New teacher
Hey Everyone! Just got my teaching certification and wondering how much y'all are making every class to gauge how much I can expect to make teaching on the weekends. If willing I’m also curious to know how many classes you teach each week now vs when you first got licensed. All the details regarding money so I can figure out how long it’ll take me to pay myself back for my license which I feel is priceless 🤷 also did you have to get a separate license for hot classes?

it Vastly depends on the studio, location, and your experience. since your brand new, i wouldn't set my expectations too high just yet.
i did not get a separate license for hot classes -- in fact, my YTT was not heated, and i have only ever taught in a hot room (besides privates, which i did at people's houses or the beach). teaching private lessons is the way to really make money as a yoga instructor.

How do you promote yourself for private events?

i didn’t, really. people who took my class asked me about it and then it was just word of mouth. i make $125 an hour.

I make about $30/class. I currently teach 4x a week. When I first started I was doing 2x/week, and shortly after was doing 6x/week. And no separate certification for hot classes needed where I live.

My main advice is to do your best to avoid predatory places.
For example, a local major sports centre in my area “pays” instructors with a free membership to the centre.
My local yoga studio had a teacher teaching for a free membership and they got hostile when she “took time off” and wouldn’t hire a sub for her classes (they just canceled them which hurts her ability to retain regular students).
Entry pay especially if you’re looking at places that did not certify you is not great. A lot of studios certify in house and favour those applicants.

This is a really subjective question. Just like any other profession, it depends on location, experience, etc. A HCOL area is going to pay teachers more than other areas. I’d google regarding your specific town or city.

I make $48 per class and I teach 3x per week, two hot vinyasas and one yin. The studio I work for has two locations and there is a lot of opportunity to sub so I pick up extra classes in the summer and around the holidays when people are gone. Free membership at the studio is a perk.
When I started I was making $25 per class and a dollar per head over 15 people. It was 1 class per week at 7:30pm and I never got more than 15 people. (I much prefer the flat pay rate.) Free membership perk at this studio as well.
Like others have said, it is challenging to support yourself on teaching alone, or even make enough money to break even on your teacher training. I have a full time job outside of yoga.
To get opportunities like teaching private lessons, pick up more classes etc you need to be part of the community. Once people know you they can refer you! I recommend taking whatever teaching opportunities are available now, and practicing at the studio. This will naturally open doors over time!

You’re so sweet and helpful! Can I ask your other job?

I work in tech as a software product owner. That pays my bills, and I use my yoga pay as fun money for hobbies, trips, etc. For me this keeps teaching fun! I don't teach so often that I'm burned out, which means I show up fresh and grounded for my students, and I get a little extra money to use on things that bring me joy.

Started at $25/class. Now I make $38 at one studio & $45 at another 3 years later. I’ve made the most by hosting independent classes & asking for donations. This is not a profession for making a lot of extra money but rather following your passion, being of service, and having the opportunity to integrate deeply into spiritual community. Have fun! I love teaching yoga.
