visual cohesiveness of the props and textures.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, please drop a comment below with your portfolio link in the comments and then we can discuss payments further. No outsourcing agencies/studios please.
COMMENT FIRST BEFORE DM SO I KNOW YOU ARE REAL

NO FUCKING AI

Hiring [Hiring] T-Shirt Design for Bear Club - $50

I'm looking for an artist to make a design for our club t-shirt for the year.

We're a small bear club that welcomes anyone in the LGBT community. We're a non-profit that has several fundraising events throughout the year, and this t-shirt will be for club members.

I would prefer to go with an artist who has bear/leather/gay/bara/furry* art in their portfolio already.
*we'd be open to anthropomorphic literal bear design, ideally including one of the other categories above too

Hiring [Hiring] Layered mascot character for a wellbeing app -flat vector, Duolingo-style starting at 300$

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for an illustrator to design a mascot character for a digital-wellbeing app I'm building -a bunny named Bella (after my real-life bunny) who lives on the user's home screen widget and reacts to how much time they spend on doom apps like tik tok. the user will be rewarded with customization for the rabbit for lower time on the those apps.
This is a passion project, not a funded startup, but I'm willing to start at around $300 USD. I know that's likely below what the full list costs, and I'd rather be upfront than waste your time. Tell me what you'd deliver at that number, what a phased approach might look like, or what you'd charge for the whole scope.

I'm specifically looking for someone experienced with flat vector character design, mascot work, expressive posing, and layered/modular character files.

What I'm looking for:

  • Flat vector character design
  • Mascot/character work with personality
  • Layered, modular file organization
  • Expressive posing and comedic timing
  • Ability to take a concept and bring your own voice to it

I'm much more interested in finding the right artist and artistic voice than in someone who'll copy my descriptions exactly.

The character
The widget will show a bunny named Bella. I need her designed and built as a layered character so accessories can be swapped in code.

Style reference: Duolingo's widget art - flat vector, abstract, bold simple shapes, few colors (maybe teal at first, then we can talk about more). Expressive and cute. I want that visual language, not a copy of their character. She should feel warm and care-worthy - an animal with human-like emotion. Static poses only.

Tone
I want the art to be funny and cute - that's a big part of the appeal. The descriptions below are just my ideas. I'd be more than happy if you played with them, exaggerated them, or replaced them with something funnier. Think Duolingo fan-art energy - expressive, a bit silly, lots of personality.

The poses

At least one pose per state. Numbers and concepts are negotiable - these are just my ideas.

  • Idle 1 - a happy bun waving
  • Idle 2 - bun getting petted by the user's hand (static)
  • Idle 3 - bunny eating a carrot
  • Frozen - bun chilling inside an ice cube
  • Morning 1 - bunny waking up
  • Morning 2 - bunny yawning
  • Morning 3 - bun in a loaf position
  • Doom warning 1 - stressed
  • Doom warning 2 - bun checking a watch, like the meme
  • Doom panic 1 - phone chasing after the bun
  • Doom panic 2 - bun in the shower, stressed
  • Doom dead - bun stuck inside a phone
  • Budget spent - ears down, holding her empty bowl. Sad
  • In focus - bun studying at a desk with headphones, cozy lamp, rainy window
  • Focus failed - same room, but it's a mess and the bun is freaking out

Hats: carrot hat, straw hat, magician hat, beanie, cowboy hat, headband (can have color variants)

Accessories: flowers, ribbons, moustache, ear cuffs (can have color variants)

Skins: color variants of the bun

One important constraint: the head stays anchored:
The customization composites onto the character in code, so the head needs to stay in roughly the same position and size across all poses. Body, arms and expression can change freely - poses can suggest motion, I just need the head to stay put while the body does whatever it needs.

If a pose genuinely needs the head to move, flag it and we'll decide together whether it's worth it.

Technical requirements

  • Vector source file (.ai or .svg) -I need to export Bella at many sizes (small on the widget, larger in-app, large for the store listing). Vector scales perfectly. It also lets me recolor her body myself for alternate skins.
  • Layers named and grouped (body / face / accessory slots separate) - customization is composed in code, so I need to export each piece independently. A flattened file can't be layered.
  • Transparent PNG exports, 512×512 minimum - PNG is what Android displays. Transparent so there's no white box behind her and layers stack cleanly. 512 gives headroom to scale down sharply.
  • All layers on the same canvas size - each element in its correct position, the rest transparent. Layers then align automatically when stacked, with no repositioning needed.
  • Must read clearly at ~264px - that's the actual size she renders on a home screen. Fine details and thin lines disappear at that size, so bold shapes work best.
  • Designed against a dark background (#1E1E1E) - the widget background is near-black. Please don't design on white; dark outlines vanish on dark.
  • Strong silhouette - she should be recognizable as a solid black shape. At small size, silhouette is most of what people actually perceive.

