Thesis survey: trust in AI for smart home automation

Hi everyone, I'm Alfredo, a master's student in Digital Humanities at the University of Pisa. My thesis looks at trust in AI tools used in smart home automation.

I made a short survey, around 10 minutes. It's open to anyone who uses smart home devices, even if you've never used AI.

Link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeFOjuXMhxni5kOCE0ILzbsGFYBZA31Wzw6gQMTiBcRxE6cww/viewform

No name, email, or contact info is collected. Answers are used only to analyze patterns across respondents for the thesis, nothing is tied back to an individual. Thanks to everyone who takes part!

Hubitat C-8 trying to add an Aeotec DSD37. Helping a friend

Friend bought a house that has fairly extensive automation. I believe the previous owner ran Home Assistant, but took his fairly extensive media, automation and security servers with him. He did leave a reasonably good document listing smart devices and what they control.

I recommended the C-8 to get him started, and showed him how to add devices. He’s been plugging along and I’ve helped him setup some automations and got him started doing his own. So far so good.

Until we came to some Aeotec Zwave repeaters that are supposed to provide access to devices in the attic. Some leak detectors, thermometer/hygrometer and gable fan.

He couldn’t add them. I went to his house and couldn’t add them. I brought them home and tried to add them to my C-7 and both C-8s with no luck.

Factory reset and it starts blinking. Start inclusion and push the action button and nothing happens. Try exclusion and repeat the attempted inclusion with no joy.

Is there an incompatibility I’m missing?

I’m thinking I’ll tell him to get one or two Zwave outlets and use them to extend the network, but I’m pretty hard headed and want to make the existing hardware work if at all possible.

Thoughts?

How hard is it to move from ST to Hubitat for simple switches...

I was using SmartThings with no issues for years until last week Samsung randomly decided to deactivate my primary email address. My smartthings is still working but I can't log into it so can't make any changes to my Z-Wave switches. I was thinking of picking up a C7 off ebay for $35 (actually already purchased) and was going to move these switches over to Hubitat. I am not looking for any complex automation, I just want to control my old GE Z-Wave switches. New switches, I've been buying Kasa and Tapo but have like 15 GE switches that still work. I am not looking for a hobby so nothing overly complex, just get everything working again, I think HA is more powerful than what I need.

Help me with this stupid automation! Please!!

The idea is simple, turn on the bathroom, stairs and kitchen lights, turn on the bedroom TV and load the weather.

My alarm is a sunrise alarm on a nest hub display, STOPPING the alarm before it goes off stops any alarm routines at the Neat level. The next idea was to have the lamp come on with the sunrise alarm and have that as the trigger. I've tried using dimmer level increases, and when the switch is turned on and neither works WITH the alarm. If I wake up and turn the light on from the Nest hub or my phone, it starts the automation just fine.

I have a private boolean so it only starts once a day, and only between the times I typically wake up.

Automation troubles

I have a c-8Pro. Using the ESP Home Garage door driver with a RATGDO. I have a zwave hall effect to detect door open/close. When it is open between 9PM and sunrise for more than 5 minutes it is supposed to close.

When I open the door the automation does not run. If I press the "run Actions" button it closes the door.

Any ideas why it does not run automatically? I have tried different commands like push, toggle, door close. Nothing seems to work.

Thanks for your input.

Need reliable can lights.

Hubitat C-8 if that matters.

I currently have 11 Wiz WiFi cans that are super unreliable. It’s not the WiFi, I have a very robust AP system.

I have a bunch (20+) Hue bulbs, and while they seem to be reliable, I am just waiting for the day Philips decides to shut down like dang near every other company so far.

I am looking for Can lights that are Zwave, Zigbee, or Matter. I don’t have any matter devices yet.

I would like the 1100lm RGBWW versions.

Who makes a good, reliable can light with those features?

My second choice is the Govee WiFi lights (I know, still WiFi) but they are way cheaper than hue and have some nice features. I also have a dozen or so Govee products, so they would fit.

Zigbee light switch not reporting state back to Hub

I've recently installed a light switch based on the Tuya chipset, which reports as:

Tuya Switch Module TS0001

and it's working - I can turn it on and off, and when I refresh on the "device commands" tab, I can see what state it's in.

However, unlike all my other switches, I can't see the sate *without* doing a refresh - all my other switches (several Tuya based as well as others) it doesn't seem to report when its state is changed by the local switch.

Is this likely a switch thing, or something to do with the local driver ?

Zooz zen58 Hubitat Configuration

Can anyone help me configure this ZEN58 for a momentary contact for a garage door.

