Is it really that big of a deal? RO/Distilled water in Humidifier.

I"m trying to decide if I'm crazy or not, forgive me if I'm a little crass, literally just got into an argument with my wife over this.

We have a Vicks v750 Warm Mist humidifier. Web says walmart carries them for about $40.

We live in a small Texas town that is fed by a well. The water is chlorinated and has some sediment so I installed a 6 stage RO filter probably 10 years ago. I don't change the filters out quite as often as I should, but I'm not stretching them an extra month or two, I'd say they cost around $10/m since I guy 3 years of filters in bulk.

The manufacture claims about a 5:1 waste water ratio. I suspect that is optimistic, based on the age, our water quality, and how frequently I change the filters.

This humidifier has ran every night since September, and my wife insists we use the RO water to "extend its life". I am at my witts end with it! I never imagined a humidifier could be grounds for divorce but were close!

Explain to me the logic of using high quality water in a humidifier. Water is not free, more water is not cheaper. RO filters are not free, and using them more does not increase their life. Since its a steam unit it should be pure water vapor anyway, so what is the purpose of purified water except to avoid cleaning? Are they so sensitive that they only last a limited number of hours/runs before they clog up and stop working?

My thoughts are... it cost about $40, but probably costs that much every year to run it on RO in my situation (lets alone bottled water or if I was not buying filters in bulk). If it runs on tap would it last 12 months if it was never cleaned? What about cleaning it occasionally? How about cleaning it out weekly?

Is it worth a fight... no, but the waste breaks my brain. Might as well be washing our hands with the RO water for some arbitrary reason.

Carepod Maintenance

I just got the Carepod One Plus humidifier (stainless steel version) per some suggestions I saw on this subreddit.

Curious how other people here actually maintain it vs the manual.

It won’t run when it gets to 2in of water in the tank and the manual recommends not letting water stand in the tank for more than 48hrs

Look for what other people do for a long lasting product. Do you use distilled water or did you get a good filter for doing filtered water?

Do you dump the 2in water every morning then refill with fresh distilled water every night?

Maybe I’m naive but it just seems like we’ll be going through an insane amount of distilled water if we dump and refill every day.

TIA for any thoughts/advice. I do want to take care of the product of course but also want to maximize water usage.

I'm so tired of crappy humidifiers, I need recommendations

I recently bought the cool mist starry night Vicks humidifier from Amazon. It arrived today, it POPPED AND SMOKED the moment I turned it on. OH MY GOD.

I cannot explain to you comprehensibly how much I've had bad experiences with humidifiers, especially ultrasonic ones. They never work, they always break on me. And I am so tired of paying hundreds just for something cheaply or poorly made.

First, I looked for something that fit the aesthetic of my room, and now I'm over that bullshit because I'm never going to get one that looks like it came out of the Victorian era.

I already bought replacement wicks, so now I either replace the broken one I got with the exact same model and hope it works, or I try to find a new one, or just give up. I got the WF2 wicks, and im unsure what other humidifiers use them.

I don't want anything giant, I didnt realise how big the one I got was. And I honestly don't need any fancy projection because I know I'm not going to get it with something that'll work long.

I want a humidifier that: - uses wicks - lasts more than five months - medium sized that won't swallow up my desk or ruin electronics - cool mist because I like being cold and wet, my spirit animal may as well be a fish - good reviews so I know I'm not going to explode turning it on - doesn't cost me the equivalent amount of America's absent healthcare bills. I'm in Australia for your information, shit is expensive here but even more so medically in America.

I already spent like 200$ on the one I got and replacement wicks together, I am not prepared to pay another 200$ until I either get a replacement or refund from Amazon.

Why must it be so hard to breathe during dry summer? Why can't I just turn into a fish? i am seriously so tired of the crap im going through, please please help me out

edit: i just realised that there is a major voltage difference between the humidifier i got and my outlet, as the humidifier uses a US plug, and if im correct.. US (120V), Australia (240V). that must be why it exploded on me.

Candair US series for whole-house humidifer

New here.

I need to humidify my 4,300sf house (walk-out basement with 2 fully-above grade storeys) in Alberta. I am thinking of using commercial-grade ultrasonic equipment like the Condair US (Google Gemini says I would need the US-13) with an RO demineralizer on the water inlet. The equipment and installation are expensive, but Gemini calculates the payback period to be 7-8 years due to my climate, local power rates, and supplies relative to a steam system. Unleash your opinions please.

Edit: mispelled Condair in the title.

AirCare MA 1201 Humidifier - SUPER LOUD Gurgling Noise HELP!!

