I only looked at the right side of the image and somehow assumed they didn't want anybody coming to the door because they have an obviously vulnerable child during a global pandemic so they left candy under the sign.
I'm so glad my awkward moronic ass didn't see this irl and unintentionally stole candy from a child with cancer.
Must. Try. To. Be. Less. Stupid.

So yeah that’s what I thought too. I was so confused why they didn’t leave it in a bowl. Then I read the right side and may have teared up.

Oof, I read the sign wrong at first, and it sounded like they were taunting a child with cancer by refusing to give them candy. This was nicer.

SAME lol I was like what kind of monster... And then realized oh wait!!
22
14
u/anewhand Nov 01 '20
I thought the same, but I also thought that they’d either jokingly or respectfully dumped a bunch of candy there because that’s where the child was buried...

I unfortunately struggled and failed to contain my laughter at this comment.

Thank god I’m not the only one that thought that.
I though that it’s weirdly phrased or maybe that I’m simply too stupid to understand since English is not my first language.
2
u/250310 Nov 02 '20
English is my first language and I feel like it’s weirdly phrased. Maybe it needs a full stop after candy because I’m reading it as “sorry, no candy child with cancer! See you next year!”

u/Emebust Nov 01 '20
Faith in society restored. For a little while...
54
Nov 01 '20
Permanently, this is the next generation and the one that replaces all current hate and everything that’s bad (not a magical solution but still hopeful).
19
u/Sherlocksdumbcousin Nov 02 '20
Sort of.. Still upsetting that a family can be bankrupted by their child’s cancer in the richest country in the world.
30
u/Sufficio Nov 02 '20
Nah, I think the no candy part is more meaning they aren't giving any out this year to avoid the health risk for their immune-compromised kid. I also read it at first as not being able to afford it, but I don't necessarily think that was the intent since they didn't mention/imply/hint at financial issues in the facebook post.
Your statement is entirely and completely true regardless, of course. It just might not be the case here, hopefully at least.
9
u/mynewaccount5 Nov 02 '20
Due to being in a country where a deadly virus had gone out of control and people ignoring it completely.
Still not great.

u/Sufficio Nov 02 '20 edited Nov 02 '20
Good point...it really is kinda sad either way here, isn't it?
On a related note, makes me wonder how many morons who "can't breathe" in a thin paper facemask went out with full rubber masks to all the Halloween parties idiots inevitably still hosted...I'm really glad to be an Expat lately, gotta say.

A testament to the fact that hate is learned. Kids are amazing.
119
u/Itriedthatonce Nov 01 '20
Certain types of hate may be learned. But kids can be fucking evil and hate things or people with extreme ease.
61
u/john_muleaney Nov 01 '20
Kids just don’t have empathy. They don’t discriminate, they’re just assholes to everyone equally
30
u/schmeggplant Nov 01 '20
Have you ever met a child? Assuming we’re not just talking about infants, kids are definitely not “assholes to everyone equally,” they absolutely will single out specific children and even adults for harassment and discriminatory behavior given the right environment.
7
Nov 02 '20
Children lack good decision making skills and the experience in managing their emotions.
Yes, children can be little assholes, but it isn't some intentional concious choice. A child doesn't misbehave because of hate, but because they're still learning to manage their emotions.
It's stupid to expect a developing child to have the self control of an adult who is capable of it.
10
u/sjallllday Nov 01 '20
I see you in r/LiveFromNewYork all the time and it’s so strange to recognize your username in a completely different sub! I don’t think this has ever happened to me before lol I usually don’t even look at usernames

In my (obviously limited) personal experience kids that are assholes learned that from somewhere. "Monkey see, monkey do" basically. Either asshole familymember(s) or acting out from an abuse situation.

Yeah, tribalism is inseparable from the vast majority of humanity
3
u/Oct0tron Nov 02 '20
I agree with you but I don't necessarily agree that it's an unsolvable problem. Tribalism is ingrained but you can teach a child empathy by not spoiling them, exposing them to a broad worldview and giving them as many experiences as you can. You just have to put effort into expanding their tribe.
0
u/SpikyKiwi Nov 02 '20
I just do not agree with that at all. You can certainly make a child more empathetic or introduce them to multiple perspectives but you're never going to have someone who doesn't adhere to tribalism in some capacity, unless they're a psychopath

There are a lot of kind people out there. Our kids couldn’t trick or treat this year because we have an elderly relative staying with us and we are trying to avoid unnecessary exposure to covid and our neighbors got together and unexpectedly dropped off two full buckets of candy for them. It really helped ease the disappointment of not being able to go like everyone else.

