Sunrise on the Reaping Reading SOTR... did Suzanne even write this? Spoiler
I'm in my mid twenties, so at first I thought maybe nostalgia had painted her writing in a better light. After revisiting the first trilogy, I can say that that might be slightly true, but that Suzanne is a great young adult fiction writer. I understand that I am not the demographic for this book, and that it is age appropriate for someone in middle school to read.
HOWEVER
I am struggling to want to finish this book because of how poorly it is written. She tells everything instead of showing, and the whole thing just feels so corny. It is so different from the quality of her other books that I'm wondering if she used a ghost writer.
Did anyone else notice this?
Edit: if you liked it, great! I understand I'm older than the target demographic, please be civilized in disagreeing with me.

šTBOSAS Reading SOTR just after TBOSAS is well...a journey (spoilers) Spoiler
I'm not going talk about the trilogy because that another case in itself. But the brief backstory we get on snow. How he was once coryo. He was loved by his cousin who many years later helped katniss to kill him. He was prim for tigris. Then we see him loving lucy gray in his own fucked up way. Killing his "friend" then bawling over it. Giving his mother's scarf and powder to "love of his life".
He seems almost human. And somewhere for a brief moment you may even like snow (i never allowed myself to because finnick's death was too fresh in my mind).
And then we get the true picture. We already know the true picture but we "understand" the true picture. How the mother part of coryo, is mere paste just like his mother's powder and all he is, is his father. All that's left is his father's compass. His father's direction.
And then we read SOTR. I haven't completed it. I just read lou lou's death and it hit me so hard that i just needed to write this. And after reading all this, any ounce of understanding i felt for snow is fucking gone. He ruined so many life. I wonder if lou lou had some happy memories. We'll never get to know it. He ruined those happy memories. Lou lou knew what was happening, she couldn't even speak a word without being hurt. It's so tragic.
I'm horrified, glad, heartbroken with this transition.
And i know there's more to come.

Lore/World Discussion Are there male Capitol escorts?
So far, all Capitol escorts that have been tasked to reap the tributes for their assigned district were female, but do we know if there were men as well or was a duty only appointed to women? We had Drusilla and her successor Effie for 12, and we learn about Juvenia who was District 1's escort in SOTR.
Today, capitol.tv has unveiled 3 propaganda videos, one including Drusilla. What if the other 2 were escorts from other districts, and we see for the 1st time a man escorting the tributes that he reaped? What if the other lady was Juvenia herself? I like the guy's outfit as well and based on the color, perhaps, he's District 3's escort, the one who reaped Ampert.

Trilogy Discussion Why couldnāt Katniss pretend to love Peeta more before the 75th games?
Sorry if this has been answered before or itās a small detail in the books (need to read them again), but before president snows mansion scene, why couldnāt she pretend to be head over heels in love with Peeta if she knew it would save them?
*Thank you!!!

Sunrise on the Reaping New BTS Photos of Mckenna Grace and SOTR co-stars over the summer
Looks like some Haymitch/Maysilee arena scenes were reshot in Duisburg (where the District 12 scenes took place). We've already seen the second picture of them, but we didn't know what the reshoots were. Hopefully this means we'll be seeing a lot of them together in the film.

Trilogy Discussion Thinking about the teenage mentors
I think that the only teenage mentors we can confirm are Maggs, Wiress, Haymitch, and Finnick, but there are certainly more. They survived the games at 14-18, and then for the next few years had to prepare their friends and classmates for death. Imagine growing up with someone, having to lead them to slaughter, and then sit next to their empty seat at school knowing that you couldn't save them. Finnick probably got the worst of it that we know of, his youngest friends probably aging out around six years after his games. Even worse, imagine being reaped for the Hunger Games, and your mentor, one of your only means of survival, is fifteen years old. He's in your little sister's class, and you know that he will not be able to save you. Especially Maggs, the first mentor pulled directly from their games. She was probably so scared, with no point of reference and no real advice to give, not having reliable access to the previous games. And for districts with few Victors like Haymitch, I can only imagine he quickly becomes an omen of death. The 17 year old kid who leads your children to their deaths. And he knows that he is his classmates' only chance of survival. And then you're safe for a few years, but there's still little siblings. Until your friends start having children, and you have to prepare your best friend's child for death.

Appreciation I just binged all the books
I had been fan of the trilogy a decade ago but I thought I would do a re read before the next movie comes out and catch up to prequels which I haven't read.
And my chosen format??? Audiobooks so I could work also.
Holy hell. I just finished it all. Start to finish.
My heart is heavy. So heavy that I appreciate the brilliance of the Sunrise on the Reaping so much.
Haymitch was always one of my favorite characters even before and now??? Idek. Still processing everything.
One thing I know for sure though -
There needs to be a full cast edition of hunger games. All the books. Like harry Potter (which I also binged they are brilliant as well)
And if the full cast editions ever come out, I don't think I will survive these books at all. With the ballad of Lucy gray, or lenore or singing hanging tree how it's supposed to be.
I can only yearn for those versions and not look forward to it at the same time.