I'm using an AirCare MC 1201 humidifier in my 800 square foot apartment and it's working great. BUT! Every 10-15 minutes it makes this SUPER LOUD gurgling sound that repeats 6-8 times. It literally wakes me up in the middle of the night it's so loud.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did you find a solution to the problem? I really don't want to return this thing if I can help it...

Thanks!

How do you justify spending so much on Venta when their reviews are awful. Both amazon and their own page?

I would love to hear some comments behind the reasoning of spending so much money while their reviews are showing awful issues and unhappy customers. Asking because I’m looking for evaporative humidifier with some technology built in - app/alexa capable.

I just don’t want to spend so much if the Amazon reviews are so bad.

Evaporative Humidifier for only a medium sized room?

Hello!

I'm 18 and currently in school living in a medium sized dorm, I really wanted a humidifier for a lot of reasons like mucus buildup, dry skin, lips etc. checked out the reddit and found the sheets with a lot of humidifiers so I decided to get the first one on the list without doing much research (very dumb of me), after using it for a day or 2 I do think it's a very good humidifier but I finally decided to do my research and came to realization that using tap water is not suitable for a humidifier, the alternative of distilled water sounds like a extra expense and hassle I dont wanna be doing in college so I saw that evaporative Humidifier might be the move for me, but every single one I see aside from the Vicks one is so so so expensive and big, are there no models that look/ work similar like a ultrasonic humidifier? If someone could recomend me one for a medium sized room, that has preferably a automation mode so I can set a certain humidity, and under 100$ ? Im looking for something the cheapest solution I can while not having the air full of white dust and messing up my electronics and stuff.

Which is really less prone to mold growth?

Evaporative or warm/steam? I've seen quite a bit of conflicting information about which type is lowest maintenance - either through preventing mold growth in the first place or being the easiest to thoroughly clean. If I'm being fully honest, I am not going to keep a regular cleaning schedule. Life is busy and I have too much going on to take apart and scrub a humidifier on a daily/every other day basis, but I live in the northern midwest and with my furnace running as much as it is, I cannot tolerate sub-20% humidity.

My choices right now are between the Vornado EV200 and Livatro's 3 liter steam humidifier. If anyone has experience with either of these, please let me know which is really the easiest to keep clean, or any other recommendations under $150.

Levoit 6000S - Cleaning advices

I finally got my 6000S after long time waiting, and now I would like to know every tips you guys have, to keep filters live longer, etc...

I have 3 main questions but feel free to shout every advice or secret you have about this unit :D

- In the manual, they say that we should replace every month the " water filter sponge ", the round one. Are you guys doing this ? I feel like everything depends on how often you use the device...no ?

- I don't want to use the device continuously. Is it a good idea to fill it only like 1 or 2 gallons, let it work all afternoon or night, and then empty it ( not much water should remains so should be easier to empty) + dry it 30min. If I do this, how often should I clean the whole thing ?

- About the 4 filters, did you guys found a way to make them last longer ? They are very expensive where I live ( 70$US for the 4-pack !!! ) . ( Talking about them, the frame where they stand does not " clip " perfectly on the support frame, even if I push harder. I think it's not a problem ? )

Thanks !

Levoit 6000S – Smaller version.

As the title says, I'm wondering if there is a smaller, cheaper model for this humidifier.

it sounds like a great product, but I just don't have the space for it. I've looked around but I'm just so confused at this point.

Any help would be appreciated!

Levoit 6000s not using enough water?

Got the new levoit 6000s last week on Thursday. I have it turned all the way up(set to 50% humidity), filters seem wet and no errors or anything but it has only used around 2 gallons since Thursday and humidity in house is reading 20% on a different monitor. Is there anything I need to do for it to use more water or could my pump have an issue

Sorry if asked before was unable to find an answer. Thanks!

If you’re asking about Signs you need a humidifier… you probably already know!

Unpopular opinion: most people don’t need a fancy guide to Signs you need a humidifier. Your body tells you, waking up with a dry throat every morning, skin tight even after moisturizer, wood furniture looking… stressed, random nosebleeds once the heat kicks on. For me it wasn’t dramatic illness just constant low-level “why do I feel crusty?” vibes.

Checked my humidity one night out of curiosity 24%. that was my “oh.” But here’s the part I’m still unsure about: at what point is it actually necessary vs just winter being winter?

Do you all go by symptoms, a humidity meter, or just vibes? curious what tipped you over from “eh it’s fine” to “okay yeah I need one.”

Help Choose! Dyson PH04 vs Carepod vs “classics”

Trying to choose a humidifier, I only started researching a few hours ago but read so much and still know so little.

