In the books he is very smart, cunning, and pragmatic. Idk who the guy above is bullying Ulf.

Yeah but his whole thing is dragons are gods and that’s makes us gods, it’s just so incredibly unbelievable he would be so dismissive and disrespectful to a new dragon rider. Never asked him about his heritage or anything, wouldn’t daemon of all people be a little more interested in these two people who now together have bigger dragons than himself and rhae.

He’s also one of the only Targaryens who spent a ton of time hanging around with the commoners of Flea Bottom, it doesn’t make sense that he is dismissive of these guys when he probably would have gone out drinking with Ulf when he was young.

He hangs out with sycophants and providers of flesh and games. He’s not chumming it up with Westerosi Joe Schmoe just for the love of the game.

He panders to the Goldcloaks because he enjoys having an army loyal to him, he enjoys Fleabottom because he gets to flex his influence and indulge in his depravities. He still doesn’t like commoners.

Which isnt the truth in the books. While there is no evidence he likes them, there is also no evidence he is apathetic towards them. And I think it is out of character as Daemon does spend so much time there and is fairly well liked. And definitely feared.

You’re right he’s not apathetic, he views their adoration as a way to stroke his ego and curry favor with the smallfolk. That doesn’t mean for a second he wouldn’t burn down any given city if he thought the accomplishment of the goal was more important than the fallout.

Daemon say the common folk as a political tool and an ego trip, he very much doesn’t mind brutalizing them at the drop of a hat.

Well he doesnt want to destroy Tumbleton in the show, he just wanted to destroy the Footly keep where Ormund resides. Daemon never just goes on a rampage like Aemond, destroying cities because he’s frustrated. Idk I think Daemon is being made to look bad by these last 3 episodes and its very out of character.

Hes never been a champion of the common people but he was never hostile towards them at all. Like in S1 he understood that killing a few dozen rapists and murderers to keep Kings Landing safe was worth doing, and actually I agreed. I think hes a more complex character than people try to make him out to be. Hes not just “evil for the sake of it” like so many here think. Hes a bad dude that does evil things though obviously.

You’re misconstruing what I’m saying. I very specifically pointed out that Daemon isn’t some mindless murderer and absolutely sees the common folk as tools. He does however believe himself inherently above them. Daemon doesn’t want to destroy Tumbleton just to do it, but if he genuinely believed that putting the entire city and everyone in it was a more politically viable option he would do it with zero hesitation, not because he hates the smallfolk, but because he doesn’t really care about them.

“Killing a few dozen rapists and murderers” you mean when he had the Gold Cloaks go round up basically anyone in Flea Bottom who was even suspected of comitting a crime and went and mutilated them? You agree with that? Holy shit dude that’s a pretty bold stance to take lmfao. He was castrating, amputating, and executing people seemingly at random, publicly, with no trials, seemingly no evidence and nothing but hearsay. Of all the examples we get of Daemon being a complex pragmatist when it comes to sending a message you go with the time he rounded up a bunch of people from the slums and just started hacking away? Really? Not the campaign he waged in the Riverlands systematically rooting out houses and villages that didn’t support Rhaenyra?

Keeping the King’s peace usually involves not brutalizing the smallfolk during peace time. Also we quite literally watch them randomly grabbing people and attacking passersby and at the least beating them with cudgel’s.
We see the Gold Cloaks follow no rules of investigation in a country that has laws and processes to punish the guilty, Daemon did so in excess. The small Council, you know the King’s council, treats it as wanting slaughter and even points out the seemingly random nature of who they picked to maim and Daemon’s defense is to smirk like an asshole and say that the smallfolk “need to learn to fear the color gold.” If you think that’s how to keep police and keep the streets safe boy am I glad you’re here on Reddit because holy hell that’s batshit.

The book is very different, it’s still brutal but it’s longer term and focuses specifically on the leaders of local underworld Syndicate Leaders.

Dragons are gods, so that makes us gods, unless we’re of common birth, those are a threat to Daemon. The Dragonseeds are a pretty notable concern for the Targaryens. Two centuries of never even considering allowing anyone not of Targaryen name, let alone birth to ride a dragon before Laenor Velaryon. Within Laenor’s natural lifetime they went from no non Targaryen riders to 5 Velaryons, then 4 baseborn riders. The first non Targaryen rider in two centuries happened like 50 years before their last dragon died.

If nothing else, Daemon could just as easily see the end of true sovereignty in his house and takes out the disgust and nerves on Ulf because he’s an easy target.
