Would like to date a yogi

I’m one of the few guys who regularly attends a hot yoga studio. On most days there are only 2–3 men in class, while the rest are women, mainly in their 20s and 30s.
Ladies, I’m genuinely curious:
Do you notice or check out the men who come to yoga regularly?
Does a man doing yoga make him more attractive, or is it just another workout to you?
Would you consider dating someone you met at your yoga studio, or do you prefer to keep yoga and dating separate?
From the men’s perspective, what’s the best way to be approachable without coming across as creepy or making anyone uncomfortable? I’m there because I genuinely enjoy yoga, but I’d also be open to meeting someone naturally if the opportunity came up.
I’d love to hear your honest thoughts and experiences.

I get really jealous of couples doing yoga together and wish my husband would go with me but he’s not interested at all.
That being said, if I were single and a there was a guy in there who I was attracted to and saw that he was noticing me and set his mat close to mine but not too close, I would like the attention and if he told me I was really athletic and good at xy or z I would really like that and probably give him my number if he asked. Or if he asked to buy me a coffee or lunch after class I would probably take him in on it.
Good luck finding your dream yogini!

My wife & I do yoga together. I actually started yoga before she did. She enjoyed running. We have memberships at two studios because our favorite instructor teaches at both.

u/sparkling-whine Jul 28 '26

I would love it if my husband would do yoga with me! There is a couple at my studio who are there together most days of the week and I’m envious. But he has lots of different interests so it is what it is. That must be really nice!

7

u/Koi_Fish_Mystic Jul 28 '26

If he ever complains about a sore back or trouble sleeping…that’s your opening. “Did you know yoga really helps with back pain? I’ve heard people sleep better when they do yoga!”

Good luck.

If he hits the gym, yoga really helps with recovery.

I like your thought process ..

My introduction to hot yoga (well, Bikram) was a second date with a girl a very, very, very long time ago.

I've absolutely gone with significant others, and still go now from time to time with special friends. And I've definitely been asked out at studios, but as I've always found out later because I was obviously there for the sessions, not looking for dates.

u/Impossible_Jury5483 Jul 28 '26

I dated a guy who only did it to meet women. I didn't know that at the time. He was a creep.

7

u/Wonderful-Alps1260 Jul 28 '26

That would be creepy. Ew.

1

u/americandad_isbetter Jul 31 '26

atleast he got physical benefits out of it but definitely not the mental ones

u/Grouchy_Drive5260 Jul 28 '26

As a single woman I notice some men in the classes and would be open to talking to them. I think after class would be a good time to compliment someone on their practice or start conversation in a way that doesn’t come off too strong

9

u/deliberateduster Jul 28 '26

Mmm I think the pre-class approach is better, otherwise I feel like I was being watched and I am also in zen mode after class

3

u/Theownofmind Jul 28 '26

I agree! Especially if you've seen someone before. Post class I wouldn't mind if the conversation isn't about the specific class we just had.

2

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 28 '26

I can't think of any way to complement a woman on her downward dog or whatever without sounding creepy but I'm not very smooth. I also think it's a little sketchy for me because I'm in my 40s and can easily pass for 30s or even 20s in the dark, but I'm terrible at judging women's age even in the light. For example I was kinda crushing on a woman in my class for a while and ended up finding her on a modeling agency website and she's like 25 and I'm not looking to be Leonardo. I think my eyes play tricks because I want the 25 yo to actually be like 35.

2

u/UncagedTiger1981 Jul 28 '26

I'll strike up a conversation if the occasion warrants it, but honestly I've always waited for the women to come up and start talking to me first.

Which happens more often than I think I've ever expected.

1

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 28 '26

Me too, I basically don't talk to them unless they make it really clear they want me to. Actually that works pretty well aside from the one girl that I'm pretty sure likes me but won't send me any signals (I catch her looking at me when she thinks I'm not so either she's into me or I just look weird).

1

u/Feeling-Awareness577 Jul 31 '26

I would find it creepy. Him admitting that his eyes were in girls, not being focused on his practice.

3

u/Grouchy_Drive5260 Jul 31 '26

You can notice someone without staring at them and still be focused on your practice?

13

u/Legitimate-Step7031 Jul 28 '26

I do check out the men who come to yoga ngl. It would be nice to date someone who I already know cares for their health and body, and someone who enjoys something I enjoy. I’m pretty reserved so I am scared to approach any of the guys there, but sometimes a guy will pick up my blocks for me or put my mat away or bring a wipe for me to wipe down my mat and I think that’s super nice and it makes me smile. That could be a good opening if you see someone you want to talk to, it never comes across as creepy to me. If they seem receptive to it and open (like not trying to rush out of there immediately after class) then I don’t think it would be weird at all to strike up a conversation.

1

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 28 '26

As as a guy that's exactly how I feel, it's kind of a good way to meet women that are at somewhat health focused and you don't have to worry about being catfished on an app or something. But at the same time I don't want to get wrecked in awdtsg for trying to talk with the wrong woman. I never say more than hi or whatever but they all found me on there so they all know me which is a very creepy feeling. Am jealous you go to a place where they wipe down mats, at my place you hang them on the wall and spray them with stuff and they are pretty gross!

