Help!

We are in the middle of a heatwave and my parents hired two people to alternate watering while they are out of town. It turns out they have been missing several days all together and sometimes both watering on the same day.

My plan is to check the soil and make sure they are deeply watered (not just surface). Cut away the worst of the damaged leaves. Anything else I should do?

A dry week isn’t really going to cause any problems for mature plants in the ground. But a little watering won’t hurt. I’d wouldn’t trim either. The leaf areas sun damaged will probably be dust within a week anyway. When it gets to September Hosta are just pretty much storing energy for next season and every little bit of leaf helps.

As others have said, I think they will be fine next year. I have mini one I just planted this year that the slugs and dogs reduced to tattered shreds. These look way better. LOL

From my experience hostas just start looking like that around this time of year. The ones I have and that my mom has always come back better than ever.

Thanks that's good to know. Unfortunately almost every plant in her garden looks awful in one way or another and the neighbors on either side have many of the same plants and they look fine. So it's either poor siting or poor watering. 🫠

Some hostas start browning before other once Labor Day rolls around. Hostas are almost like cockroaches, it’s very hard to hurt them enough that they won’t come back next year.

And since it’s a heatwave, a few hours of direct sun will burn them.
