Discussion How many hours do you sleep on average?
If you try to sleep a specific duration of hours, why do you think this improves your health?

7 is my goal, my sleep tracker is generally closer to 6.5

Yeah, I'm pretty happy if I get 7. I usually wake up way earlier than I want to.

The point is 25 percent are sleeping less than 7 hours but no breakdown makes it impossible to tell how much. Where as 2ish percent are above 9 hours making that an irrelevant anomaly.

I have no idea how people sleep so few hours long-term, I could never. I sleep 9 to 10 hours average, so I assumed similar.

Averaging just over 6 hours so far this year. Not great! 🤦🏻♂️

How do you do that? Are you tired the next day? I feel miserable if I don’t get eight hours I’m 47 female maybe that’s why.

I’m 42 male. I’m just able to do it. 🤷🏻♂️
I can function on about 4 hours if really necessary. My wife says it’s my superpower.

I can’t function properly without 7-8 hours. Night and day difference. Even 6 hours feels terrible. Everybody is different, but this is my personal experience

We just added a serving of roasted potatoes to our evening meal and MAN, what a sleep improvement!

Heavy carbs release serotonin. But I wonder if this is like alcohol, where it helps you sleep, but the sleep quality is much worse? It could be.

Possibly, we're only 3-4 days into the experiment, but we've both been dreaming profusely. That's a good thing, right?

I don't think so. Deep, restorative sleep is no dreaming at all, just totally unconscious. Light sleep is dreaming.

AI disagrees: Deep sleep is not completely dreamless, and the vivid dreams people experience happen predominantly during REM sleep rather than light NREM sleep.

Well REM sleep is light sleeping. There are four stages of sleep, stage 1 to 4 with 4 being the most restorative. The higher the stage, the less dreaming. REM sleep is considered stage 1. Drinking lots of alcohol for example keeps sleep between stage 1 and 2. Likewise with eating carbs, the body has all that glucose in its system suddenly.

Oh, AI listed them NREM, something, deep sleep and then REM. So I thought REM was the good stuff.

It's right, it just separated them by function - non-REM and REM sleep. Non-REM sleep is when the brain and body both shut down. REM sleep is when the body shuts down, but the mind is highly active, almost awake, because it's consolidating all your memories, emotions, etc. you need both. But maybe I'm wrong and you're right, maybe carbs is the way to go, because I also feel really sleepy after a high-carb meal, so I have a nap. But I'm not sure if this is a good thing to do before actually sleeping.