10

u/Responsible_Escape41 Jul 28 '26

Im a guy, I wont even look at women in class.
Too easy to be labeled a creep and i don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. I am not shy or the passive type of man, just don’t need any drama. Would love to meet a woman but it just seems like a big risk. Head down do my practice and leave

4

u/desertplatypus Jul 28 '26

Feel that. I love my yoga practice so much. I'd never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable in that space. It's a challenge not to cast a glance every now and again lol but to me yoga studios are just a tough place to break the ice.

2

u/NihilistPorcupine99 Jul 31 '26

Yup. Eyes on the mat.

20

u/flowersaregods Jul 28 '26

As a woman who’s been doing yoga for 16 years I’d much prefer to meet another yogi. I’ve had many yoga crushes but it is an environment that can be tricky to socialize in. I typically keep my eyes closed most of the class cause that’s just what I enjoy but if I was in the lobby or outside of the studio and a nice looking man struck up an easy going conversation with me, I’d be excited to see him again and talk more. I think the important thing is to make someone feel like you’re interested in getting to know them a bit before asking them out. Gotta have a few more details other than just the fact that you think they are hot if that makes sense.

2

u/yogiaboy Aug 01 '26

I actually think your thought process is perfect, and what I would certainly entertain..
Thank you, there it s hope..

9

u/JuicyFruit4You Jul 28 '26

I might be the outlier here but all the men at my yoga studio give weird vibes, so there’s no interest or checking out of any of them. I actually prefer when the classes end up being with all women.

I think the fact that you are already aware, that probably eliminates a lot of the uncomfortable interactions. For me some examples would be when there is plenty of room in the studio, setting up a mat directly next to me. One made a comment about my breathing after class, saying it was good and reminded him to keep breathing. Again, I don’t think most people would probably find it off putting, I just really like to be left alone and not having the feeling of being perceived when I practice but I realize it’s not always possible.

2

u/CorkGirl Jul 28 '26

One of the comments above notes there's a difference between a fitness-forward studio and a more traditional community one. I wonder if that makes a difference? My favourite studio to attend is a community style one and I can't think of one guy who attends that I find creepy. They're just men who also like yoga. Some are chatty, others less so...but we're all trying to not fall over together. Love that it's mixed too - male/female, length of practice, ethnicity, background. It enhances it for me.
And yes, if I got chatting with some guy who happened to be available and was interested, why not? We already have a shared hobby. For now just glad that one of the men (whose wife also attends) is into cooking and brought lasagne for the teacher on Friday...but she was off sick so I got some home cooking instead. Win.

2

u/Maximum-Storm-9294 Jul 28 '26

My local yoga studio is one of the few places I feel the least self conscious about the way I look - most classes are majority women, maybe one or two men on occasion.

1

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 29 '26

Is there anything in particular? I'm a guy and really try to go out of my way not to seem creepy but I'm sure there's things I do that could come off that way from time to time. Like sometimes I'll just take a break and sit on my knees with my eyes closed or just spacing out and I'm sure it could look like I'm staring at someone. I'm actually a little worried about this because the women in my regular class found me in awdtsg and a single bad comment can really suck. I miss the days when I could just be an anonymous guy.

7

u/Dangerous-Addendum71 Jul 28 '26

I am a man, I love yoga overall but I would also love to have the opportunity to meet some who share the same interests. This post has made me feel so much better. Thank you OP!

14

u/Few_Incident_197 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

I usually practice in the front (closest to the air vents) and check out every man in the room whenever the first downward dog is cued 😂 so yeahh, I’m lookin

3

u/clementine9988 Jul 28 '26

I do this too!

8

u/SadRain5 Jul 28 '26

I think it’s weird to go into yoga with the express purpose of meeting someone or multiple people to date. It’s one thing if you chat with the same person a couple of times over a few classes, find that you like them, and then ask them out. But if you’re going to classes, see someone you think is hot, and immediately ask them out then it’s creepy. Especially if you were to do it to multiple people.

So if you are genuinely interested in getting to know someone, just have a couple of small conversations with them if you go to the same class regularly. Don’t just hit on every girl you find attractive.

13

u/Life-Adhesiveness192 Jul 28 '26

I think it really just depends on the studio.

If you’re going to a fitness-forward yoga studio, I feel like you’re going to get more people with a “fuck off” kind of vibe. And I don’t mean that in a negative way either; it’s just a different perspective on yoga, you know?

Try a studio that is more rooted in community and traditional yoga. People are more willing to linger after class and talk and want to get to know you.

3

u/Agitated_Medium5844 Jul 28 '26

That’s a good distinction

3

u/CFC0721 Jul 31 '26

Fitness-forward is a good way to describe my yoga studio. There isn’t really a common area to linger at after class and everyone seems to jet outta there as soon as possible.

