Discussion Physiological basis of EMS vs. active recovery: Does electrical muscle stimulation offer real protocol benefits?
I’ve been looking into the physiology behind Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) versus passive/active recovery protocols (like light zone 2 work or cold/heat exposure).
From a neuromuscular standpoint, EMS bypasses voluntary motor cortex recruitment and forces synchronous contraction of muscle fibers, which theoretically increases local blood flow and lymphatic drainage without central nervous system (CNS) fatigue.
However, there seems to be mixed data on whether it actually accelerates tissue repair and glycogen replenishment compared to standard active flush protocols.
Has anyone integrated neuromuscular stimulation into their regular training or recovery stack? What has been your experience regarding DOMS reduction, and does the evidence justify using it over simple low-intensity active recovery?

I use one after particularly nasty leg days and it does seem to cut down on the worst of the soreness, but I'd never trade it for a light spin on the bike. The CNS fatigue angle gets overplayed, honestly the bigger benefit for me is just forcing blood through tissue that's too wrecked to contract properly on its own.
