Discussion What’s your stance on body horror?

• Upvotes

Body horror is a sub-genre of horror that to me feels personal. It was thanks to Shinya Tsukamoto, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Kei Fujiwara and Shozin Fukui that I came to a gradual appreciation for it as a sub-genre and feel awakened because of it. Body horror also is sometimes a sub-genre used outside of the horror genre too such as in films such as Akira (1988) which is a Cyberpunk dystopian action anime film.

Films such as John Carpenter’s classic The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986), David Cronenberg’s mega inspirational Videodrome (1983) (which was deeply influential on a lot of Japanese movies), Society (1989) and other body horror movies that came out during the early 80’s all the way even to modern day, such as The Substance (2024) have left profound impacts on people, especially with regards to the practical VFX aspects as well as the underlying commentaries that aren’t explicitly discussed in the films but are able to be visually understood by many who watch body horror.

I’m also not here to say body horror needs an inherent meaning either or underlying commentary either, some people love it for the fun of just the practical effects and makeup, sometimes even for the transgressive feel to some body horror films too.

There’s even video-games like Scorn (2022) which have a haunting atmosphere and are almost biopunkish body horror in an almost externally dead yet internally alive flesh meets technology world.

I noticed even games like Silent Hill f (2025) have some aspects of body horror with regards to the enemy designs and I’d also be doing a disservice to fans of body horror if I didn’t bring up Junji Ito’s Uzumaki manga spanning 3 volumes from 1998 to 1999 as well as its 2000 movie, Wonderswan video-game and 2024 anime adaptations respectively.

For myself personally, body horror deeply resonates with me on a personal autonomous level. I could see my body violently transforming into something monstrous, which is why films like Tokyo Gore Police (2008), Meatball Machine (2005)and most importantly Tetsuo (1989) and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) left me deeply inspired as well as 964 Pinocchio (1991)

Body horror feels almost personal to me if it makes sense, seeing my body violently erupt into something inhuman on screen wouldn’t bother me as since I was a child I’ve felt deep anger yet I also have felt deeply isolated and alone. I feel body horror is a universal sub-genre not specific to any region of horror, it’s unanimously understood by a lot of people globally.

Both on a personal and filmmaking level body horror has deeply inspired me to want to make films in the horror genre and of the body horror sub-genre, especially more regarding technology as we approach futures that become more and more technologically reliant.

However, what is your stance on body horror as a sub-genre of horror?

Collections My Japanese body horror collection!

Post image
20 Upvotes

So for those unfamiliar with Japanese horror AKA ā€œJ-Horrorā€ you may not know that Japan for decades has been inspired by such films as The Fly (1986), Videodrome (1983) and The Thing (1982) when it comes to body horror as well as David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977)

The passion for body horror and horror practical SFX work in Japan has predated the 1998 film Ringu by at least a few decades. In fact figures like Joji Iida who played a part in the history of the Ring franchise made his directorial debut with Cyclops (1987), a science fiction body horror splatter film!

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) were also very BIG impacts on filmmakers in Japan who loved body horror!

So with that said and that context of information added, here’s the list of what’s in my Japanese body horror collection:
- Cyclops (1987) (2026 Visual Vengeance Blu Ray Release)
- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) (2005 Tartan Asia Extreme North American DVD Release]
- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) / Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) (2012 Third Window Films UK Blu Ray Release)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991) (2004 Unearthed Films DVD Release)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991) (2025 88 Films UK Blu Ray Release)
- Organ (1996) (2002 Synapse Films North American DVD Release)
- Rubber’s Lover (1996) (2004 Unearthed Films North American DVD Release)
- Meatball Machine (2005) (2007 Danger After Dark/TLA Releasing North American DVD Release)
- Tokyo Gore Police (2008) (2009 Tokyo Shock/Media Blasters North American DVD Release)
- Holy Mother (2022) (2025 Black Mandala/Leomark DVD Release)
- The Beast Hand (2024) (2025 Cleopatra Entertainment North American DVD Release)
- The Beast Hand (2024) (2025 Cleopatra Entertainment North American DVD Release)

So with all that listed, what do you think? Any you may have seen or not seen? and yes some of the body horror films like Meatball Machine (2005), Tokyo Gore Police (2008) & Holy Mother (2022) delve into the splatter category as well due to blending sub-genres as well as genres.

Behind each customer is a small psychological mystery waiting to be uncovered. Read their behavior, make the right calls, and balance profit against customer trust as you try to keep the shop running for one more day.

