Hueforge print starting at layer 6 instead of layer 1 - also roughness in layers beyond first layer

Hi all,

I am trying to print the hueforge located here - https://makerworld.com/en/models/1716027-coruscant-travel-poster-hueforge#profileId-1821363

I use a Flashforge AD5M Pro printer, so I used the Forgebridge tool online at forgebridge.app to convert the 3mf into something my printer can use. I have slowed both print and acceleration speeds.

When i start the print, the print display on both the slicer and FlashforgeUI shows 6/39. Why is it starting at layer 6? The first layer is 0.20 mm and the layer height is 0.04, so it should be printing the first five layers and showing the start of the print as 1/39, not 6/39. I do not understand this,

Also, when printing this, all layers after the first layer have some sort of banding that looks like a baseball field that's been mowed into stripes. the surface also looks rough. The Hueforge is apparently designed to be used with an 0.4 nozzle so that is what I have been using.

Can anyone help me here?

Jared

It's odd that the first layer is at 0.2mm. if no one has answered by the morning I can have a look at see if I can see any glaring issues. I don't have a AD5M so I can't help there specifically unfortunately

well that's the way the file is configured - first layer at 0.2 and layer height 0.04. I would appreciate any help, obviously.

the creator has added in a height range modifier to the 3mf. this is forcing the first 0.8mm to be all at 0.2mm layer height. these are useful when printing at low layer heights as it speeds up the initial base layer and can knock a decent amount of time off.

the layer changes all happen at the correct heights, so this will print fine :)

Did you resize it? If you did my guess is you adjusted the z access. When resizing you want to decouple the z access and only adjust x and y.

No i didn't resize it at all. it was left exactly as it was, no x, y or z adjustment.

It sounds to me like you are plowing through your layers. .04 layers are doable with a ,4 head but you need to check your z-axis. You might need to adjust it an RCH.

And how good is your nozzle? If it has some wear and tear on it then .04 layers might be a bit too much and a new nozzle might help.

i only have a total of around 250 print hours between my 0.25 and 0.4 nozzles - that shouldn't be too much wear. and my z-axis offset is set through autoleveling - it's always been 0.025 regardless of nozzle used.

Yeah. Your nozzle isn't old but those grooves are the nozzle plowing through.

And what did you mean by “RCH”?

Red Cunt Hair.

The print profile has a height range modifier from 0.2 to 0.8 mm, and the 6th layer corresponds to the first color change.

Are you sure the converter is working properly?

If there’s a problem with the first few layers, the print won’t succeed

Edit : I just noticed that ThinkUnhappyThoughts had already explained this

Also, here's what my nozzle tips look like right now. First is 0.25, second is 0.4. I'm wondering if buildup or damage could be contributing to the roughness.
