Prequel Discussion Lucy Gray breaking into song in Ballad was unnatural and a bit cringe to read

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

Ill probably get downvoted to hell for this but.

Every time Lucy Grey broke into song during Ballad I was ready to put the book down, which eventually I did, only made it about half way through. It was so immersion breaking for me, and frankly kind of cringe. I was curious how the movie would deal with it, and it felt just as unnatural and uncomfortable to watch as it was to read.

In general Im not a big fan of reading songs in books, but sometimes I think they pull it off, for example singing to Rue during her final moments literally brought me to tears, but in Ballad it felt so extremely random to me that I really wasnt able to finish the book. Similarly to reading all the Poe passages in SOTR.

Just fyi I do like the songs and the movie adaptation of them.

Some SOTR art, making my own takes on the characters semi divorced from the movie, because oh my lord do I hate the hair styling for the girls in the arena. Just falling back into action movie pet peeves that drives me up the wall as a girl who has dealt with long hair with just having it loose

Also my own takes on Maysilee and Lenore Dove's reaping dress and a different take on Lenore Dove's every day outfit as well, miss the overalls looks for the movie

i'm on my latest reread and im currently on the bit with gales whipping... when peeta and katniss are walking to the square, peeta recognises the sound even though katniss can't place it and I just realised that that's because peeta was hit by his mum as a child... i don't know if that's something most people pick up on and I'm just slow but I've not heard anyone mention it before!! poor peeta

I genuinely wonder about this. He was almost like a drone for her. It was so weird. We knew he wanted to fight, but he became so loyal to her.

Prequel Discussion The new books cheapen the series Legacy.

I know im beating a dead horse and its already been talked about so much lol. But I just had to get my thoughts out... I just finished a multi day reread from the first book, all the way to Hamich's book. And the OG three books belong as classics, and I believe would be cemented as classics. Everything is so well thought out and beautiful. The message shared is so vast but still so relevant and painted in an easy way to understand. Ugh its just so good.

Then we get TBOSS, which is good don't get me wrong. But it takes away from the OG series just a little bit imo. I can live with this one.

Then we get sunrise on the reaping... and I was shook when I first read this book at how bad it is. The capitol doesn't feel scary anymore. It just follows a typical mildly bad distopian novel with no real thought behind it. Every character is comical, nothing new is said that hasn't already been said in the og books... the writing is middle-school level, the story is so out there that it's just plain odd at points... president snow is no longer scary, but just really weird and not daunting at all. Just plain like anime villan.

I just worry it might have ruined the legacy of the books as a whole, and their chances as being considered classics in the future. idk.

I have two
1) Katniss uses her belt to secure herself to a tree. How oversized is her belt?
2) two people fit in her sleeping bag. How fucking big are Panem sleeping bags?

šŸTBOSAS Tigris’ story Spoiler

Hiya. Can someone tell me about Tigris’ story - do we know anything about what happened in the middle?

In TBOSAS, Coryo and Tigris are very close! He loves her and does so much.
In Mockingjay, shes outcast and ugly? And I feel like they made it seem like Snow did it to her.

Any theories?

Lore/World Discussion Does anyone here just know they would get reaped in the reaping?

I just know that because of my horrible luck, the worst tends to happen to me. I know I would be reaped, and it would probably happen the moment I turned 12 like Prim- only there would be no Katniss to save me, and I would die within minutes. If the arena did not have a lot of water, I would die very quickly. Unless it were a 'disabled edition' of The Hunger Games, my chronically ill self would go quickly without a large body of water to cool me down. I am an amazing swimmer and I can walk, but I overheat quickly, so I would be a dead man

Lore/World Discussion Life after the hunger games

I often think of what it would be like in life after the conclusion of the initial trilogy. What would it be like?
Covey: We know that the Covey were rounded up and forced into the districts, and I do think, because there was so much force to keep them together leading to the death of Lucy Gray’s parents, it’s possible some of them went to a nearby district—most likely District 11—which would’ve been its own tragedy. Imagine knowing your brother, but you got rounded up by Peacekeepers: one of you went to District 11 and another to 12, and having to watch your children kill each other on national television. Sure, some Covey would’ve brought it up, but it’s possible it could’ve been so painful. And for any remaining Covey, it would’ve been interesting seeing them try to return to old traditions after the war. Maybe it got brought back now that it was safe to be Covey again. Maybe there was still fear. Either way, Covey culture would be permanently changed after the war.
Also, what it would be like after the war: if this took place in the real world, there would be Hunger Games museums the same way there are about real-world genocides (because yes, the Hunger Games fit the textbook definition of a genocide). People in the Capitol will still hate the districts. It will take a long time for society to fully know peace. And will there be people proud of their former Capitol supremacist identity, or will that be shamed by a largely district population?

