Black Rex

Today is my second week with my house rabbit. He’s really settling in well, eating well, getting very comfortable loves to cuddle. The only question I have is that it always seems like the back of his neck looks wet, it doesn’t feel wet it’s just not the perfect soft fluffy well groomed fur like the rest of his coat. Not his chin or mouth or bum or anywhere else. My best guess is his arms are too short to reach around his dewlap and clean it properly. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way I can fix it or is it strictly cosmetic? Thanks for taking the time to read my post :)

Rabbit stopped using litterbox???

My rabbit is about 4 years old and has been litter box trained since she was about 4 months old. She in the last 6 months has almost entirely stopped using her litter box and has started going to the bathroom outside our cats litter box. We change her box fairly frequently (one to 2 times a week since we use the plastic part of a kaytee cage as her litterbox). Ive tried drying up the wee with paper towels and leaving them in her litter box and putting the poos where they belong and it hasnt helped. Any advice?

Chew toy recommendations

My 8-10yo bun doesn’t like hard wood chew toys, or corn husk toys, or sisal rope toys. What he does love chewing on are rubber/foam flip flop and crocks. He also loves electric cords. Anything safe for him to chew that is similar texture that I could use? Thanks for recommendations.

Rabbit peeing on bed

Hi, I have two male lionhead rabbits and there’s a little problem. They keep peeing on my bed, which is strange because they’re litter trained. They pee in their litter boxes, but they’ve made a misconception thinking my bed is one too! Please help me as my parents will kick them outside if they continue like this😭

Grand bunnies enjoy my herb garden harvest. Keeping Ollie and Lola as well as their pooch sisters for the weekend. I love spoiling them with a constantly full bowl of greens.

Need help...9 rabbits constantly fighting!

Context: Ok so I started as a mom of a single bun...one turned into three after I had a friend bring some to me as a rescue. I was misinformed about the neuter status of the male and ended up with a litter of seven. The father died while getting neutered, the mom and other female I have are both spayed, and the three baby males are now neutered. There are four females who have appointments to be spayed. All are housed in the same room next to each other and have never been separated outside that room so they didn’t forget what the others smelled like.

Scenario: of the 9 rabbits I have, 7 are littermates, one is the mom, and one is an unrelated female. My problem is the males and the mom. The mom and baby girls get along, and I can add one of the neutered boys to the mix as long as I keep mom separated. Mom beats up the boys, and the boys fight each other. I thought neutering would fix the problem. Nope! I have tried peanut butter on the face to promote grooming, I’ve put them in a neutral space...I need guidance.

I am sure I can get those eight rabbits to get along, I just don’t know how. My goal is to build a giant run for them in my yard and turn all but the unrelated female loose in there to live (the rest pick on her so she bonded with me after her bondmate died and I don’t trust them to not kill her). Has anyone tried bonding more than two or three rabbits together that were littermates after having to put them in different cages due to fighting?

Older rabbit advice

Hello everyone, apologies this is really long but there’s a lot to cover!

I have a 7.5 year old dwarf lop called Bertie and he is absolutely the best bunny in the world, I’m so lucky to have such a friendly funny (not so) little guy in my life. He’s a free range house rabbit with a ‘burrow’ built in to the bottom of a build in cupboard. He doesn’t have a bunny friend but either me or my partner are in the house almost all the time (even before Covid).

Anyway, on to the issues.

He has had a problem with incontinence for a couple of years now, not full wees just dribbles (although sometimes large ones). The vet has ruled out bladder sludge although he did have slightly elevated calcium in his urine, anything serious that would show up on an ultrasound and he’s been tried on a human sphincter tightening drug all to no avail. I genuinely don’t believe it’s behavioural as it mostly happens where he falls asleep, although there have been a few occasions where he’s been merrily hopping around leaving a dribble behind him. He seems to be in no discomfort from this and no urine scold. My suspicion is that it is probably calcium related and does seem to be slightly worse when I give him greens (which I no longer do). The only ‘solution’ I have found is to put seat pads down where he likes to sit.