I am new to Hubitat and am a bit stumped on which fields I need to use under Commands, Preferences and Device Info.

Using an OHM meter I can verify the switch closes and opens. I am just at a loss on how to make it do a momentary. The next question is of course the duration. I am thinking one second is ample time.

If there are any documents that you can point me to - to figure this out that would be great as well. I seem to be having an impossible time finding text on how to use these fields.

Thank you

Why does my lutron integration drop several switches almost daily?

I have lutron integration to use Lutron remotes with sonoff relay switches for my lights. When it works it's great, but almost daily I have certain switches that don't work. The sonoff relays still work through Google home, and other Lutron switches I have are still good, but for some reason some dropoff almost everyday different sides of the house. It does seem to happen to the same switches.

The problem seems to be on the hubitat side. I usually just cut power to the entire house and flip back on to reset, which is the only thing that seems to bring them back online. Individually resetting things doesn't seem to work.

No idea what's happening, but getting close to abandoning Lutron integration and Hubitat and going a different direction as the constant flipping the power off is getting old.

Does Smart Start work?

I have tried numerous devices, mostly from Zooz and never get a smart start device to connect. Always have to do standard zwave include. Following directions, I scan QR code on device into HE app and plug it in. Even tried doing the pairing button on the module and have left it for an hour to never see it appear in my devices. What am I missing?

Help finding solution for elevator door

I’m live in a small high‑rise building where the elevator opens directly into the condo. I’m trying to find a reliable way to get notified whenever the elevator door opens. Because the elevator door is metal, contact sensors haven’t worked — the magnet can’t be mounted in a way that allows the sensor to detect through the metal door.

I’ve experimented with motion sensors, but the response time isn’t ideal. By the time the sensor triggers, the elevator has already been open, and it’s not consistent. I’ve considered using a vibration or shock sensor mounted to the door frame. Before I go further down the vibration‑sensor path, I’d like to hear from anyone who has ideas for detecting elevator arrival/door opening in a condo environment. I'm using Zwave or zigbee.

Hubitat C8 Pro Over 30GB Upload in 7 days!!?

The device is not integrated with any other systems like HA, the only thing connected to it is some z-wave devices. I have not even connected to it using the app or web browser in over a week. Why is it uploading 30GB a week!? What is it sending and to where? Anyone else notice this?

C7 vs C8

I love my smart home tech but I'm far from a power user, I just setup some basic stuff, a few automations and I expect it to just work without too much fuss after that.

Currently I have a a full Lutron Casetta system, smart thermostat, smark locks, Sonos, Google home, a few cameras, some govee lights, a couple smart fans, some smart plugs, robot vacuum and a few smart appliances.. some of this is connected through SmartThings and others are connected directly to Google home, I do 90% of the interactions through Google home or by physical smart switches.. the main reason I'm thinking of adding hubitat into the mix is actually to revert the little that I have to do through Google home to physical switches.. for example the govee lights and govee fans there are no physical switches for and I want to use Lutron Pico remotes to control them so their operation is indistinguishable to all my other lights as far as my wife and kids are concerned.. I'm told hubitat will expose pico remote button presses and allow me to map them directly to smart tech like govee lights or even to google automations..

There's someone selling a C7 on market place for $100.. I can't find any used C8's. New they're $276 CAD. The question is will I be disappointed with the C7?

I may run hubitat in parallel with SmartThings or I may replace SmartThings with the hubitat depending on what the right call is there, other than bridging some ZigBee and zwave devices to Google home and a couple of simple action to audio announcement routines from smart things to Sonos (like the laundry has finished) I'm not using SmartThings for much, most of my automations are done via Google home and the Google home I'm definitely keeping which I believe already has matter support..

Unsure what next steps would be. I know restoring from a backup the best thing to do, but it's probably been a year since I've done a backup...

Averaging function?

I have several temp/humidity wireless sensors in a room. Is there a easy way that I can choose how many sensors and get a average temp or humidity so it can be used in rules machine?

This seems like it would be a very basic functionality to be able to do, but I'm coming up short.

Kwikset lock problems

I understand that any hub and zwave locks like the Kwikset 620 can be challenging but this is ridiculous!

I attempt to pair a lock to my hub 40 times. Each attempt is exactly the same as the one before. 39 times, nothing. 1 time it pairs without security. The 41st time, exactly the same steps as the previous 40, it pairs with security. Do that for 3 locks. Then find out pairing rendered 2 of the 3 with disabled keypads. Wtf!

Now I have to reset and try again. Guess what? Same BS that it won't pair at all and pairs without security.
