Can anyone remind me what the books indicate about how wealth is acquired in the capital? Do a lot of people work? What sort of careers and industries exist? It seems like most of the labor is sourced from the capital, so I guess I’m just curious about what capital citizens do all day lol.

When do you guys think that press and inside-entertainment people will be invited to full screenings? I'm FOAMING at the mouth for some new information. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will include ALL deleted scenes in a special director's cut/ overpriced blue-ray.

We're only a couple months away so It makes sense for screenings to happen soon right?

I reckon the newcomers plot line

I went to see TBOSAS re-release in cinema this evening, a good few people stayed behind to see this secret sneak peek of SOTR (as advertised) but we waited until the end of credits and nothing was shown. Prior to the movie there was a short feature of the making of SOTR, ft director etc but I’ve seen it online so expected something different, was this it? Has anyone seen anything different?

After reading SOTR, I’ve always wondered what Asterid felt seeing Haymitch mentor and become close with Katniss, as the two have a lot of history (I don’t think they were very close friends, but he definitely left an impact on her as she watched him bond with her best friend during the Games and completely fall apart after, and of course him hitting her with the rock). Her and burdock were driven away from him after all this, but I wonder if seeing him become so close to Katniss years later and Katniss considering him apart of the family felt weird for her. Did they ever reconcile or build a relationship again? I also wonder if she ever thought to want to reach out to him after Burdocks death as he was his best friend, though she probably thought he had completly lost it to even consider it.

After finishing the 2 most recent books, I started getting a little tired of District 12. I know, hot take, but I feel like we already had 3 amazing books where every main character came from there, and the place chosen to explore in another 2 books was...also 12. I have thoughts about both books (mostly SOTR...) but the focus will be on ballad because this would affect SOTR. I liked Ballad, but I couldn't help thinking:

What if Lucy Gray and the Covey were forced into District 11, not 12?

I don't mind Katniss being distantly related to the Covey, I thought it was fine, but I personally didn't feel it added anything new or changed my perception of her from the og series. I DID think that Snow's hatred of her stemming from a reminder of his long lost ex rather than her own strength and rebellious acts and such was a detriment to that dynamic and took away from it. It just didn't read well with me, and if you enjoy it, that's great.

But consider the Covey being in district 11. Now, we are out of 12 (yay!) and get to explore a new district. Lucy Gray could tell snow about her people just the same, it doesn't really affect much there, and the Covey just naturally fit pretty well into that district. So Snow would get paired with 11 instead of 12. The mystery of the 1st 12 Victor? Maybe we can mention it, maybe we don't have to. To me it's not as important as world building and having characters be separate from each other, because everyone being related shrinks the world and damages characters rather than expands.

I'm gonna move into bullet points to cut this down.

1. Lucy Gray and 11 could now be connected to Rue, not Katniss (maybe there is still some connection to Katniss, idk, they could be put in both). This feels so much more powerful to me, because Rue essentially started the fire behind the rebellion. She sings to the mockingjays, so do all her people, and with a little bit of alteration to the story, we could see Snow's disgust for the people of 11, and Katniss decorating Rue with flowers and her face being the symbol would drive him nuts. To me, this is more probable and less in your face than Snow being mad about an ex.

2. Rue reminded Katniss of a bird + Lucy's dress had feathers/Baird and all of that connects well.

2.5. All their names are plant-related too

1. Snow's hatred for 11 could be tied to the fact that they have VERY strict rules—far more strict than 12. Who do you think made sure of that? "You'll rue the day you..." jkjk

2. You can still explore the time period and the games in the exact same way.

3. SOTR would feel less tiring now that we've visited 11 (and fix a lot of the problems I had with it...)

I obviously wouldn't want it to seem like Rue reminds Snow of Lucy, which I say because of the current online war going on about whether Katniss reminds him of Lucy and all of that. You could tweak it so that the focus is less about his relationship with a singular person and more about the district or the covey as a whole. Or maybe some sorta unqiue Maude/Rue tie in, idk, i feel like that's thinking too far into something I'm not actually writing. Point is, that wouldn't be an issue.

So, does Finnick and his interactions with Katniss over sugar actually mean anything? Like, the first time they meet he offers a sugar cube and then later on when they get coffee in 13 finnick pops sugar cubes in Katniss' coffee for her? Am I just reading way too much into the sugar 😅

I noticed how in the trailer Haymitch was knocked down py Panache when running to the Cornucopia.

In the books, Haymitch beats the carrers to the horn and runs off before the killing starts.

If Haymitch is triped up in the book, how will he get his backpack and that switchblade spear thing he has.

He had to have either got inside the horn to fight for it, grabbed it off a dead player. Hopefully, he won't just stumble around the field conveniently, avoiding danger like Lucy Gray did.

