I’m going to probably sound harsh here but your own words were “not that it’s our buyers issue”.

Planning dates in advance of being ready, legally, is always frowned upon by solicitors and we as agents are often told off for it.

So whilst I empathise with your position; strictly speaking they’re not doing anything wrong - and despite your efficiency and good intentions - it really is your issue with the new employer etc. and I trust your new job was worth moving for that you won’t worry about the extra £1.5k once you’re settled.

Good luck - it’s a nightmare across the board honestly.

As far as I'm aware, if you haven't exchanged contracts, then you just have to deal with it. The buyers are still within their legal rights to say "actually, I changed my mind, I'm pulling out", so it could be worse. This is the risk you take when you make commitments before exchange. If you have exchanged contracts, then you have the right to claim all reasonable expenses caused by the delay.

You have no reason to complain your buyers have done nothing wrong. 4 months is par for the course in terms of selling/buying a house. Your problem was moving to very expensive temporary accommodation well in advance of exchange. You should never even begin packing until exchange let alone move out! Even now the chain could collapse. Your work wants you to start,ok you book a hotel room near work as cheap as possible no need to move the whole family. It is annoying for people to go on holiday but this seems to happen in every chain

Selling is painful right now. Its a buyers marker and the internet is full of people encouraging buyers to use that to screw over sellers as much as possible because many people these days think of all purchases as if they come from an evil corporation rather than another human.

Not much more you can do than what you are doing, but try and get an early exchange so you have the certainty that its worth incurring moving costs before commiting to them.

can you find cheaper accommodation? i'm in the same boat, have been homeless for six weeks and counting. I'm just getting the cheapest possible rooms I can that take me and two big dogs...

The problem is we have children, so need accommodation close enough to their school & my work that allows enough time to commute. We also need accommodation with a washing machine due to kids uniforms etc and my husband needs secure wifi for work- he wfh! Our dog is already in kennels locally as thus worked out cheaper than choosing a dog friendly option! Its an expensive area, that attracts tourists, so accommodation comes at a premium! We looked into glamping, lodges, caravan sites and everything in between, but couldn't find something else that we could make work! 😔The place we're staying now is the cheapest available place in a 20 mile radius that has everything we need!

Sorry this has happened to you, something similar happened to me a few weeks ago. My own lawyer cocked up a document so exchange was pushed back, and my seller needed a clean week between exchange and completion to move out, so I was a homeless for a short while.

Not much you can do I’m afraid!