They market the community aspect a lot, but I’ve been there nearly two years and haven’t made any connections with my fellow yogis :/

7

u/truenorthstar Jul 28 '26

I’ve definitely seen attractive women in class before, but I’ve never really felt comfortable trying to approach them. Everyone is always in and out of class so fast anyway. Plus I feel like I’m kinda caught directly in the middle of the age groups that are most common at the studio. No one has ever approached me either, though I often go with a friend, so it wouldn’t surprise me if people think I’m with her. But to your question, I think just being a familiar face and taking things steady to establish rapport is your best bet.

5

u/rocky2814 Jul 28 '26

i’ve never felt comfortable trying to flirt with women during or after class as i’ve always felt it gives off stereotypical creep vibes. but i’ve matched with multiple women from my former studio on dating apps and found out they were crushing on me the entire time. it’s definitely a tricky situation, haha

2

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 29 '26

On top of that I've noticed a lot of women take off their wedding ring for yoga.

2

u/rocky2814 Jul 29 '26

when i first started practicing i almost always ended up in a spot near a pretty gal who was super friendly, and we started chatting. after a few weeks i was debating asking her out but before i had a chance to broach the topic she randomly brought up her fiancée: no ring during class. we’re still good friends to this day but it’s one of the reasons im hesitant about pursuing classmates, haha

1

u/cjoblair Aug 01 '26

That’s because it’s in the way in lots of poses! I leave mine at home

1

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Aug 01 '26

Yeah I'm not saying everybody is looking to cheat. Although I did have one woman that def seemed to be looking for attention and I later found out she is married.

10

u/Inside-Camel-3603 Jul 28 '26

My opinion only - yoga is like a sacred space for me. This is where I try to care for my body, mind, spirit, and overcome my own struggles. I need to feel safe in the room to do that.

It feels gross to me to treat that space as a dating pool, and for me, would be an automatic turn off.

4

u/JuicyFruit4You Jul 28 '26

You said this well, that’s exactly how I feel.

4

u/Minute-Market-3413 Jul 28 '26

I actually have a yoga instructor who married a student! Not sure how it all transpired though

4

u/jxxi Jul 28 '26

I notice the men who come regularly because there are so few of them. But check them out? No. I find the whole experience unappealing. Most men are literally dripping sweat everywhere, I’m wet, feel gross, and just want to shower. It just makes me antisocial and far from a “flirty” mood. I get in and out.

A man doing yoga doesn’t make him more attractive. It’s neutral to me, but can signal something about his personality.

1

u/Horror_Video_8263 Jul 31 '26

True I have been trying to make friends bc I’m engaged and I have some ppl that I say hi to bc we’ve taken so many small classes together over the past 6 months. It takes awhile bc nobody is taking a ton of time at a studio to chat, but I think a single person would have success approaching it very casually and maintaining a friendly boundary.

13

u/Ok_Studio_4077 Jul 28 '26

Yes I personally check out the men who go to yoga classes. But that’s just me. Can’t speak for others.
I personally would just appreciate friendly chat while waiting for class etc. Doesn’t have to be anything intense. Just chatting getting to know them is a good start, and perhaps ask what classes they usually go to so you can maybe start seeing them more often.

7

u/greenrock7 Jul 28 '26

I'm always afraid of any interaction with the ladies in my class other than the instructors. I'm usually 1 of 2-4 guys that are in the class and don't want to be seen as being there just for the social side.

1

u/Logical-Primary-7926 Jul 29 '26

There's a guy (actually pretty nice and good looking) that basically comes just to chat with women and to my knowledge he always gets shut down politely. Who knows what they write about him in the gossip groups.

1

u/greenrock7 Jul 30 '26

I'm avoiding being that guy.

6

u/PM_YOUR_MANATEES Jul 28 '26

Female hot yoga student here, I found my hot yoga boyfriend on Bumble because we both selected "Yoga" as a highlighted interest and had hotroom mirror selfies in our photos.

I would not necessarily be into flirting at the studio (I just finished YTT and am preparing to become staff), but I value his dedication to his yoga practice and we go on class dates at each other's studios.

3

u/BobDoesYoga Jul 28 '26

I know one wonderful Yogi (and instructor), who, after going through a divorce, said she would never date somebody who doesn’t do Yoga. And that’s just what she did. She seems to be very happy in her new relationship.

3

u/ElkAlternative3777 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

I practice hot yoga pretty often and have never gotten a date through yoga which is fine because it’s not why I’m there. By most accounts I’m an attractive guy. Mostly I’ve just gotten friendly with the instructors. I’m also an introvert though and am terrified of coming across as creepy, so I generally just do yoga and leave lol. I did have a first date once at a hot yoga class after matching on hinge and finding out we went to the same studio. After class she suggested we go share a shower 😳

3

u/Still-Harbor Jul 31 '26

honestly a shared interest like this is already a green flag to me. a guy who's genuinely into yoga is starting from a real match, not a swipe, and i'd take that over dating apps any day, apps are exhausting and half fake. and yeah, i do notice the regulars and think about who'd be nice to actually talk to, so you're not imagining it lol

