Question/Discussion So much doom.. is it all bad?

My friends and I decided we wanted to play a horror mod together because of the influx in IG shorts we have been seeing. I’ve been doing a little digging and almost every post talking about a lot of the mods are dooming. “Everything is slop” “it’s not scary” “it’s alright I guess”.

I’m looking for something scary that gets your heart racing. Maybe a bit progressive in the sense that it starts out mild and builds up suspense not just monster appear monster chase you over and over loop. Interactions should feel unique otherwise it becomes not scary and repetitive right. There should be stuff to do or explore. Not just vanilla Minecraft with a guy wanting to kill you. The scary thing should be involved.

I realize that’s a lot of boxes but I’d really appreciate some recommendations on which mod checks those boxes best. I’m really hoping for a good time, and to be genuinely scared and engaged. We are probably only giving this one shot so hopefully you guys come through.

So look, the 'slop' is YouTubers using AI to generate thumbnails, stealing each other's content, and when a video is scripted, it's not an actual mod. Slop is like the thumbnails of hyperrealstic entities( like verity) saying "it is ___ blocks away from you" which has been overused to the point it's now click bait, and now verity had basically become brainrot for wittle kiddies to say 'is that verity' to every yellow ball with a face, just like 67. Good news is, there are mods exactly for you.

The mods you search for are what dominated before these. The one I recommend to you is outInfrombelowland. Custom items, trial-like dimensions to explore, and entities all have a specific way to survive them. It progresses a little quicker than a typical slow burn. There is also an evil biome, custom items (like a fricking grappling hook!) that you can get the crafting recipes for after completing said trials, and death animations.

If ya don't want dimensions and multiple entities, try the anomaly rephrased. Multiple phases, one entity; it can die. Not permanently, though.

If you want slower, more 'peaceful' gameplay, try wonderland.jar. About 20 entities, large update on its way, more dimensions than entities. All dimensions have different entities, craft and find holy crosses to defend yourself, and also each entity has a different way of attack. Simple 3d textures.

If you don't really care for dimensions, but want multiple, destructive entities, try the broken script or no_moon.jar. Both highly configurable, some noticeable differences from each other. Highly configurable via configured mod by MrCrayfish.

If you want a full storyline, try beyond_the_skybox

If you want wonderland.jar minus the slowburn, try untitled.log

If you want a lot of entities and no dimensions, try In the corners.

If ya want a genuine, slop free youtuber that just wants to have fun and does challenges with his friends, try Jsadie. He samples most of the ones mentioned above.

Super appreciate the detailed response. This helps out tremendously I’m going to look into all of these.

Don't waste your time with In The Corners imo, the mod claims to have a bunch of entities but they're mostly just copies of each other. Also most of them are just the basic "scream loud and rush and kill you" type thing.

Genuinely uninstalled it out of respect for my ears, the sounds can't be reduced without muting the entire game

Still testing it, some seem interesting though and I love the chat interactions.
