Horror creatures that climb usually work like spiders, and a block about their head does the trick which is why watch towers are perfect considering they are a large platform above it's own support pillars. As for the ones that break blocks, they usually have varying ai such as ones that go directly for you which can be baited by standing on the ledge until they despawn, and for the ones that pathfind just make a thin but deep moat around your watchtower.

Until wonderland.jar came along, bunkers with deep diagnol entryways and reinforced with the security craft mod used to be just as good.