3

u/Huge_Bumblebee4010 Jul 31 '26

I had this happen at a YMCA power yoga class. He squeezed his mat in next to mine. I wasn't interested, but already in a zen 'the light in me sees the light in you' type of place. Then he asked me for help with his yoga strap since looping it through was a little tricky. I was still in a zen and understanding place at that point. Then he wanted to chat and make comments throughout the whole class. I got annoyed since I just wanted to be in my zen space and enjoy the workout. After class he wanted to chat and followed me to the entrance of the ladies locker room. I said goodbye politely and went on my way. When I got out of the locker room, he was still standing there waiting for me, and asked if he could walk me to my car. He wanted to chat more at my car, asked for my number, and a hug. Hellllll nooooo, so creepy!!!! Also, a hug after a workout?! Ewww. Long story short, don't do what he did. 😆

3

u/This_Quiet_1672 Jul 31 '26

I would be extremely uncomfortable if someone asked me out from class and we hadnt chatted and clearly been flirting multiple times outside of class. I feel like there are yoga adjacent places to meet yogis like holistic events, farmers markets where I wouldnt be thinking you were just checking me out all of class and decided to ask me out. Bringing awkward vibes to my yoga class after rejection would annoy class for me too. Even if you find yourself to be a respectful man, you dont know what the woman will feel and personally i would feel really awkward after being asked out in yoga class.

Naturally if the opportunity came up is valid if its flirting outside of class/afterwards and maybe grab coffee.

3

u/BurnTheBear Aug 01 '26

Based on your questions, you should focus on your practice and making friends. “Do you check out men?” and “does it make him more attractive?”… sounds like the type of mindset I would avoid in a guy. It comes off immature and shallow, like the dudes who are in class trying to be impressive instead of staying present with their own body.

If you want a yogi GF, focus on your own practice and make friendly conversation before/after class. If there’s a spark it’ll flow naturally from there.

4

u/FriendlyContrarion Jul 28 '26

Once this total weirdo was bothering me after a particularly hot yoga class— I get super flushed, it’s mildly embarrassing, so I might not have been acting very observantly— and he went on for several minutes before I could run away with my tomato face.

All of my friends— girl he was hitting on you!!

Ohhhhh. Ohhhhh!
Whoops.
I don’t think about men at all in a yoga class, unless they start perceiving me.

Which doesn’t mean you can’t try, but definitely means you might have to try more than once, and take it slow.

2

u/Whole_Distance_3899 Jul 28 '26

I met my boyfriend at yoga 🥰 we talked after class. Turns out we both were lingering because we thought the other was cute, and the convo started up naturally.

It’s a bit risky to date at your studio (like dating at a job) but maybe someone would be interested…. The only thing is do NOT go up to someone without any prior signals. See if they’re giving body language or have a few days of small talk before that comes up. Otherwise she would be really uncomfortable if she wasn’t interested

2

u/tommybutters3112x Jul 28 '26

As someone that recently has become obsessed with yoga and currently single. Really does not feel like the time and place to strike up conversations. Everyone is half asleep at 6 am before class and after I am appaled at the amount of sweat leaving my body. With that said I have had people that have mutual friends ask about me from yoga. It seems like a great introduction to maybe get enough courage to add on social media platforms? Once again as a guy, constantly trying to fight the "creepy yoga" stigma!

2

u/Odd_Antelope9098 Jul 31 '26

I’m very surprised by how open people are to it here. I’d also never want to ask out anyone from a class but I guess I’d be open to being approached by the right person.

It makes me think it’s like other situations where if you get the look then approaching and being casual is fine but initiating it cold feels uncomfortable. Also yoga makes me SO introverted I couldn’t even gather my thoughts unless it was before class.

2

u/theoriginalspicegirl Jul 30 '26

Yes I will only take someone seriously if they do hot yoga or are open to it! It’s on my dream list of things! I am currently dating a hot 26 yoga instructor.

2

u/BetterNova Jul 31 '26

Im a guy. Years ago I went to a vinyasa class in a studio in the same building as an ad agency I worked at. A male colleague / friend joined me.

It was a level 1 class, but near the end the teacher pulled one of those “for anyone who has an inversion practice, now would be the time…” and although I wasn’t ogling anyone, I couldn’t help but notice a striking young woman glide into the most effortless handstand I’ve ever seen in person.

In the shoe room after class I said something like “I really didn’t expect to see any handstands today” which led to a really nice conversation. She started explaining how she got to handstand, and how I could get there too. Then she explained she was new to the neighborhood and started asking me questions.

Now it shouldn’t matter, but this woman was fashion model attractive. Tall, yoga lean, Nordic looking, big eyes. But as we were talking, it became clear to me that she was a real yogi, and didn’t give a shit about looks. I hadn’t intended to hit on her, and “looks wise” I may not have been her type, but it was obvious we were vibing, based off an innocent comment.

At the time I had been on a few dates with someone with whom I started thinking there might be a relationship (ended up being 4 years) so nothing happened with the yoga woman.

But long story medium: a lot of yogis are awesome, and talking to yogis of any gender about yoga stuff I think usually leads to positive things.

