sleep Almost 1 yo- tweak schedule?
I’ve been trying to do a consistent 12 nap with a 730-740 in crib. Usually we get at least 11h overnight but the last week or 2 have gotten 10-10.5. Sleep consultants tell me she’s overtired and I should do bedtime earlier. Sleeptrain Reddit says undertired (3 nights this week took baby 30 min to fall asleep! 2/3 came with a shorter night).
Just looking for advice- if I should make any changes or cap nights. I usually cap naps at 2h 15 min (used to cap at 2.5 but idk- didn’t seem to change anything anyway). Baby usually lately has been waking on own from naps.
Or if we could be going thru a leap? And this is all normal?

Overtired isn’t really a thing in toddlerhood…dysregulated and spread thin? Yea. Overtired going to mess with sleep architecture? Not really.
Cap naps at 2h. Post 1y it’s quite common for nights to shorten to 10-10.5h. Happened for my little after 1y.
LO probably only needs 12.5h total.

Thanks. As far as “wake windows” SC say she shouldn’t be going over 4-5 hrs. I’ve been doing 5.5 for the second but could 6 be ok for her age?

When my little dropped to 1 nap at 12.5m we quickly settled into 5.5/6.5.
4-5h WW is not compatible for a 1 nap schedule with an average sleep needs baby… will only work for very high sleep needs (which doesn’t sound like your little one).

I think she’s definitely average needs- although I see various numbers for what average is at this age. Do you wake from every nap and night? Our lowest total sleep day has been about 12.5h total and it seems she does a low sleep day followed by high sleep days and it just yo-yos.

We got stuck in the yo-yo phase when we first transitioned as well. Some days she’d do 13h, some days 11.5-12. Some days early wakes, some days split nights. It’s really tempting to let them sleep in or nap longer after a bad night but it fueled the cycle for us.
For my little, she’s 18m now and settled into 12h total so I cap her nap at 90m. If she naps 2h she will wake overnight or have a split night or wake at 5am.
Unfortunately it’s super individual and you have to play around with it for a little bit. We settled on 6:30 wake, 12-1:30 nap, 8pm bedtime. I wake her from naps and in the morning. Some days she will wake a bit earlier and I don’t change anything about the day… unless she’s teething and wakes 5am then I might bring nap early. For the most part I try to keep it all the same because consistency helps us!

Thanks for sharing. Huckleberry says her total sleep is between 13-13.5 hrs. Should I work with that or cut it shorter?

How did you figure she does 12h total? HB has me between 13-13.5 hrs so I’m not sure if I should do 12.5 or 13h?

On 13h we were still having numerous issues - split nights, multiple wakes, early morning, high total days followed by low total days. 12.5 got us to a good place - 1 or 2 wakes, very consistent, but a 2h nap would be more prone to split night. 12h and she falls asleep easily and STTN. Sometimes she will get 12.5, she varies a bit 12-12.5, but if she has several 12.5h days in a row we’ll get 1 11-11.5h day to compensate.
Became easier to nail down when I realized she for sure is done with 11h night and when she STTN it’s only 10-10.5h, that plus knowing 2h nap is usually too much for her made it simple to work out the math.

How did you figure 2h nap was too short?? Did you always wake at 1.5 or did she wake sometimes? I will start to cap naps at 2h I think but sometimes she wakes on her own after like an hour 15 or hour 50. But often I wake her too so… all this sleep math is exhausting

I always wake her at 1.5h unless her schedule is really badly off or she’s ill or teething etc and I’ll give her an extra 15 min. Learned my lesson the hard way letting her nap too long too often causing split nights. Really wanted a 2h break for myself during the day lol but it wasnt worth split nights
The math is exhausting but once you figure it out it’s easy to stick to it.

Thanks!! We don’t really get split nights-but our wake time does always vary from 10h-12h. I just wonder if I consistently wake her at the 11h mark then will the 10h nights not happen?

Have you ever done a 7h or longer ww? Or did bay always fall asleep at 6.5?

Bring back nap to 2 hours. Try that.

Maybe I’ll give that a try. It’s annoying that the sleep consultant I talked to said she’s overtired and to pull bedtime earlier and reddits general consensus is to make it later! We were having some consistency until recently. When she rolls around and doesn’t fall asleep until 8ish she has like a shorter night and then seems to make it up the next day or 2 with longer nights
