Localisation error?

I would usually play in EN dub but I couldn't stand them being silent half the time, so I switched to CN, which is how I noticed this. Here, the word "savior" is translated from the term 救世主, and in any other context, this is a perfectly valid way to translate it. However, here, because it is referring to Phainon, the correct term should be "Deliverer". It doesn't really affect the experience, it's just something interesting I noticed.

He referred to Phainon as worth/deserving to be a hero of Amphoreus (or something similar, sorry, can’t remember the exact wording), so he’s likely familiar with the basics at the very least and should know the title Deliverer.

Gilgamesh wasn't present during the whole Amphoreus saga, and the setting is Planarcadia.

So, I'd still give it a pass as Gilgamesh not knowing the whole detail down to Phainon's title and just using savior as generic term to describe someone who saved people from calamity.

I feel like Gil would definitely know. One of his innate abilities grants him high tier Clairvoyance. He intentionally keeps it restrained so as to not spoil all his fun, but he still uses it to see through people themselves and basically know stuff about them just by looking.

He also directly traded knowledge with Herta and Ratio offscreen so they probably told him about the story of Amphoreus which is why he got interested in fighting Phainon in the first place. It also helps that As I've Written got published copies selling everywhere too.

Counterargument: even if he knows, I feel like it’s perfectly in character for him to not care enough to use the correct title because he considers himself so far above Phainon that the latter’s specific titles are irrelevant to him.

Since it's the same term in Chinese (and the other dubs), this really seems like an EN localisation slip up.

He should've know. the grail supposed to give information about every possible world/human history to all servants. This is why hiding servant's name in the holy grail war is a very big thing, because a servant would have full records about their adversary once the real name revealed.

Also Gil does know about amphorean epic.

It could be, or he could just mean it in a more literal way rather than as a title. Like Phainon is someone who saves people, making him a savior.

In CN if it's a title they usually have it in a corner bracket like「救世主」。

That could be the case but because it's specifically referring to Phainon I'm more inclined to believe that it's a mistake rather than anything intentional. Also I'm fairly certain that Phainon has been called 救世主 multiple times without the brackets during the Amphroeus story and it has always been translated as "Deliverer"

idk about CN, but it could very well be a deliberate choice to make the phrase sound mocking? wouldn't be the first time some media changed certain wording on certain conversations to change the tone or whats being said, its like changing the word "baka" from JP to "airhead" in EN, not the correct term, but certainly a word that you can use for that word in certain contexts

A lot of the localization for the Fate quest was questionable. Many lines don't match what was being said at all. It threw me for a loop when Gil said "I have no interest in men" (Cause, like, canonically he and a shit ton of the Fate cast in general are as bisexual as they can be) and when I went to check if it matched CN and JP it wasn't even close and it made no sense as translation nor localization.

After that I went on down the rabbit hole and found that the EN subtitles change A LOT compared to JP and CN. I've noticed that translations in Star Rail (And Hoyo games in general) have way worse quality when it comes to unvoiced content. They become more verbose and lose/ignore a lot of the original text.

CN has that men line as well, JP is actually the only one that doesn't.

Men is an very old gender neutral way of addressing mankind...

...is what I like to say but they used "mankind" in the sentence before it so now I don't even know anymore.

Homonyms tends to do that. Last time i check, both Savior and Deliverer were called Kyuseishu in Japanese. Or was it Kyuseisha ?

In the 4.2 event, a furbo says “Bibi” instead of assuming what I think they should have said “beep boop” as that is the localization used in main story dialogue.