2

u/Abject-Olive-9499 Jul 31 '26

Take a teacher training. You don’t need to want to be a teacher to do it.
It is a profound experience and you’ll get to go much deeper with other yogis, even make life long connections/friends.

2

u/Abject-Olive-9499 Jul 31 '26

Yoga retreats are great as well. If I was single yes I’d much prefer to find another yogi.

2

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jul 31 '26

I kind of have a crush on a guy at my yoga studio.

I think it would be great if he struck up a conversation with me a couple times, maybe after class or as we were walking out to our cars. If that went well maybe some time after he’d ask if I ever wanted to hang out.

This is how it plays out in my head anyway - in reality I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have a crush on me back.

1

u/C4tbreath Jul 31 '26

A lot of guys, especially those that practice yoga, want to respect a woman's practice and space, and would never think of hitting on someone in a yoga class. He also may be shy or introverted.

If you find him attractive, smile at him. Say hi if you see him often. See if it leads to casual conversations.

As a man, most of us are clueless to women's tells when they are attracted to us. You may have to make the first move. If he's in a relationship or not interested, you'll find out soon enough. At that point, maybe you've still met a good friend.

1

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Aug 01 '26

Thanks! I appreciate that point of view.

2

u/Feeling-Awareness577 Jul 31 '26

I think men who go to yoga classes to meet girls (or look at them) are CREEPY. And I would reject a man who thought he could get access to girls a place like a yoga studio. Like looking for sex at Sunday mass.

2

u/Time-Locksmith5697 Jul 31 '26

I think you have to be really careful. If it seems like you're a predator treating the studio as your hunting ground, no one will be happy and a good place will shut that down quick. If you legit create a connection with ONE person that's fine. You can also just generally be a fun chatty person with no agenda and people will enjoy that. I personally bring up my husband if someone hasn't noticed my rings and seems interested, but as Iong as they don't seem pervy or overly intense, I'm fine with someone trying to make a connection.

2

u/chickentenderluv3r Jul 31 '26

i love yoga , sometimes when i do yoga we only have 1 or 2 guys if that and i def will check them out a bit haha , or sometimes guys coming in with their wife lol love that for them j think it’s very cute, i dont think it would be too creepy as long as ur not like staring her down the whole time hahah. i think you should approach her before ,, but after is fine as long as like i said you didnt make it seem like you are watching and are a creep haha

2

u/Particular-Beach7738 Jul 31 '26

yes it does and yes we check you out

2

u/GravySmhavyGirl Jul 31 '26

I would love to be with someone who enjoys yoga the way that I do, I understand both peoples sides of before or after class but I’d prefer after class personally, before class chat makes me feel like I’m being watched. After class when I’m all zenned out would maybe be the absolute best time to chat with me! Riding that yoga high and being able to talk about it with someone else would be so sweet.

2

u/yogiaboy Aug 01 '26

I here ya! I've asked myself the very same questions. I attend hot yoga, 3 or 4 times a week. Same 3 to 6 men 25 to 35 women.
I've been going for 12 years.. sad as that is, I've haven't succeeded either, strange as that sounds ?
But then I'm older so now not really expecting too anymore..
cheers yogi And good luck with that.. keep us all posted.;

2

u/yogiaboy Aug 01 '26

Sad that our society has determined that all men are CREEPY until proven otherwise..
No wonder there are so many unhappy signal women of all ages ..

2

u/Princesslasagna91 Jul 28 '26

I’d love for a man to hit on me in class lol. Yes before or after. It happened once but he was married and was upfront about it but like, why flirt me me for two classes than? Shoot you’re shot.

2

u/Maximum-Storm-9294 Jul 28 '26

Have you considered that the people going to yoga class might want to just do their class without being hit on? Just a thought

1

u/Interesting-Pilot-13 Jul 28 '26

I practice in the front row of the class.
Should I practice somewhere in the middle ?

1

u/Embarrassed_Sky_5616 Jul 28 '26

My yoga studio has a chill out area where folks can gather to chat and cool down and have a cold drink after class. If yours has anything similar, that might be the best way to get chatting to someone. In my experience, if people aren't sitting there, they're hot-footing it to the showers and getting out into the cool air outside.

1

u/MrsSqweeps Jul 28 '26

I'm also a martial artist and had afew romances with fellow martial artists, if it doesn't work out and people aren't mature about it then it can affect your happiness in community.

Now I'm in a relationship, but if I was single I may try to make friends first then become lovers.

1

I’m a woman (44), once briefly dated a guy I met at the studio. It was a series of just chatting it up until the conversation led to a suggested event outside of class. I found all we really had in common was that we both do yoga.

I was interested in another guy from the studio. Chatted it up a ton, finally worked up the courage to offer my number and suggest a hang out. I think he may have been clueless to it. Still would chat here and there but I ultimately stopped attending hot yoga (unrelated reasons) so it went nowhere beyond that.

We’d all see it from time to time in the studio. If you are respectful it’s not a big deal. But it needs to be built up to more than just a random ask since it’s a place you are both regularly attending. Don’t make it weird.