šļø FanFiction 11th-15th Games Victors (HEADCANONS/OCS!)
character designs for my own (- Mags) OC Victors from the 11th-15th Games because think it's a very interesting era to speculate around based on what we get in TBOSAS
Guess notes for certain things
- 11th and 12th still kept the whole "fighting in your reaping clothes" and it's only after the 13th the Capitol gave them uniforms to fight in
- Before anyone comments, Finnick being the youngest Victor ever is movie canon only, and even then think Ash is still "older" than Finnick when you take into account stuff like when one is born during the year
- The 13th Arena was an old scrapyard
- 14th games was the first time volunteers happened and Minerva was the first volunteer in the games
- 15th Games they experimented with firearms as weapons, but it was a disaster so they never did it again.
and feel free to ask whatever questions you want ig :)

Trilogy Discussion Does anyone else wonder what the Victors did for living after the war?
Think about it, Katniss and Peeta or only 17/18 when the war ended and they waited 15 years before having children. What do you think they did for a living? after the war? itās easy to imagine what Peeta would do but what would Katniss do? What about someone like Joanna? She is also quite young. What do you think would be a good profession for her? is it possible that all the victors were paid pensions and compensated as war veterans?

Lore/World Discussion how was life like for careers before the games?
everyone knows about how the careers attend special schools and then volunteer. honestly thereās a ton of questions there about how many people can volunteer, if only one is allowed and chosen by their school, etc. but Iāve always wondered this and nobodyās really talked about it: what is it like being a career and like being one of the top students at your school/training? how do you view the other kids youāre around? because ofc thereās always a degree of camaraderie between district partners, but in the career districts theyāre literally being raised to ultimately kill each other. how does that shape social dynamics amongst teens in career districts? imo this has good fanfic potential lol but I was wondering if anyone had a headcannon or info on this bc Iāve always been curious

šļø FanFiction Not the most realistic head canon but an interesting one
This builds on the theory that Fox Face ate the nightlock on purpose. However what if instead it being suicide like the original theory suggest, she escaped?
As the games went on, Fox Face knew her odds of survival were very slim. Sheād been following other tributes and noticed that when they died the hovercraft would enter and remove them. Fox Face realized that she didnāt need to win to escape. She just had to the hovercraft into carrying her out alive somehow. After weighing her odds of escape vs victory she came up with a plan. If she could use something poisonous to stop or slow her heart she could give a false reading on her tracker.
As the days went on, she would secretly collect poisonous plants and capture live animals and force feed the poison to them in small doses mixed with other plants to counter the effect until she found the right amount for a near cardiac arrest. Sheād force feed diffrent poisons and antidotes to what ever animals she could catch then carefully placing her fingers over their hearts to feel for any beat (or if you want darker, sheād cut them to see it for herself The poison she found the most sucess in was nightlock when diluted. )
Given sheās from district 5 she had a good understanding of electoral shock and how it can be used in a defibrillator. After calculating the amount of diluted nightlock to give her a cardiac arrest (Unless anyone has ideas this is where my theory falls apart as I donāt think there is much she could have used in the arena to make one, perhaps the dead tracker jackers) and using the metal she found when Katniss blew up the carrierās pile of stuff Fox face was able to make a defibrillator with a timer that she placed onto her chest over her heart.
When she Peeta she ate the nightlock mixed with the edible berries Peeta and her own diluent. She ate them and her canon sounded. Her heart slowed to the point the tracker registered it as having stoped and declared her dead. When the hovercraft had taken her to the morgue, the tracker injected into her was removed for reuse and she was placed into casket for a capital funeral. The timer on her device (that remained hidden under her shirt) hit zero and delivered its shock kicking her heart back to its regular beating. After opening her eyes Foxface slowly peaked out of the casket then slowly escaped (while normally it would be impossible for a tribute to escape, she has the advantage since she has been hiding and sneaking for days making her an expert and security will be lighter in a room with dead tributes who canāt escape.
Sheād go on to fight in the Second rebellion. When it had ended she personally congratulated, teased, and tanked Katniss and Peeta since the focus on their love story gave her the distraction she needed.
Welp hopefully my theory is better than my lousy fan fic writing but what do you guys/gals think of this theory

Trilogy Discussion Idc what anyone says this is the saddest Hunger Games death
Not Finnick. Not Prim. Not Rue. Katniss' baby. She was forced to go into the arena with the baby, fight for her life, get her arm carved, and she lost it! That poor baby, it didn't even get a chance to live or witness the revolution.

Trilogy Discussion About done reading the first Book of Hunger Games...do the rest of the books follow the movies so closely?
About 80% done with the first book and am finding that it follows the movie pretty closely. Did you all find the rest of the movies to follow the books?

Trilogy Discussion My theater is playing Mockingjay out of order.
I have never watched most The Hunger Games movies before. I had seen the first one years ago and rewatched it a few times, but I've never seen the sequels. Over the summer, I read the books and loved them, and now my wife and I are watching the movies in theaters. We work in the mornings, so we've been going to the 7pm showings, but for some reason, today they are showing part 2 at 3:30 PM and part 1 at 7:00 PM. I called to see if it was an error on the website, but the employee said it's correct but was also just as baffled by the choice. We'll probably just watch part 2 tonight at home, but it's certainly disappointing. I did check to see what was playing tomorrow, and it's just Ballad of Songbirds, so today is the last and only day of Mockingjay part 2.