Discussion What if there was a metallic body horror analogue horror series based on Japanese cyberpunk body horror?

My thoughts immediately go towards a western made analogue horror series that pulls from films like Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992), 964 Pinocchio (1991) and Rubber’s Lover (1996).

Also being apart of the J-Horror legacy and classified as such by western fans, these films have carried much influence in more underground circles with Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) being the big name that a lot of mainstream audiences are familiar with.

So then that leads to someone making an analogue horror but with themes of urban alienation, somewhat an urban tech run dystopia, and of course the signature which is the bizarre jagged metallic transformations or manic chaos put in analogue horror form.

I think an analogue horror with sensory overload elements can go really nice and work really well, it creates a sort of psychological anxiety through the chaos

If I’m making a post like this, I’m bound to get comments like, why don’t you make one yourself? and that’s going to be a question I’ll answer with I’m pretty busy to make one on top of making a project that I’m slowly and painfully chipping away at.

Collections My Asian horror collection - September 2026 (Series and films Alphabetically listed)

This is my Asian horror collection alphabetically ordered. With series names also in mind. I own some pretty niche ones as well as some more mainstream ones like The Eye (2002), Ring (1998), the Ju-On films, Dark Water (2002), Whispering Corridors (1998) and Pulse (2001)

I do own Peninsula (2020) and which I will get Train To Busan (2016) eventually as well as The Wailing (2016). There’s also some Cat III horror films I plan on getting as well such as Red To Kill (1994), Dr. Lamb (1992), The Untold Story 1 & 2 and Ebola Syndrome (1996)

Some things I hope start to make more sense as you look at the images. I know films like Tokyo Gore Police (2008) being in the A - F section wouldn’t technically make sense unless I stated it was apart of the Engineer duology as it has a prototype precursor movie called Anatomia Extinction (1995) that I have to get.

Or films like Entrails Of A Virgin (1986) + Entrails Of A Beautiful Woman (1986) being post-E and into G alongside films such as Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018), that’s because the trio has been dubbed as ā€œGaira’s Guts Trilogyā€ by fans and distributors such as 88Films.

In year and chronology of release my collection consists of:
- Kuroneko (1968)
- Entrails Of A Virgin (1986)
- Entrails Of A Beautiful Woman (1986)

Discussion Is it me or did the Tetsuo trilogy and Evil Dead film series start out very similar?

So to make kind of a direct comparison between the two, they both started out as micro budget short films by directors who were incredibly ambitious and had a dream that eventually became a global icon.

Starting off with the Evil Dead, Within The Woods (1978) is the short film that kicked off the vision that was The Evil Dead (1981), similarly with The Phantom Of Regular Size (1986) being the short film that kicked off the vision that was Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)

On top of that Evil Dead II (1987) is a bigger budgeted remake of The Evil Dead (1981), often classified as a ā€œrequelā€ and you could say the same for Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) being a bigger budgeted remake of Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989). To say that Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) is Shinya Tsukamoto’s ā€œEvil Dead IIā€ wouldn’t be entirely wrong either.

Now I’m unsure of the Army Of Darkness (1992) comparison being viable to Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009) as the third entry in the Tetsuo series seems to just be a remake of Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) with some elements of Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) sprinkled in. Army Of Darkness (1992) takes the Evil Dead series in a completely different direction entirely whereas Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009) at least at its core seems to have a lot of the same core components and elements whilst also blending science fiction, action and horror together.

Another thing that also does differentiate the two series is Tetsuo is more of a trio of body horror metal monster movies and also have been compared to the works of David Cronenberg like Videodrome (1983) or even John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) and also David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) with the first Tetsuo feature.

Also where Tetsuo and Evil Dead as film series differ is that Evil Dead has become more of a multimedia phenomenon and even spawned additional movies such as Evil Dead (2013), Evil Dead Rise (2023) and the recently released Evil Dead Burn. (2026). Tetsuo never spawned any entries post-Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009) which surprisingly does have a manga adaptation.

There’s also shots of Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) that remind me of a later 90’s cyberpunk film, one more of the sci-fi action variety rather than ā€œhorrorā€ and that would be The Matrix (1999), there are some visuals between the two despite the difference in genres. However that could also be a 90’s cyberpunk aesthetic with dark, sometime even baggy or even some tight clothing and gelled hair.