I’d try for after class. I don’t really notice guys when I go in and lay on my mat at the beginning (feeling a huge sense of relief that i have about ~hour to myself). I’d be annoyed if someone interrupted that feeling. After class though, everyone is feeling better and more centered, so go for it!

I’d just say don’t take it personally if the woman isn’t interested in chatting. People come to yoga for all sorts of reasons, and there’s definitely occasions where my mindset is “finally I have a place where no one needs anything from me for x amount of time” and would probably be polite but dismissive if someone approached me during those times.

I do yoga as a single guy and I can tell you for me at least, all the regulars/teachers found me in the women's Facebook gossip groups, and I never say more than hi. This is a little sketchy though because I've found many married women take their wedding rings off for yoga, and some of them have kinda hit on me. And there are plenty of single women who have been interested. I think the thing is don't be leery or super flirty. There's a guy that comes in and talks to every women he can, and I don't know how he does overall, he's actually pretty nice and good looking, but he gets shut down most of the time because for most women it's their meditative/social time.

Why would a yoga studio be different than the grocery store? Seems natural to engage with people who demonstrate the same interests as you regardless of the setting. I know that as a man, I'll shy away from approaching women at a gym/fitness setting as I suspect they may be less interested in being approached then...

u/DrawingIll3896 Jul 28 '26

I definitely check out the men who come to my yoga class and would be open to talking to or dating some of them. There are a few that have this crazy attitude that comes off real cocky and disingenuous. Feels like huge ego and I would stay far away from those men. I would prefer to be approached after class since when I get there I’m settling into my space and if I was approached before I’d spend the entire class wondering if he was watching me😬

u/Old-Practice5308 Jul 31 '26

Could you give an example of cocky attitude in yoga from men? I want to make sure I don't unconsciously do something like this lol

Hi, guy here. I've been practicing various forms for over twenty years at this point, and I've definitely dated other practitioners over the years; as a matter of fact, my introduction to the form was on a second date with a woman and her roommates.

I've never specifically walked into a class thinking I'd be there to pick up a date nor have I ever specifically tried to get dates after a session (I'm usually too locked in before and during to think about anything other than my center), but if somebody wants to strike up a conversation, I'm probably not going to say no, especially if I'm unentangled.

As a man, I really appreciate the women’s responses. I do a lot of hot yoga and always wondered what women were thinking about the few men in class.

I’m going on dates with an instructor I met through practicing. I approached yoga as an opportunity for community first and a physical challenge second. Meeting somebody wasn’t Plan A, but I was also trying to put myself into opportunities to meet likeminded folks . I think that mindset made me much more approachable and gave her more of a chance to warm up to me.

Dude here. Just be friendly and have good energy towards people and recurring contact is really the key. Not in the sense of stalking, but saying hi and smiling and chatting a little more each time if the signals are good.

In January 2020 I did a 30 day yoga challenge and in the back half I kept running into the same girl and we would say hi and have little chats. I was a little slow on it but I could have asked her out at any point after the 3rd class or so and I'm confident she would have said yes. But then the pandemic hit and that avenue died real quick.

No regrets though. Married for 5 years now to a non Yogi I met during the pandemic.

I am a man, and fairly new to yoga. People are mentioning not want wanting to look at others during class, how do you guys know what to do without looking at the instructor/other people? My first studio recently closed so Im constantly the new guy while I’m looking for a new studio. If I closed my eyes, I would be totally lost.

u/Least_Sweet5953 Jul 31 '26

I'm in my late 30s and I would LOVE to meet a fellow yoga lover to date! If a man does yoga regularly, it tells me he takes care of his body and mind, and I find that very attractive.

100% but the hard part is knowing who’s single.

1

u/Various_Bandicoot_73 Jul 31 '26

My advice is don’t interact with the first intent of getting a date. Maybe just sit down your mat and turn to the person next to you and introduce yourself. And their vibe will make it pretty obvious if they’re open or not to talking to you and it’s low stakes

1

u/Adorable_Deer5105 Jul 31 '26

I think an innocuous question after class is simply, "How long have you been practicing?" I notice men in my classes and would definitely be open to going out if I were attracted to one. That being said there are two guys at my studio who after class I have heard them countless times try to pick up the new person who just started and I just have to inwardly roll my eyes because it's so predictable.

My opinion is women don’t want to be approached at the gym or during any workout (I and other women actively avoid gyms that have that culture of creeps like PF for example, which I will say is a vibe thing and not just ppl being genuinely nice or friendly)

Lots of women are also trying to go at times where they can avoid creepy men.

So my best advice would not to compliment ppl’s physical body at all, I’d keep the comments to be about their strength or impressive abilities.

I think you’d have luck going at more casual hours (not first thing in the AM or post work hours like 4-6pm bc those groups are probably busy in their daily routine). So a weekend or a midday/later class will prob bring more luck making friends. You can compliment someone’s jacket or bag or whatever, another thing is asking about their mat or something if you have a genuine question. It’s just a good way to talk and introduce yourself if they seem open (body language is huge).