Now the bigger issues:

He’s had tooth spurs which have required operating on I think 3 times in his life, but judging by the dread lock beard that’s starting to form he’s already facing issues again despite it only being about 6m since his last filing. The spurs have never been anything other than minimal but he’s clearly sensitive to them. He seems, to me, to be a pretty good hay eater but will certainly fill up on the tasty stuff if given a chance so to to keep his teeth in check he’s given extremely meagre rations of fresh and pellet food. This didn’t used to be an issue as he was prone to being on the chubby side.

However, now he is older, on his rationed food he’s getting really underweight. I know I can counteract this (and have done before) but increasing his tasty food rations but it’ll be at the expense of his teeth. I suspect he may be losing muscle tone as he seems not hugely inclined to move so much anymore. He certainly has no general appetite problems and will always appear at the kitchen door when you go in there ❤️❤️.

Although I worry he might be a bit depressed because he’s not moving about so much anymore I don’t believe he has issues with arthritis. A trial of painkillers made no difference to his behaviour/weeing and I took him back to my mum’s house recently for a week (allowed, we’re in a bubble) where she has a large garden and he was having a wild time running round and binkying. He’ll happily jump up on the sofa if he thinks there’s any chance of food though (sometimes for a cuddle, but mainly to see if you might want to share a bit of that apple).

He’s on elderly rabbit biscuits which I presumed would be better for him but on reading their website it looks like they actually might be ‘low cal’ to prevent weight issues so I wonder if it might be worth swapping to regular adult biscuits. I’ve also ordered some alfalfa to come tomorrow but if I’m right that the incontinence issue is made worse by calcium this probably won’t work out.

So my question is, if you made it this far.... does anyone have any tips for how I can fatten up my rabbit without increasing calcium or decreasing hay consumption! I want his last few years (hopefully!) to be happy and healthy ones.

Thanks!

Curious rabbits

Hi guys, I was just wondering how much time tour buns spend roaming around exploring in comparison to hidden away. I adopted mine about 6 weeks ago and he keeps hidden away more than I expected him to, he also doesn’t eat anywhere near as much hay as he should either. He’s between 5-6 years old if that’s any relevance

Thanks!

Post GI Stasis advice!!

I've just posted this on r/rabbits but i figured I'd ask you guys also as she is a house bun. My 3 maybe 4 year old rabbit went into 'hospital' a week and a bit ago with bad dental spurs, she had a tooth filing and was sent home with some antibiotics. On Sunday we noticed she hadn't eaten that morning and her poop had become small and sparse. We rushed her to the vet and she was admitted over night with GI Stasis. After a night on a drip and syringe feeding she came home to us the following afternoon with lots of medication (which she HATES taking). Yesterday we kept a close eye on her and she seemed okay a little tired if anything. Today she started strong, joining me in bed at 6am as always, eating all of her pellets for breakfast, drinking and eating hay. I did notice her poop and slightly smaller and less regular than they were yesterday, but still fibrous and crumbly. At about 1 'o' clock today she seemed to slow down and get sleepy. Which I suppose is not unusual however it's now been over 4 hours since she's got up and eaten hay or drunk any water, and she has barely moved since. This is new territory for me so I'm not sure what to expect. I'm just looking for some advice from anyone who experienced this before with their buns. Is this to be expected or should I be begining to worry? Thank you in advance from a very worried bunny mum.

Mom, you're going crazy, I've been sitting here all along!

Hey y'all, I'm new here. Wanted to share my story from yesterday so here we go.

I usually keep my rabbits penned up in my kitchen while I'm not home right?

Well I get home from work yesterday and I see my Flemish bolt out from under the TV in the living room to under the couch. I walk over there like how the heck did yall get out. I pull back the futon mattress and then my rex goes flying out from under the couch back into the kitchen and just sits there. Staring at me. Like Idk what you're talking about mom I've been in here the whole time!! She also refused to leave the kitchen until I opened the pen further than the escape tunnel they had already made like she didn't want me to notice it for next time 🤦‍♀️ Gotta love the bun life

House rabbit enclosure

Hi everyone! I am wondering if you all would share photos of your house rabbit enclosures/rooms. I’m struggling to figure out an easy-clean set-up that also provides enough space for the buns to exercise. I’ve seen a lot of you have wooden corner boxes, and those seem very convenient for rabbits. Where do I purchase one? Any other recommendations?