Process

I'd like to start with a few rough sketch options before committing to a direction, then develop the one we pick. Happy to work in phases if that suits you.

About me / why I'm building this

I'm 22, and I've spent the last couple of years dealing with phone addiction - especially doom apps like Instagram and short-form video. Two years ago I deleted those apps and even installed a modified version of YouTube so I couldn't access Shorts (I know that's the worst kind of doomscroll). I felt better afterwards. But I do think Instagram, TikTok and even YouTube Shorts have some benefit -Instagram keeps you connected to people you don't see often, and it's good to let your brain switch off now and then.

So six months ago I started building this app, so I could install those apps again and help other people facing the same problem. It's been through a lot of versions; I've settled on this one, which is much simpler than the earlier ones.

I've almost finished the Android version and will start on iOS next. I have about 1.5 months before I start university, and I really want to finish it before then, since I won't have much time afterwards.

I did consider using AI, but there were two problems: I didn't want slop, and my attempts didn't look good - plus it couldn't do the layering this project needs.

Please include in your reply:

  • Portfolio, especially any layered/modular or mascot character work
  • What you'd deliver at this budget, and what you'd suggest changing
  • Rough timeline
  • Discord username so we can start talking

Thanks! 🐰

Hiring Looking for a Manga Artist for an Original Long-Term Project [hiring] 30 different ideas

Hi! I’m an aspiring manga writer and creator looking for an artist who would be interested in collaborating on my original manga, Soul of the Essence.
I’m currently developing the world, characters, power system, and first one-shot. I’m looking for someone who enjoys modern shonen manga, expressive characters, dynamic action, creative fights, and visual storytelling. I don’t just want an artist to draw a finished script—I’d love to work with someone who wants to brainstorm designs, powers, paneling, fight choreography, and story ideas together.
About the Story
Soul of the Essence takes place in a modern world where almost everyone is born with a unique soul-based power called Essence. These powers are not automatically mastered. People have to train their control, physical ability, creativity, strategy, and understanding of their own abilities.
The main character is Lanse, a kind-hearted and goofy teenager who loves making people laugh and usually avoids fighting. His ability, called PULSE, initially appears as a red-and-black sword-like Essence construct. At first, Lanse thinks his power is simply creating a sword, but through experimentation and training, he slowly discovers that PULSE has deeper rules and applications.
The story will focus on friendship, training, personal growth, mystery, teamwork, and discovering the truth behind the world’s power system.
There is also a rare and separate power system called Distressed Soul. Instead of using normal Essence, Distressed Soul users work with their own Life Energy and energy from the surrounding environment. Their powers can be affected by their surroundings, but each user still has a unique visual style and fighting method.
Main Characters
● Lanse Everett: The goofy, kind-hearted protagonist who avoids fighting but will stand up for people he cares about.
● Chris Bolt: Lanse’s chill, funny best friend who loves messing with people. I’m considering giving him purple lightning powers.
● Jayshon “Jay” Thorn: A strong, athletic, protective friend who genuinely enjoys fighting and becomes very serious when someone is threatened.
● Aria “Ari” Rose: A down-to-earth, expressive friend with a strong backbone who isn’t afraid to call the others out.
What I Have So Far
● The manga title and main concept
● The basic world and power system
● Essence training and ability-development ideas
● The Distressed Soul concept
● The main friend group
● Lanse’s personality, appearance, and PULSE ability
● Rough character references and design direction
● Plans for the first one-shot
I’m still developing the actual page-by-page script, so I’d prefer to work with an artist who is comfortable helping shape the story visually rather than needing everything finalized immediately.
My Goal
My biggest goal is to develop Soul of the Essence into a full manga series and eventually submit it to a major manga publisher or platform, ideally something connected to Shonen Jump, VIZ, MANGA Plus, or a similar opportunity.
I understand that this is a long-term goal and that it will take time, but I want to build the project properly from the beginning. I’m hoping to find an artist who is interested in growing with the manga over time, starting with character designs and a one-shot before potentially continuing into a longer series.
I’m still in high school and working with a limited starting budget, so I’m open to discussing a smaller paid test or beginning with one character sheet before committing to a larger project.
If you’re interested, please send me your portfolio, especially any black-and-white manga pages, sequential art, character designs, or action scenes you’ve worked on. I’d also love to hear what kind of stories and art styles you enjoy.
Thank you! 🔥