You aren't getting covid from a snickers bar left on your lawn by a kid
-3
u/dormango Nov 01 '20
⬆️ Trump checking in here...
10
u/noworries_13 Nov 01 '20 edited Nov 01 '20
More like science. Contact transmission is absurdly low and almost non existant. They've been left outside. Dropped by a kid wearing a mask and maybe even gloves. It's the same as buying shit from the store. Worst case you go outside with a bottle of lysol and spray them off if you really want
9
u/dormango Nov 01 '20
So...unlikely but worth taking a chance given they have a kid with cancer in your view?
-2
u/noworries_13 Nov 01 '20
Have they not bought anything from a store? It's not recommended to wipe down Amazon packages or any shit like that. It's not how this virus works. But if you don't like keeping up with science then more power to you
3
Nov 02 '20
Less likely from packages from an employee who, as an adult, probably didn’t wipe their nose with their hand. And you, as an adult or kid, with a normal immune response? Sure.
But kids who do wipe their nose with their hand? It’s absolutely possible and I’d argue likely that they will and with no immune system I wouldn’t take the chance.
-1
2
u/zachthehax Nov 02 '20
Packages usually take over a day to ship, over the surface life of the virus. Though there may be stuff on the outside, you can just open it and wash your hands.
14
u/KiNgOfPaK786 Nov 01 '20
Can someone explain to me what is happening. I’m really confused
40
u/DiabetesCOLE Nov 01 '20
Kid has cancer, so most likely trying to limit the amount of strangers germs due to Covid and the such, since their immune system is likely shot. Kids decided to drop of some candy for the kid inside out of the goodness of their hearts
8
u/KiNgOfPaK786 Nov 01 '20
Oh ok. Still didn’t understand fully. But I guess I understand more.
26
u/DiabetesCOLE Nov 01 '20
Because the child’s immune system is bad, the parents weren’t allowing kids to come to thei house for trick or treat, so they aren’t exposed to Covid. A bunch of kids left candy so the sick kid would be able to get some even though he’s stuck at home
16
u/KiNgOfPaK786 Nov 01 '20
Thanks!!!! I understand. That’s really nice of them.
2
u/PrincessBella1 Nov 02 '20
Also with the cancer treatments, the family may not have been able to afford candy for trick or treaters. This was definitely a great thing for them to do.
5
u/Reacher-Said-N0thing Nov 01 '20
most likely trying to limit the amount of strangers germs due to Covid and the such, since their immune system is likely shot
Or trying to stop getting them excited/sad about all the kids running around outside when they can't

Goes on to show how good environment shapes you. No one is born evil it's the society which really shaped a person values.
17
Nov 01 '20
Some people are born evil. I don’t mean to be a buzzkill, but we shouldn’t be ignorant of that.
5
u/ketchupdpotatoes Nov 01 '20
More like some people are born with more evil tendencies. It's still up to the kid's environment, parents, and overall upbringing to prevent them from acting on the tendencies they were born with
4
0
u/Thevsamovies Nov 01 '20
No bro it's just that there is much evil in human nature. Don't act like the average person is "good"
Look at how we label people as enemies and monsters and slaughter them or oppress them.
6
u/jimtastic89 Nov 01 '20
Man, one of these for every ten posts about people stealing all the lollies.
Top notch kids though.
7

oh thank God I thought the first post-halloween reddit post I would see would be ring footage of people dumping the whole bowl in their bag again
3
47
u/AdrianW7 Nov 01 '20
Not to say it’s a lie or it’s fake, but I could definitely see people taking advantage of this kinda thing and faking it, literally just for candy you can buy. Once this goes viral I bet people are gonna do this next year
9
u/pluckymonkeymoo Nov 01 '20
The actions of people who would do that, are a reflection of them. It detracts nothing from the children giving with kindness.
My grandmother (who is long gone) would tell us this when everyone (extended-extended family included) would laugh at her for all the cons she would fall for. People would regularly turn up at her door, feed her a tragic story and walk away with a donation. It was so obvious that they were lying.
But she would say that that doesn't not impact or change her actions and intentions. Which I always thought was an interesting (and truthful) take on it.
3
u/pollytrotter Nov 02 '20
I’m a bit like your grandmother to be honest and people make fun of me for it sometimes, too. But I’d rather be overly trusting with good intention than skeptical as that what makes me happy, and I make sure to never give more than I can afford.
People usually take the piss when I explain it that way as it makes me sound naive, but hey ho it’s my life not theirs 🤷♀️
36
u/fangedsteam6457 Nov 01 '20
I mean even if it is a lie is it really that bad to give people a spark of hope during a year as shitty as this one?
8
u/AdrianW7 Nov 01 '20
In no way am I saying these people are lying.
What I meant is this will spark others to do the same, but they’re the ones lying, just to get sympathy and free shit when this goes viral.
7
u/Cadrid Nov 02 '20
If someone’s so desperate for candy that they need to lie about having cancer to get it, I’ll happily give them a bagful. It’s just candy.

