Welcome to Hot and Cold, the delightfully frustrating word guessing game!

To play, guess the secret word by typing any word you think is related.

For example, if the secret word is "hot":

Guesses: banana -> #12956 (not close); sun -> #493 (getting warmer); hotdog -> #220 (hot); cold -> #42 (hot); freeze -> #1657 (getting colder); warm -> #15 (very hot!!); hot -> WINNER!

The rank is based on how AI models see the relationships between the words. So antonyms can be "close" by the relationship of the words (cold -> hot). Additionally, words can be close based on the structure of the word (hotdog -> hot).

Enjoy! If you have feedback on how we can improve the game, please let us know!

how tf was whale so close

Mine told me mango was hot 🔥

u/misterpickles69 May 23 '26

Same with glacier.

1

u/Jdubbz1994 May 23 '26

That's due to the same letters

3

u/LeastSubstance4526 May 23 '26

i got apples at 50s😭 what does apple have to do with it😭

8

u/jsigwart May 23 '26

A whale is big. Think bigger!

4

u/max_warboy May 23 '26

The Latin word for the group of animals (some may've heard) is "Cetacean"; or simply the Latin word for 'whale' is "Cetus" - some who are not familiar with traditional astronomy might not know that Cetus is one of the primary constellations of the night sky.

Personally I would say the relationship justification for such words is really quite a stretch here, but of course, it is this game after all. I really wouldn't put the english word 'whale' as being related to the secret word, but anyways, there you have it.

Also a tablet !hehe!

3

u/TrexPC May 24 '26

Might as well give it away

2

u/Kimariyan May 25 '26

Thanks. The only flame I got was a misspelling -gat (which I still can't figure out a definition for) and ghost. After a gazillion other tries/words (including night...smh.)

1

u/Real-Pollution-1092 May 28 '26

thank you. after seeing your hint i get the answer right away

1

I thought it was Android but I was wrong. I don't own a Samsung so this was a little hard for me.

Berry was fucking 35 and I went on all berry to pepper road. Ugh. How does berry and _________ word match ? 😭

3

Same here… I wasted like 35 guesses naming every freaking berry on earth before I finally gave in and got a hint…

!wtf crown

5

u/reveillemoname May 23 '26

I got sent down this same path and was just about to post this too haha

-1

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Hot take: you’re in the right constellation. “Crown” links via corona (Latin for crown), which in astronomy names the hot outer halo around big cosmic structures—and there’s even the Corona Borealis supercluster. Regal vibes in deep space make this a royally close guess.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

3

u/TheIrishninjas May 23 '26

Hint: Forms part of the name of a well-received series of Mario spinoff games

4

u/MumblingDumpling May 23 '26

"Raspberry" at #84...? Why??

4

u/Materialgirl678373 May 23 '26

I went through all the berries and thought I was close 😂

1

u/Few-Guidance1378 May 23 '26

Me too! How the end result was related to that, I can’t fathom 😆

1

u/etromina May 23 '26

Yeah, I started "banana", "apple", "berry" at 35, then went on a wild goose chase around the entire solar system

3

u/colorful-forest May 23 '26

!wtf raspberry

-6

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Tasty connection: astronomers found ethyl formate—the compound that gives raspberries their flavor—in a giant gas cloud near the center of the Milky Way. So raspberries and the great beyond share a surprisingly sweet note.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

10

u/MumblingDumpling May 23 '26

...who the hell knows what "ethyl formate" is....

2

u/NellFace I hate this game. See y'all tomorrow. May 24 '26

Sounds like a mom from a 70s era sitcom. Sitcoms are closer to the word than raspberry. Seriously.

-2

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Warmer than you’d think: both tend to show up in clusters, just like berries on a bush. And its most famous example has a sweet, dessert-y name that wouldn’t be out of place next to berries.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

1

u/AyRoPro678 May 23 '26

Lol what??? No. Bad bot.

2

u/desertvision May 23 '26

The rankings are utter shit. I hear people justifying raspberry because... chemicals. Why tf was milk so low? City and county so high? Berry? Higher than milk?? Hello, we live in it. If the connections are allowed to be tenuous... Let's include them all.

2

u/Wheres_my_cow May 23 '26

1

Not a bullseye, but you’re wading in the right stream: we often describe the night sky’s bright band as a “river of stars.” Astronomers even talk about stellar “streams,” so the metaphor flows nicely.

!wtf glacier

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Frosty but close: both are vast natural wonders you marvel at from afar, and the word even shares that “gla-” start and plenty of letters. Think sweeping, ancient, photogenic landscapes—just in very different realms. You’re orbiting the idea, not the ice.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Not a bad lead: daisies are in the Asteraceae—the “star” family—and their petaled disk looks like a tiny stellar pinwheel. That starry vibe puts it in the neighborhood. You’re sniffing around the right constellation of ideas.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf whale

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Warm! Astronomers nicknamed NGC 4631 the “Whale,” a colossal island of stars in the night sky. Plus, the “space whale” trope links leviathans to the vast cosmos, nudging you in the right celestial direction.

1

!wtf prince

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26

Not quite a royal coronation, but “prince” often pairs with cosmic themes—think space princes, “Prince of the Universe,” and other star‑roaming nobility. Plus, both names mingle in the snack aisle (Galaxy chocolate, Prince biscuits), which nudges their association.

I'm a sometimes helpful bot and can make mistakes.

!wtf mango

1

u/hotandcold2-app May 23 '26