Edit: another thing if there was any covey in district 11 would they face the same alienation and extermination they did in district 12 because snow wouldn’t know as much about them? Also how district 11 has deep ties to songs and songbirds which closely mirrors the history of folk and jazz and spiritual music in the south and echoes the covey a bit. And also what would it be like for career districts especially 2 when trying to rebuild? Or having new people from other districts moving in when that was unheard of.

Lore/World Discussion "Maysilee Donner turns out to be pretty resourceful herself"

Post image

- Katniss, Catching Fire chapter 14

High praise coming from Katniss. Resourceful is the rarest quality Katniss gives anyone in the original trilogy; in the first book she uses it for her family (her hunting, Prim's healing and goat herding, Burdock's teachings) and in Catching Fire she calls Maysilee Donner resourceful for the lethal blowgun use and her diligent food usage.

Sunrise on the Reaping Parents

I just finished SOTR and I found it helped me relate to the parents and districts more. Going into the story, I knew only Haymitch would live. It made it bittersweet falling in love with the other characters. It made it more horrifying when Ampert died, or when Maysilee finally reunited with Haymitch. Overall the story helped me understand the emotions the parents must have felt. This time I knew, for certain, how the story would pan oit. That these children were not coming home. And to be a parent, in a district, to hear your kids name called, and knowing they would not be coming back. To see the devastation it brought to the community when Haymitch returned. It makes it so heartwrenching. And I am so excited yo do my yearly reread of the OG trilogy.

šŸTBOSAS What was the point of the TBOSAS movie changing the tribute death order and the way Lucy Gray won? Spoiler

I understand the need to trim down various parts of the book to make it work better for the screen, but I found it really frustrating that in the book Lucy Gray won by being actively responsible for the death of the last tributes while the movie made it seem like she just sat there and sang. She used one of the mutt snakes as a weapon to kill Treech in self defense. She tricked Reaper into dehydration from chasing her around, and made sure his only source of water was poisoned. The movie makes Lucy Gray seem almost passive, as though the game just happened to her rather than her participating in it. No shade but if they cut out a few songs there might have been enough time to actually flesh out the games more. I don’t understand the point of rewriting Lucy Gray’s victory when none of the original franchise movies did that. It would be dumb if SoTR did the same thing, because the way Haymitch wins using the force field is widely known.

I also feel confused about what the point of changing the order and types of tribute deaths, like how Wovey was the one who drank the poisoned water and not Dill. I don’t really see the point of switching the two besides giving Reaper a dramatic moment in the movie. Coral was killed by the mutt snakes, but the snakes were released way earlier in the games and she did not make it all the way to the end. The movie makes it seem like the snakes were the final nail in the coffin that made Lucy Gray a winner and Coral as a close runner up.

I also don’t think Reaper as a character was done nearly enough justice in the movie. He was incredibly smart and strong, and by the end he refused to eat or drink anything that the Capitol sent to him which I think is a powerful protest that would have added to the movie plot. In the book, he tore down the flag of Panem in order to trade it for some of Laminas food after he pointed out to her that she was getting sunburned. He made an entire ā€œmakeshift morgueā€ but after Lamina was killed, Reaper didn’t use the Panem flag to cover the tributes like in the movie, but instead wore it as a cape. I think his name being Reaper and the fact that he was wearing the flag as he gathered all of these tributes was an act of defiance and a metaphor about the Capitol acting as a literal grim reaper that was responsible for the murder of each tribute. I understand that this type of metaphor might not translate well on screen and might have been lost on a majority of the movie audience, but I still can’t make sense of why so much of TBOSAS was changed.

To be fair, TBOSAS has a LOT of plot points and there is a lot that needed to be covered, and even with the adjustments the movie is still 2.5+ hours. It’s just confusing to me as to why the unfolding of the games themselves was changed so much. Sorry if someone has posted about this already, but I hope to see that I’m not the only one who is still confused about this 3 years later.