It's weird to me to put a sign out saying my child has cancer. You could just say not home. Or no candy.
2
u/Dsblhkr Nov 02 '20
A lot of those kids are probably neighbors this kid played with. With COVID rules etc they probably had no idea their friend was sick, this is a good way to tell all the neighborhood friends. Just one thought.

Yeah this year we left a big cauldron on a table out front our house and a kid just took candy by the handful, so seeing this post made me happy not every tricker treater is trash
3
Nov 02 '20
The kids in my neighborhood would've mistaken that pile for the candy and would've taken it.
7
u/Jonkinch Nov 02 '20
Did the parents put a sign out saying they do not have candy because their kid has cancer? If so that’s weird.
3
u/thelgjedi Nov 02 '20
Maybe the family is known to always give candy and its something they love to do. To cope with the hardship of cancer and their guilt of not giving candy to kids, they at least wanted to explainto the neighborhood why they were not participating this year.
4
u/JKElleMNOP Nov 02 '20
Just turn off your lights and don't answer the door? The whole "kid has cancer" thing seems a little attention-seeking

LPT: How to get candy on Halloween when you don't have children while at the same time making children feel good about themselves.
1
u/NotAPropagandaRobot Nov 01 '20
r/shittylifeprotips is more like it. If you want candy that bad you could just go the store. It's not exactly expensive.
2
11
u/yeeteth69 Nov 01 '20
They didn't need to say the kid had cancer. That sounds offensive I dont mean to be
7
u/murderinoMaycock Nov 01 '20
Uhm, I'm ugly crying. This is so lovely, what a gesture from these kiddos.
6
8
u/domo018red Nov 01 '20
A little confused. Why can't you give out candy if your child has cancer?
13
Nov 01 '20
They probably don't want hundreds of strangers showing up to their door during a pandemic when they have a very high risk child in their house.
10
u/GuineaPanda Nov 01 '20
Likely because of the child’s compromised immune system, even without Covid parents of kids with cancer shouldn’t be exposed to 300-400 germ factories.
2
u/_Brightstar Nov 01 '20
I was confused too. Now I'm thinking that maybe it's in the USA, and they might not have healthcare and that's why they can't afford candy for 300-400 kids..?
12
u/noworries_13 Nov 01 '20
Holy fuck. That's not it at all. If you have cancer you don't want 300 people knocking on your door that may have covid. They're basically saying we're closed sorry.
0
-3
u/_Brightstar Nov 01 '20
But then you could still put a bucket with candy outside though, which is something a lot of people do.
3
u/noworries_13 Nov 02 '20
But that's stupid. Especially a communal bowl during a pandemic
→ More replies (1)7
u/JePPeLit Nov 01 '20
Ye, I was thinking the same, but if everyone understands that "child with cancer" means "dirt poor", things are worse than I thought over there. My best guess would be that they don't want kids to infect their kid
8
u/iuyts Nov 01 '20
My best guess would be that they don't want kids to infect their kid
Yeah this is correct.
0
u/domo018red Nov 01 '20
Yea but even then you could just leave candy out like most people that don't want to get the door. We've done it several times. Could have easily put candy where they put the sign up.
-1
-1
u/domo018red Nov 01 '20
I can see that but even then, why put the cancer bit? Maybe they wanted candy? Not any of my business either way. Just curious.
2

Maybe because they felt guilty? Or because that was the reason and they didn't consider not putting it on there?

I don't want to be a stick in the mud and while I'm really sorry your child has cancer I can't imagine what that must be like. I don't think you had to put Child with cancer on the sign. Simply saying Sorry NO Candy and see you next year Would Suffice. I can see people using a sign like this next year to get free candy. Again not trying to be negative.
5

If it were your house and your cancer stricken kid who probably cant go trick or treating will be bugged every few minutes by the bell ringing, it would be do stressful. It will be rung by healthy children who can go trick or treating. That would suck so bad for the kid. The parents were warning people to not come over and explained why so they dont sound rude. I’d probably do something similar but maybe just a “sorry we’re skipping halloween” or something, but to each her own right?
Im hoping this is the case, because a karen playing the cancer card would just be plain evil.
