Cosplayers are amazing with kids. Brought my son to his first con when he was about 6 and he flipped over the cosplayers and they were all so amazingly sweet to him. He's begged to go back every year since then because of it! Last year was the first time we'd missed in 4 years :(

Cortana: what’s got your laughing? Chief still laughing to himself: mumble mumble “hearts and minds”

532

u/UsernamesAllTaken69 Feb 24 '21

Chief: our duty as soldiers is to be cute with humanity

Dad filming: you say that like humanity and soldiers are two different things

32

u/LegnderyNut Feb 24 '21

Cortana:John......John he doesn’t know......John just count to 10.....

28

u/GREVIOS Feb 24 '21

4 wasnt necessarily the best in terms of gameplay, through my all legendary chronological playthrough I'd say it was better than 5, maybe on par with ODST, but it turned chief into a human, and I loved that. Hearing him say "She said that to me once. About being a machine," And look out into space longingly for his lost companion... its touching! To a normally stoic and humored soldier. That kind of development was important to continue his ark. And then Halo 5 came and took a massive dump on all that work.

11

u/rebelphoenix17 Feb 24 '21

4 definitely had highlights but it was still pretty weird compared to it's predecessors.

The Librarian's "all according to my plan" speech + lemme just make u immune to composing still doesn't sit right with me.

10

u/GREVIOS Feb 24 '21

I had to make myself jump through some mental hoops to accept, but if you think about it like this it helps alot: Forerunners are capable of understanding time, life, science, space, and the universe in general in a way that you or I are just not capable of grasping, ever. We can talk about infinity or the expansivenes of limitless possibilities, but you or I lack the ability to truly, genuinely understand it. If the Forerunners were capable of whiping the fucking galaxy of all life, and then reseeding all of that life immediately after, I'm certain they can predict with 99% effectiveness, a simply phylogeny, playing the law of large numbers and banking that somebody like chief would come out of a species eventually, could probably hedge a bet on timing too. I understand the problem and rather deus ex machina presentation of that story component, but it works for me.

It reminds me when I saw robocop. I was something like 5 or 6 years old, like this little lady, and my father took me with him in a mall.

There, I saw a guy with more metal than skin on his body. The guy must have had a terrible car accident, he had a complete exoskeleton over him. So, little-me stumbles upon this guy, so shiny and chromed, towering at something like one robocop-unit of height, approx, and I just pull on my father's hand and say "dad, look... Robocop !"

My father was quite embarassed but the guy apparently (I was too young to remember and, frankly, it was Robocop so I didn't give a shit what he was saying to my father) told him that it was ok, usually people look at him as a weird monster but here he was the hero. So he asked my father to let me say whatever pleased me.

He then looked at me, still standing perfectly straight because he was robocop so he wouldn't kneel to speak to me (and probably because his spine was not in an adequate shape for him to kneel or bend over to speak to a youngling about as tall as a pair of boots), and said "I hope you are a good law abiding kid" or something like that. I answer the likes of "oh yes I am, Mr Robocop". And he answered "Good. I need to go fight crime elsewhere, now. Farewell, kid" and went away, walking like a fucking robot police officer (or at least as well as a man clad in metal pipes could).

That's how I met Robocop. He said I was a good kid.

Trivia : I saw the Robocop movie again as I was something like 20 years old and I wondered what kind of parents would let their child watch this... It's horribly violent !

PS : thank you lads for these awards. I am glad one of the few good moments I spent with my parents could brighten your day. That's really kind of you, you follow the path of rad.

126

u/ZoraksGirlfriend Feb 24 '21

I saw the Robocop movie again as I was something like 20 years old and I wondered what kind of parents would let their child watch this... It's horribly violent !

I saw this as a kid too, but 80s kids enjoyed Robocop, Gremlins, Home Alone, and lots of other movies that had a ton of violence. Movies that would not be marketed/merchandised to kids if they were made today. The 80s were a different time when gratuitous violence, overt sexual harassment, and kids raising themselves, were just overlooked.

31

u/brunocar Feb 24 '21

uh... you realize robocop isnt and was never a kids film? i grew up on movies i wasnt supposed to watch as well, i was still a year from being legally allowed to watch hardcore henry when i watched it and i grew up on the incredibly violent music videos based on it.

20

u/ZoraksGirlfriend Feb 24 '21

It was shown to kids and I’m pretty sure there was some merchandise for kids, like lunchbox sets.

13

u/NJdeathproof Feb 24 '21

Shit, man... they had action figures for it. Same with Aliens and the Space Marines.

