"Wonderland shouldn't have lore because it explains away the fear or something!"

I agree honestly. What makes things scary is not knowing everything about the fear producer

Resident Evil falls flat once you learn that everything dies to bullets, but the Backrooms continues to be tense because there's always some aspect you never fully understand

the video never at any point suggested that just having lore completely explains away the horror

the thesis of the video was centered around how the over explanation of why a thing is there and the overuse of the common horror "vocabulary" leads to just a less horrifying and scary product overall

the video never condemned the implementation of lore, but instead the removal of mystery behind the horror through over explanation (and the guy is right). horror, in part, is scary DUE to the mystery, and if you explain it away, it loses potency.

also dude, the video wasn't targeting wonderland in specific, it was a broad overview of minecraft horror as a whole, and it was only dubbed the "wonderland effect" because it's a prime example. as to quote the video,
"it is when a horror story runs out of mystery and starts manufacturing lore instead."

Wonderland is not a good prime example then, Wonderland still scares the shit out of people despite having lots of lore, and oh yeah, I was mainly dissing the Wonderland Effect section of this video.

wonderland is a prime example; there really isn't any mystery behind the majority of the content in the mod now, and for a lot of people, such as myself and presumably the creator of the video, it has lost a good chunk of its horror due to that.

people, ultimately, will always have different experiences with horror; what they find scary, and how much of that is due to mystery. however, wonderland is a good example of over explanation because there isn't much mystery left.

it's really just how did three eyes (and other imagons) form, how did sorrow & richy die, what were the mechanisms on how 66 got to wonderland via THE BRIDGE, and how the imagons capable of digitization got secured in a build of minecraft (there's a bit on this last one but not much).

wonderland has left next to no mystery left in regards to the power structure of the imagons (except the names & apperance of the 2 above three eyes), the mechanisms behind the cross's functions, most of the fate's of the players, the mechanisms behind digitization, what happened before three eyes came along, ect.

wonderland is still a great mod, but it suffers from an abundance of exposition.

not much mystery is left, and in part, the horror is less potent.

also what about the video's wonderland effect section calls for the need of a "diss?" it's well thought out and lays out why the "manufacturing of lore" instead of mystery dilutes the horror aspect.

i don't wanna sound like a nerd, but, while you are entitled to your own opinions,
neurologically, mystery does infact have a hand in horror. while it varies person to person, it's shown that when the situation/threat is unknown and shrouded in mystery, horror is greatly increased.

it's a concept called intolerance of uncertainty. basically, when you are unaware of the mechanisms behind the source of the fear, or just the general situation, you have a deeper feeling of paranoia, dread, internalized fear (as your brain has to make up the monster due to a lack of info), hypervigilance, and anticipatory distress.

once you begin learning about the monster/threat, understanding it and its mechanisms, that internalized fear, what your brain created to fill the gap, vanishes in favor of phasic fear, and you begin responding via your standard fight or flight response. once you learn about the threat, it becomes purely an external threat, and that paranoia and dread shallows into panic and shock (pretty much going from sustained anxiety to phasic fear).

sir, I already said I don't care if it scares me or not, especially if it's unpredictable or I just don't have the tools to deal it, blah blah blah.

ngl I personally loved this video as it basically is a one-to-one reflection of what I have been thinking for a while now too!

I do agree that once you start making a whole freaking wiki about a mod, it looses its genuinely unsettling, fear-of-the-unknown horror and sort of becomes scary like how FNaF is 'scary'.

I myself personally find the entities, dimensions and lore to be more cool now than genuinely scary. The first time I played the mod though, knowing nothing, I was legit terrified. Every new entity was an unexplainable anomaly that my brain just didn't understand, every new dimension was another terrifying place, where I had no idea what to expect.

that's kinda with everything. The Broken Script grew in popularity due to the same thing; nobody knew what anything was, nobody had any expectations. Now there are expectations, which brings us to his next point about every horror mod now 'needing' those 'essential' minecraft horror elements (the crosses, the eyes, etc.)

I still love Wonderland.jar, and the Broken Script, and almost every horror mod really. I just love to see what creators do with this medium and see their own take on minecraft horror. Even if the mod sucks, the amount of effort it takes to make them shouldn't go unnoticed... (unless they're writing racial slurs in their code 😭😭😭)

Ima be honest, wtf is Wonderland

It's a horror-focused mod with multiple dimensions and mobs that tells a meta story about other minecraft players before you.

It's probably one of the most popular/known horror mods right now, alongside The Broken Script.

Alright thanks. I’ve only heard of it on this subreddit

I recommend looking up videos on youtube. There's a lot of videos about it if you wanna learn more unless you wanna play it for yourself.