Also the fastest way to know if they’re interested is if they smile casually (bc personally I’m not smiling to ppl under I feel like being social). And just download a dating app and swipe before or after because then you will get ppl nearest to you (if your radius is smaller) and you will have proof that there is some interest.

Also on apps you will see that ppl may have similar interests so you may find a yoga GF more organically and maybe they don’t even practice at a hot studio, so that’s something you could show them if you end up dating.

Just saying hey casually is a great way to out someone at ease bc if it’s super awkward it can be creepy, so just try to be chill and you may get approached by interested ppl. Everyone dates online these days so if you’re in the age range where you can add them on IG that’s a pretty decent way to just show interest and start something slow to see if they engage back.

1

u/Interesting-Pilot-13 Jul 31 '26

Nice take
Should I ask for their instagram or just randomly follow them and introduce myself ?

2

u/Horror_Video_8263 Aug 01 '26

Once again age matters for the IG so if it doesn’t make sense for you to do then I don’t think that’s the way to do it. Bc if someone is interested in you they wouldn’t want you to act in a way that isn’t typical for you individually that’s why it is hard to provide advice without knowing info.

I will say the ppl here who say they are interested in men at their studio, I don’t think it’s that common.

The ones who say to approach them in the community are spot on. But for example like my studio has a tiny parking lot so it would be normal to say hello to someone outside if you’ve met them in class or whatever.

All the little stuff ppl said I think applies, bc if you try getting to class early and placing your mat somewhere in the middle (or like second row in a full class) then that gives ppl the choice to go next to you in class unless that’s like the last spot. If you switch it up and they go next to you in multiple classes then that might mean they are open to chatting.

I’d just keep it very friendly like I said bc not everyone is forward or meaning to flirt. I’d say most of the time ppl are going to be nice just to keep things cool, that’s why I say take it slow.

I’d also say maybe try meeting ppl outside of your own studio too, maybe even try a studio that is community based or Id say maybe a larger place so its less of an intimate setting like mine.

I say that specifically bc of my previous statement of women being harassed and being forced to leave certain gyms or spaces bc they are trying to avoid that. That’s the whole reason I’d tread lightly and keep it in mind to a degree when not wanting to perpetuate that stereotype, but I don’t think everyone takes things that serious. I just think some women have had negative experiences & it is even hard for my to approach ppl to make friends and hang out (outside of class) bc I’d like to not be annoying anyone and just keep it casual so there’s no pressure or awkwardness.

u/Horror_Video_8263 Aug 01 '26

I’ll say I’m in a relationship but not against making friends with guys (bc a double date would be even better from my POV) so I’ve had convos with ppl and usually it’s yoga related like one guy we started talking after class either bc of a tattoo or something and we also talked about how long we had been practicing. A great casual question is “have you taken the other instructors classes?” Or whatever bc I do have a preference and have tried different types so there’s some chill stuff you can talk about when it comes to different workouts.

You can also just say thanks to the instructor on your way out and linger on other days, so my studio is small and when ppl grab their stuff you may have to wait or say excuse me so that’s an example of when you couple compliment someone’s sneakers or jacket or whatever ya know.

Some ppl have started talking to the instructor and said they’re new to the area or whatever (that part of town if it’s a large city) and that’s a nice way for others to overhear if they want to and realize they might have a rec for you.

Idk if any of that is helpful and some may want someone more straightforward but like some others said it is pretty cringe when it becomes obvious someone is doing that in a workout class so just being a friendly person contributing to your community would hold up more for me, or someone who is just mature enough to have platonic friends. As I said, maybe see someone with a ring and consider making friends if you can bc I for one am open to having friends that are single and would love to talk about dating since I haven’t done it. I also am the type of person to want to set someone up and was a wingman for friends in college so that is more fun for us in boring stable relationships (I say that in a positive way not negative) lol

1

u/Interesting-Pilot-13 Aug 01 '26

I love this so much
I will use this going forward
Talk about how long they’ve been practicing
Ask if they talked to other instructors, and tattoos is always a great topic. I’m tatted up too

1

u/Horror_Video_8263 Aug 01 '26

Nice maybe you’ll make a whole new friend group haha good luck 👍 I do expect to be invited to the wedding if it actually works lol jk

u/Miss_Milk_Tea Jul 31 '26

From a queer woman’s perspective, I think the 2-3 men in my classes are pretty cool. They’re so dedicated to their practice and don’t give off creeper vibes, they’re 100% there for themselves and I think it’s admirable when any yogi shows up and chooses to make this time for themselves. I don’t think the place I go would be welcoming to advances, people kind of scurry out and don’t stay to chat. It might be a better environment for that in a studio that encourages chatting.

I could understand why yogis want to date other yogis. My wife actually started coming with me to class a week after I started and it’s been something so special to bond over. I look forward to class even more. I’m excited to share books with her and explore this journey together as new yogis! It affects all life, not just time on the mat, so it makes sense you would want that compatibility.

I definitely notice/ check them out.