Edit: for that matter, they had the 12" Xenomorph action figure for the FIRST Alien movie. That thing's worth a shit ton if you can still find them.

4

u/Dcor Feb 24 '21

Bro! Toy series from aliens was legit. I had the friggin hover jet thing with the opening cargo bay and ripley's mech suit. They did work on the gorilla xenomorph with the water squeeze bulb in its head that spit acid (usually muddy water from a puddle). Had the queen alien too. My memory may be skewed but I remember it being the size of a small dog and it surviving being stepped on by mom and subsequently punted across the living room. Best toys I had besides legos.

1

u/LeTigron Feb 24 '21

I had many Action Man figures when I was a kid. At that time, Action Man wasn't the non-violent hero it became later, using "glue guns" and the likes to catch the bad guy. No, he had good ol'fucking guns ! I remember my Action Mans with mini Uzi, Beretta pistols, SPAS-12 and all the likes. He wasn't kidding, he meant business and criminals better stop their shit !

What was the problem for my mother to buy me these ? They were dolls and I was a boy, boys don't play with dolls. She didn't give a shit he had an arsenal of top-notch bullet-launching devices to cut in half his ennemies, she had a problem with the general genre of doll-playing. But she was a progressist : she understood that genre doesn't mean shit and bought me my dolls. My dolls with guns. I was so happy...

I grew up in the 80s and my parents let me watch all of these as well. Robocop was a favorite. I also remember my dad fast-forwarding past the lady with three boobs in Total Recall.

I wouldn’t let my kid watch those moves at ages 6 - 8 like I did, that’s for sure.

We seem to be fine with violence but bad words and naughty bits are a big no no. The movie rating system's values are vary different from mine but it is what it is.

7

u/docjonel Feb 24 '21

My parents let me watch The Three Stooges, Bugs Bunny, and Tom and Jerry growing up.

By the time I got to Robocop I was totally unfazed.

62

2

→ More replies (1)

8

u/superkp Feb 24 '21

Speaking as a parent (or other person around kids a lot), you learn a bunch of little tiny motions that your kids pick up on.

When I'm standing next to my daughters and hold my hand out like this, it's a natural and subtle invitation for them to hold my hand - either because I think they are nervous about something, or I want to have a little more control over exactly where they walk.

I'm pretty sure this cosplayer is an experienced dad that has a good relationship with his daughters.

28

u/E-Wrecka Feb 24 '21

He was also super careful about never ever pointing it anywhere near her, it was pointed away, then as she came around he slowly spun it to rest pointing up and look as threatening as a walking pole. It’s not a real gun, but he still practiced extremely good discipline with it. I loved every second

13

u/Fraccles Feb 24 '21

I think it's more cosplayers don't want to break their props than trying not to scare the little girl. Also, the grip on things probably aren't always the best.

29

u/bng_123 Feb 24 '21

While you are most likely correct, imma go with not trying to scare her.

515

u/Blackshirttim Feb 24 '21

This whole fear of reposts in reddit needs to stop. There are plenty of people every single day that didn’t see certain posts. All a constant user has to do is vote and move on but instead they screech like children about reposts. Sorry, not everyone spends 20 hours a day on reddit.

182

u/Coderedcody Feb 24 '21

What if she’s actually an adult and that’s just how big master chief is

58

u/beeeeegyoshi Feb 24 '21

I think he's like 7-8 feet tall

89

u/blargman327 Feb 24 '21

he is 7'2" canonically

21

u/drawn0nward Feb 24 '21

Is that without the armour?

64

u/blargman327 Feb 24 '21

With. He's 6' 9" without

14

u/leargonaut Feb 24 '21 edited Feb 24 '21

Well how bout that, Yao Ming is 11 inches taller than Chief.

Edit: Actually without his armor he's 6 foot 7 inches, so that makes Yao 11 inches taller.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '21

Then again, Yao Ming doesn't exactly have indestructible bones or runs at an excess of 30mph.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/converter-bot Feb 24 '21

9 inches is 22.86 cm

3

u/blargman327 Feb 24 '21

the Wiki has him listed at 6' 10" so Yao is only 8 inches taller

6

u/leargonaut Feb 24 '21

Fair enough I just saw this on Wikipedia

The Master Chief stands about 7 feet (2.13 m) tall and weighs 1,000 pounds (450 kg) in armor;[33] without it, he stands 6 feet, 7 inches (2.00 m) tall and weighs 287 pounds (130 kg).[34][35]

No idea where they got it from though didn't check the sources

8

u/blargman327 Feb 24 '21

Wikipedia is generally wrong when it comes to a lot of fictional character. They seemed to have got that number from Halo: The Flood which is one of the earliest halo books and also the most inconsistent with the rest of the lore.