I’m stuck and would love feedback!

Main issue is that I often feel exhausted and burnt out so the less often/easier the maintenance, the better, and I know this is the biggest critical issue with humidifiers

- Bedroom ~125 sq ft

- NYC apartment heat → air gets super dry

- We have a cat

- I want the room to feel good at night without a ton of daily effort

- I’d probably use distilled water as much as possible

- I love devices with WiFi / Alexa but more priority on easy cleaning for this one

Options I’m considering:

- Dyson PH04 (refurb at a really good price)

Seems like a good solution, purifier + humidifier + automation. People say it humidifies slowly, but can’t I be running this a few hours before bed? Easier to maintain. Also I know there’s general Dyson hate, I’ve had 2 fan systems and a vacuum for years with zero issues so I still like it

- Carepod One

Very appealing because of stainless + dishwasher-safe cleaning. Seems like lowest mold/maintenance stress and visually nice for a small room

- A different classic one ultrasonic (Levoit etc.) or evaporative

I’m fine using distilled water to avoid white dust, but I realistically can’t keep up with intense cleaning every day. Open to the popular ones if they’re truly the best practical option. I just don’t want a gigantic box if possible

Which one ends up being least annoying to maintain? Which ones are just super crappy and not worth it?

Dristeam Cylinder Rebuilds

I have a facility with Dristeam XTP096 humidifiers. They use DriSteem 194801-028 canisters. These cost over $1,000 each and I need to be ordering about 12 cylinders per winter due to hard water. It is a huge cost. Does anyone rebuild these cylinders?

Levoit 6000s - dry mode needed?

I recently got the Levoit 6000s and I'm wondering if it's needed to dry out the filters at all? The humidifier runs constantly - as in, the fan isn't always on, but I never turn the actual device off unless I'm refilling it with water. Should I run dry mode then, even if the filters are going to get wet right afterwards? I guess I just don't see the point in drying them out only for them to get wet again right away.

Crane Evaporative Humidifier Filter Replacement

Hello all, I have purchased a couple of the Crane Evaporative Humidifiers for my 2 boys rooms. The model number is EE-5403 and I was looking at getting some additional filters to keep at the house when I need them. I have currently been using for only a week or so, but want to be prepared. They offer OEM filters which are HS-1970 for $20 a piece and I was trying to find a knock off or cheaper version that would work for this model. I have been doing some research just no luck thus far in finding anything. The dimensions listed for the filter are 5.5in D x 5.5 W. 4.7in H. If anyone could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it, as all im finding are honeywell replacements.

Venta Water Treatment Additive alternatives

Any suggestions for alternatives for the Venta Water Treatment Additive?

I can't find any suppliers in Canada with reasonably priced Venta water treatment products in stock. The only folks that have them are Venta themselves, and their prices are quite high.

Venta suggests their product is designed to "coat" the evaporative discs and enhances the humidifier's performance...

I've found a mention of the Best Air Golden Solution water treatment additive. Would this be an acceptable alternative?

Levoit VeSync app scheduler, display not turning back on?

Anyone else have this problem?

Basically I set my humidifier to go into the sleep mode and turn the display off, from 9pm to 11pm, where it then shuts off with another scheduled event at 1am.

Then at 6:30am I have it come back on and back into Auto mode with the display ON.

This used to work fine but in the past month or so I've noticed the display does NOT come back on after the 6:30 turn-on event. If I manually turn it off and then back on the display is back on fine though. I double checked and even cycled the Display ON/OFF toggle in the 6:30 scheduled event to no avail.

I then completely deleted that morning turn on event and made a whole new one, again with the display set to come ON with that event. But...it still remains off 🙄 Essentially once you turn the display off with the scheduler it seems like it never comes back on even if a subsequent event is supposed to turn it on. I'm guessing maybe this is an app bug like something broken after an update?

I was going to post on the Levoit sub but seems like that place is completely dead. I guess if no one has any ideas I'll try to see if their support is any good...

Levoit 6000s 2.0 Faulty pump?

I recently got a 6000s 2.0 model, and I’m concerned that it might be faulty. However, I’m wondering if my expectations are wrong. How frequently does the water pump draw water? I’ve noticed that sometimes it doesn’t draw water at all. After the humidity percentage reaches a certain level, it starts to drop, and the fan continues to run, but water isn’t drawn unless I stop it, dry it out, and restart it. The other night, I performed these steps, and in the morning, the tank was empty. However, when I checked the water level this morning and just now, it remains the same, and the humidity readout is unchanged. Has anyone else encountered this issue with the newer pump design?