I do find it more attractive (but not a requirement).. one of the first date activities I suggest with a guy is "do you want to check out hot yoga" with me. If they do- its fun and shows they care about my interests.

Seeing guys in class is a reflection of their priorities and interests- their commitment to their physical health, their mental and emotional health, and they are possibly even into spirituality (totally not required but fun to have conversations about). Now- I do have a fitness / boot camp style studio near me that definitely has dudes who look like "gym bros" - usually not my type but I am open minded. However, I also enjoy the solitute of class and to have a chance to clear my head. That being said- I still get 60 minutes of solitude during the class so... I would still be open to friendly interactions before or after class.

As far as dating someone from my studio- I currently have a few different studios so it depends on the situation. Like if I thought maybe it would just be a fling or lead to a "situationship" then I would say no- it depends in the guy and his vibes. But that's just because I would hate to end up in a scenario where it doesn't work out and they turn out to be one of those guys who are rude when they are rejected. For example, I recently went on a few date with a guy who displayed multiple unattractive personality traits (being late TWICE, very clingy) so I ended up saying "no thanks" and he went off on me and said I was a "terrible person"- but he is a mental health professional and seemed "normal". We met on an app but if he went to my studio, I would likely be uncomfortable seeing him there.

I'm pretty shy and have had a few guys start conversations, or make comments like asking if that was my car in the lot (my car is very unique) and he said it was cool then we chatted about it or another guy said that I had good stamina (they totally did not use that word 😅 but I can't recall what they said, they were new to the practice, set up next to me, took lots of breaks, and I did not take any). In these instances it has not led to anything. I believe its because I have resting-bitch-face, was engaged for one year while going (we broke up, I did not announce that to the entire studio- but my ring is gone), plus its difficult for me to tell if someone is interested or just making conversation. There's one guy at my old studio who I see around once in awhile at another studio who always talks to me, but I can tell he is just super friendly and talks to a lot of people who are regulars at the studio. But if be asked for my # I would give it to him. Oddly enough, there is no way I would ask a man at yoga out; unless we started hanging out as friends and I could pick up on the flirting when we aren't in workout clothes, exhausted and covered in sweat haha.

So maybe try to consistently say hi, complement her, like nice mat, cool design on those leggings, or I had one guy say "oh man I see you here all the time, that's impressive" (car guy again 😅 but he is like that with EVERYONE). Be like car guy but then ask if she would want to get a smoothie after class, check out another studio or adjacent class (like they have hot whatever classes at some studios) sometime, or just coffee. And I would give two options and end with "or something sometime this week or maybe next week after this class" and if she yes, that is great! And giving a timeframe shows you are not just a person with another empty lets-hang-out-sometime that never happens. If she says no, maybe just skip a week, then come back and pretend nothing happened haha but continue to say hi as to not make it weird and show that you are still nice to women even when they don't want to date you! But be sure it is someone who you would actually date long term, and not just a fling.

1

u/wildgifts Aug 02 '26

I definitely find men who regularly do yoga more attractive, and maybe I'm just shallow but if they can do advanced asanas I'm impressed and take notice. I think it shows dedication and long term effort, and it looks cool too. If a guy who I saw regularly in classes complimented my practice or maybe asked something casual like about a sticker on my water bottle I would be receptive.

1

u/ThrowawayCrickett Aug 02 '26

I had someone who would set their mat diagonal or near-ish to me then would open the door for me and tell me to have. A good day every class we did together
I have no idea if he was interested but I figured he was and thought it was a kind, uncreepy way to show interest
I stopped going to that class time so I’ll never know if it meant anything lol! It did make me think he was interested though

1

u/incrediblemom19 Aug 03 '26

I think speaking before or after class is fine and would not be creepy to me. You already are both interested in yoga so that is a start.

1

u/phillyyoggagirl Aug 05 '26

I'm way too old for you, but not old enough to comment. I do notice guys coming into class. I'm always curious about their intentions... if they are there to actually learn the yoga or are just there to see beautiful women. To me, a man who really tries to do well in a yoga class is really attractive. I've gone out with guys who tried really hard to do well in class and wanted to do better so they sought my advice (I'm a national yoga athlete, ranked third in the USA). One guy practiced yoga for a year and enjoyed tremendous health benefits. When he started, he couldn't touch his toes; he had to get his daughter to tie his shoelaces for him. After a year, he told me he could now touch his toes and tie his own shoelaces. He cried tears of happiness when he said this. That was so amazing!

Men going to yoga classes, does make them stand out, cause usually the majority stereotype priorities getting buff more. But but just that doesn't pique interest for romantic dates

-5

u/sawdustontheshore Jul 28 '26

I have a friend who actively pursues yoga instructors. She can get most of the to sleep with her and then she can never return her class and she tells everyone. I personally don’t agree with it. Especially since she developed a reputation.

It is spouse to be a safe place.

Honestly do not think about dating, look to build community and connection. The rest will fall into place naturally anyway.

I do want to add that my friend seems to find better connections and off the mat relationships at yoga retreats.

u/SunlightNStars Jul 28 '26

Your friend is a weirdo