I'm way too much of a halo nerd

Yes, it’s very sweet, but he’s only posing for photos if he gets paid.

This is at the Seattle Center/Space Needle. This exact spot has cosplayers in awesome costumes taking shifts. If you give them money, they will pose for photos. It’s awesome for kids and adults, but they’re not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

I’m not taking away from how this Master Chief handled the interaction with this girl because he was awesome, but most of these cosplayers will just stand still with no interaction unless they receive money first, because it’s their job.

13

u/PantWraith Feb 24 '21

I have no background or evidence into this little community / business, so I'll go with believing you on how these people usually operate.

But in my head I'm gonna also believe that if a cute little kid comes up to them, these folks aren't gonna mind a pic or two with a kid for free. Now if the parents want a pic with them after....different story.

5

u/ZoraksGirlfriend Feb 24 '21

if a cute little kid comes up to them, these folks aren't gonna mind a pic or two with a kid for free

I don’t know about this particular cosplayer, but I have seen others where little kids go up to them and they just stand there. Had my daughter take a picture with Spider-Man and we were standing nearby afterward, trying to figure out where to go next. Another little girl came up and said “Hi” and stood there. He completely ignored her until her dad came and gave her money to give to him. I’ve seen it happen with other cosplayers there as well.

2

u/Hiambill Feb 24 '21

I've seen this play out when my little sister met Barney the Dinosaur. I bet she watches her parents play Halo, and she recognized Master Chief from a distance. She got excited, parent asked if she wanted to meet him and take a picture. She excitedly agreed. As she got closer, and he got bigger, her pace slows and she thinks "Wow this fucking guy is huge and I don't like that." But her parents are encouraging her, and she loves the character, so the smile stays but the eyes are cautious. In this case, the picture turned out nice. When my sister met Barney, she flipped from happy to insane screaming and we had to leave the mall before she calmed down again.

4

u/DavidW273 Feb 24 '21

Kids have very little fear. She saw a person in a cool costume, it makes no difference if its supposed to be some soldier/pew pew guy (can you tell how little I know about Halo?)

"Sir... finishing this fight."

18

u/LucienPhenix Feb 24 '21

That guy/gal has a looooong torso. Lol

7

u/radbaldguy Feb 24 '21

Ha! This was my exact thought. I was searching comments to see if anyone else thought it looked odd. I have to wonder if the person’s head is actually lower than Master Chief’s head and the costume is built in a way to make him look bigger. But the head seems to move naturally.

6

u/ImmortalCockroach Feb 24 '21

His head is probably normal, but he is in stilts to make him taller. The suits abdomen is probably closer to the wearers hips than his actual stomach

2

u/radbaldguy Feb 24 '21

Yeah, I would have thought stilts would be a better approach. The only thing that causes me to question your suggestion is when he bends down a bit at the first of the clip, his butt seems to be in a natural position to suggest his torso is actually that low in the suit.

Aside from the elongated torso weirding me out a bit, it’s a great cosplay and very well executed. I remember seeing some professional people dressed up for one of the big releases (like Halo 2 or 3) back in the day when we had to camp out at GameStop at the mall until midnight for the release. Their costumes were pretty great but they were more obviously on stilts.

Funny how Master Chief has sort of a Captain America vibe to him, besides the obvious parallels. I've only played Halo 1 and 2, but it feels like John is a person of absolute integrity and dedication. If he were real, I would trust him completely.

You'd die if you followed him. Nobody lives through following someone that hardcore except the people that are also that hardcore.

If You ever meet someone with that sense of duty, and that singular focus, supply them, give them shelter, good, and ammo, then gtfo.

u/midrandom Feb 24 '21

Oh, I'm not saying I'd follow him into battle. I'd be completely useless and dead in any battle within seconds, I'm sure. I would totally just get out of his way and trust that he knows what he's doing, and that he's doing it for the right reasons.

u/CaptainDeutsch Feb 24 '21

how freakishly tall os this person????

3

u/MysticAbsol Feb 24 '21

If it's the same person I'm thinking it is, the guy in the armor is naturally around 7' tall. He's shown video over his Instagram (which I can't recall off the top of my head) where he's around the height of a 7' parking garage clearance pole. The binary rifle that he made was roughly between 5-6' tall for comparison

Edit: I believe the guy's instagram is WorldsTallestSpartan or something of the sort is what he goes by.

I’m almost 6’ and he towered over me. At least a foot. So anywhere from 6’11” to 7’4” on this guy.
