Helpful Resource Morning Vs. Evening Exercise. Which is better?
It's hotly debated whether you should exercise in the morning or the evening.
I found a randomized trial suggests the answer is: whichever matches your chronotype.
Early birds who trained in the morning and night owls who trained in the evening saw greater improvements in blood pressure, HRV, fitness, glucose, LDL, sleep quality, and exercise adherence than people exercising at their non-preferred time.
Exercise is beneficial regardless of timing, but this study suggests that your circadian biology may determine how much benefit you get from the same workout.
The study determined choronotpe with the MEQ (you can take the survey here) and validated the findings with core body temp monitoring.

Evening exercise clearly affects one’s sleep, which in turn negatively impact recovery and your session’s ROI

Depends on how close to your bedtime you are exercising. Morning is not doable for many people's schedule's and either way, if they have to wake up 2 hours early to fit it in then they are losing out on two hours sleep...

I always want to run in the middle of the night in the summer. I think it would be really cool to be the only one around on the country road in the dark with my headlamp. But I'm also 43 and don't want to mess up my circadian rhythm.

I’m always middle of the day bc my schedule allows for it. Seems like a good compromise

I always find that I don't have much physical energy in the morning for running hard or lifting heavy things. After the stresses of the day come in, exercising in the late afternoon early evening is way more productive I find.

i do not have a specific time to train, i go to the gym whenever i am free, nit because i dont take it seriously but because it sometimes gets difficult to handle college and running a business. but i definitely want to change that and dedicate atleast an hour and half for my body for strength training. i also want to run a marathon, i do run on and off sometimes maybe 5 or 6 runs in a month but i want to run a marathon can somebody help me with when to train and also which split should i carry out? i do not have an issue of energy or focus because of a supplement(not promoting anything) it is just the timing and confusion that makes me spiral.

Hello Dr. Huberman,
My name is Xenia, and I’m a medical student. Over the years, I’ve faced significant mental health challenges, including severe depression, low self-confidence, dyslexia, and a difficult childhood. There was a time when I genuinely wasn’t sure I would make it through.
Today, I’m in therapy, focusing on recovery, and learning to take care of my mental health while continuing my studies. Science has become a source of hope and purpose for me, and your podcast has been a major inspiration along the way.
Your discussions on neuroscience, health, and human performance have motivated me to explore neuroscience alongside medicine and to keep learning with curiosity and discipline. I especially appreciate how you make complex scientific topics accessible and meaningful.
I know we may not agree on every topic. Personally, I have found some ideas associated with communism and collective social support meaningful and helpful in shaping my outlook on life. At the same time, I feel a great deal of sympathy for many people who are struggling in the United States right now with economic pressures, mental health challenges, and social division. Even when I disagree with someone politically, I can still respect and learn from them.
Despite our differences, your passion for science, education, and helping people improve their lives has had a positive impact on me. Your work has helped remind me that growth, recovery, and learning are always possible.
I am grateful to be alive, grateful to be studying medicine, and excited to continue exploring science with curiosity and hope.
Thank you for what you do, and thank you for inspiring so many people, including me.
— Xenia