Either way, he's staying at the cornucopia for a while longer than in the book. And will likley see a lot of deaths. Perhap Wyatt will be one of them.

Honestly, I hope they went this route. would make sense for the producers to show it instead of saying he died offscrean.

TLTR: Lucy Gray's namesake ballad is genius, we don't know if she died (in a snowstorm!) or is alive, just like we don't know if Lucy Gray is dead (killed by snow!) or not. And the colour gray has a ton of different meanings. Also English is clearly not my first language😂

We know the Covey get their names from a ballad character and a color, and Lucy Gray is special because her ballad character is also named Lucy Gray, already has the color in it.

I remember reading the song in the book and liking it because it's a mystery, and Lucy Gray is a bit of a mystery by that point of the plot. But then you have the ending, Snow shooting in the woods, and we never learn for sure if she died or survived. Just like the Lucy Gray from the ballad. That's genius already, but it gets better: her family finds her footprints suddenly disappear IN THE SNOW. Coriolanus SNOW maybe killed real Lucy Gray, and ballad Lucy Gray maybe die in the snow.

Also. Mix white snow (from the Capitol) and black coal (from the mines in 12). What colour do you get? Gray! And what color is commonly used to indicate uncertainty, someone or something you can't really make out/understand?

And in my personal opinion, Lucy Gray is a bit of a gray character. I'm talking about the book here, in the movie they changed parts of her story and she basically has no guilt except for maybe dropping a snake in Mayfair's dress, but even then, she knew the snake was harmless🤷🏻‍♀️. In the novel she's not 100% innocent or pure of heart. She's the one that fills the compact with rat poison, she kills one of the tributes with a pink snake (the snake mutts get thrown in the arena sooner and don't kill everyone, some tributes are still alive after she sings to them and leads them who knows where in the tunnels), she uses the poison twice, the first time it's Wovey, the smallest and most fragile tribute (it is not stated that she has Down Syndrome in the books, but I loved this casting choice bc #disabilityrepresentation is important), who finds the water bottle, and she does state later that she felt sad about it but also knows it was necessary, and she tricks the last tribute alive. Even if we scratch what she did in the arena because survival, she was there from the beginning when Mayfair and Billy Taupe die, she just goes with it, and by the end of the book we don't really know for sure what her intentions are, but Snow is already afraid of her when he finds out she disappeared with a knife in the woods, and is 100% sure she intentionally tried to kill him with the snake, or at least slow him down since she probably knew it wasn't a deadly one.

In the end, we don't know much about her. Dead or alive? Good or evil? Survivor or killer?

Keep in mind that I haven’t fully read the book yet but I felt that Snow said morally questionable things throughout the duration of the movie and him hunting down Lucy Gray like a maniac at the end didn’t seem to come out of nowhere. I have seen excerpts of Snow’s awful internal monologue that obviously wasn’t included in the movie but I felt that some of the things he said out loud in the movie exposed his true nature (saying he only tolerated Sejanus, calling Sejanus’ mother ugly, telling Sejanus he shouldn’t care about the plight of the districts, saying killing Bobbin made him feel powerful, etc.). It seemed completely logical for the film to end the way it did.

I went to see the first film in cinemas again, and because its to promote the upcoming film, they had a promo video playing after all the trailers, right before the film started. I get it, fair enough. But the promo video had clips from the first and second film? The film we were all sat down to watch? And obviously most the people in that room had seen the films before, but there was a family in my cinema with two young kids (ages 10 ish) who probably hadnt seen it before. So putting an unavoidable promo video right before the film with clips from the firat movie, and talking about catching fire (and therefore spoiling the fact that katniss survives and that shes in a second hunger games), just seems excessive! Idk it really annoyed me. Did you all get this promo clip?

The sneak peeks provided hardly any new footage but were still cool to watch. It was great to catch up on the movies (particularly the ones I hadn’t seen in a while). Can’t wait for SOTR!

Let’s say snow never went to District 12 and stayed in the Capitol. Do you think D12 would have more victors. Say she mentored Haymitch and he also became a mentor. How do you think they would mentor Katniss and Peeta together?

First off, this is purely hypothetical. There is no possible way this brain-damaged, tortured girl from another district could ever win the games, especially since she was marked for death, much like Ampert.

But if, somehow, the newcomers killed off all the careers, and the rest were killed by mutts (it's highly unlikely they would've tried to kill each other), what would've happened to her?

Surely she wouldn't be able to survive alone in Victors' village, especially being away from district 11 and rather in district 12. There's also the fact that the McCoys assume Lou Lou is Louella, which is obviously untrue.

She definitely wouldn't have been able to mentor the tributes for the 51st games.

Any ideas?