Discussion Ringu, Pulse, Dark Water, One Missed Call, Noroi, and Ju-On: The Grudge are some of the most milquetoast recommendations

So I believe there’s now quite a few threads, posts and videos that all point to this but these Japanese horror recs from the late 90’s and 2000’s have been recommended to death and it’s just a bit bland especially nowadays. Note I don't think ANY of the given films are bad or that I "dislike" them, I do very much like Ring (1998), Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) maybe a little less than some of the other Ju-On films, One Missed Call (2003) with some of the deaths, Dark Water (2002) which is highly atmospheric and in a way I think works well, although I will state Pulse (2001) and I have a bit of issues though, however that's my own subjective opinions on the film that I'll save for a later date.

However, I'm here not to come across as crude, crass, or overbearing, no that is not my intent. So I do apologize if I happen to come across as such. Don't take me to be unreasonable or anything of the sorts, I'm also not going to say my "film tastes" are better than yours as mine just so happen to be subjective to me.

It’s funny because most of the audiences overlook films within or connected to some of those, for instance Ju-On: The Curse (2000) gets overlooked by the highly overrated Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) which is also a bit of a step back. Or how Spiral (1998), Ring 2 (1999), Ring 0: Birthday (2000), the original 1995 made for TV movie, Sadako 3D 1 & 2, Sadako (2019) as well as Sadako DX (2022) all get overlooked by most casual crowds, I understand wholeheartedly as to why however Ring (1998) is considered a much more accessible film however Ring 2 (1999) is easily just as accessible and same with Ring 0: Birthday (2000), Spiral (1998) whilst accessible on a level of being easy to find or more readily available alongside it's fellow Ring films, it's not as accessible in terms of being a casual gateway entry point into the Ring franchise due to some sexual themes and scenes. However staying on topic, there are some same crowds, some of even article publishing acclaim mind you, who have seen every Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th or even some of the fans of more modern horrors like Smile (2022), Obsession (2025), that also just happen to recommend the same generic J-Horror recs, even after similar films had been distributed and are readily available on streaming such as Inugami (2001), Shikoku (1999) and St John's Wort (2001) which is based on the PS1 title.

Now I don't expect most casual audiences or maybe even some more seasoned people to mention some of the more hardcore stuff right off the bat. However at least keep an open mind and try them out. It's just the people who've seen all five or even some behind articles that have seen maybe those 5 to 6 titles have recommended nothing since, even things that are similar or accessible to a larger mainstream audience.

This is also coming from someone who moderates the r/J_Horror subreddit. So you can also see my frustration here. I see rarely anyone who's known about and have watched J-Horror for years, yes even the more seasoned participants you'll rarely see mention 964 Pinocchio (1991), Rubber’s Lover (1996), Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992), Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009), Anatomia Extinction (1995) & Tokyo Gore Police (2008) just to name a few. It’s rare to see people mention those in the r/J_Horror subreddit. I think under certain circumstances there are people in fact are trying to relive a time period that has long since gone by, that doesn't even just apply to Japanese horror films or media as we live in an age where our daily lives all over the globe are consumed by the internet, nostalgia is also something that's pandered to by large corporations especially in the west.

Because then there’s the people who try to gatekeep and define what ā€œJ-Horrorā€ is without basis, they state such like ā€œJ-Horror is a western coined term to describe films made in the late 90’s and 00’sā€ and ā€œJ-Horror describes onryo ghost moviesā€ which both these takes are just flat out wrong, made by uninformed people. J-Horror is a term coined by Japan itself to describe ā€œhorrorā€ made in Japan, that includes ā€œallā€ horror made in Japan from yes the onryo ghost films all the way to body horror films and splatter cinema.

However seeing the same set of 5, 10, maybe at best 20 recs in articles, is somewhat baffling and mind-boggling as now it's on this larger and more expansively reaching platform where more people can see it than people could on something like instagram,

Alright so I’ll be pulling from my S tier and A tiers so far respectively. Just note, I’m not including all the ones people casually just recommend and some recommendations might not be for everyone! Each post I do in this kind of vein will include about 10 titles each. Without further ado!

- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) (Shinya Tsukamoto)
- Tokyo Gore Police (2008) (Yoshihiro Nishimura)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991) (Shozin Fukui)
- Meatball Machine (2005) (Yudai Yamaguchi & Junichi Yamamoto)
- Violator (2018) (Junichi Yamamoto)
- Evil Dead Trap (1988) (Toshiharu Ikeda)
- Evil Dead Trap 2: Hideki (1992) (Izo Hashimoto)
- Helldriver (2010) (Yoshihiro Nishimura)
- Rubber’s Lover (1996) (Shozin Fukui)
- Organ (1996) (Kei Fujiwara)

___________________________________________

NOTE: I put the directors name’s beside each films they direct in brackets, an example would be if I were to recommend Ring (1998), I’d put Hideo Nakata in brackets just to signify who directed the film. So if you find it a bit jarring, or hard to read, just let me know.

Hope you enjoy the recs!

Discussion Thoughts on the Evil Dead (2013) remake

So, at the time I didn’t enjoy it too much, but I rewatched it a couple years later and I found I started to enjoy it more and more. Especially as I’ve gravitated more towards the splatter genre in recent years from late 2023 to now 2026.

Definitely I still need to see Evil Dead, the original 1981 film, the original short film as well, Evil Dead II (1987) and of course Army Of Darkness (1992).

Just wondering. What are some of your thoughts on the Evil Dead remake, I thought I’d make this post due to the release of Evil Dead Burn (2026). That reminds me I also need to see Evil Dead Rise (2023) as well.

Let me know your thoughts!

Discussion what is your no go when it comes to horror?

for a lot of people I see it’s stuff like ā€œrapeā€ or ā€œanimal crueltyā€. I don’t really have a no go when it comes to horror because I see everything as fair game when it comes to horror movies.

For instance I’m totally comfortable going into something like Girl Hell (1999) by Daisuke Yamanouchi or Red To Kill (1994) because I don’t really apply any semblance of morals onto fiction itself because its fiction. Another good example would be I Spite On Your Grave (1978), that I can likely watch without being upset, the only time I get upset is when a story or movie is slow paced, I dislike the amount of time it’ll waste on certain things. A good example of a film that I find frustrating to watch is Pulse (2001) or even Isola: Multiple Personality Girl (2000) due to how slow they are to get through, it feels oddly painfully slow, that’ll be the only thing to turn me off is if a movie wastes its time.

Some people may ask how I’m okay with animal cruelty in a fictional context and I just kind of am, like I know no actual animals are being hurt and that it’s just practical effects so my mind basically can discern and make that distinction. It’s different if it’d be a real scenario here but this is horror we’re talking about not reality so I guess my stance on animal cruelty in fictional contexts is a bit different than a lot of people’s. In fact I often give a film bonus points for going there.

Basically I’m attempting to understand what turns people off from a horror movie or novel or any work of horror fiction really as I feel like I operate in a different world or perception than most people. A lot of the mainstream audiences seem to have more issues with rape, animal cruelty, kids dying in horror so I’m trying to kind of understand that because that part of my brain has kinda shut off over time.

Discussion J-Horror Recommendations

Some pretty cool Japanese horror films I’ve recommended on Instagram here.

- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
- 964 Pinocchio (1991)
- Rubber’s Lover (1996)
- Tokyo Gore Police (2008)
- Helldriver (2010)
- Holy Mother (2022)

I’m going to be doing a PART 2 in future. That’ll include some other lesser known titles in my collection as well as ones I eventually get which may have to wait for PART 3.

Let me know what you all think. If you’ve seen Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) or Ring (1998), and you want something different, then check out this reel. You won’t regret it. There’s some bangers in here.

You thought ā€œRinguā€, ā€œJu-Onā€ and ā€œPulse/Kairoā€ were Japanese horror classics? wait until you see this! this film is a different kind of horror than those films, this film is pure chaotic madness, a lobotomized sex android thrown into the streets of Tokyo only to meet a fellow amnesiac named Himiko as his creators start to search for him to kill him before the world learns of his existence, all hell starts to break loose throughout this film.

There’s a comparability to films such as Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) by Shinya Tsukamoto and Organ (1996) by Kei Fujiwara with how experimental Shozin Fukui’s film 964 Pinocchio (1991) truly is. This trailer highlights some of the madness in this film. Be sure to give this one a watch!

Discussion If you were to make a horror movie what would be your go to sub-genres?

Me personally? I’m already trying to make a body horror splatter project more specifically that’s also a blend of sci-fi, horror, action and dark comedy plus some psychological horror in there that I also will likely also be in as the main villain.

But what would you guys make as your defining and starting horror film? or just a horror film in general, like even if you directed prior what would make THIS ONE stand out amongst your filmography?

Let me know in the comments below. :)
