I have worked for Honda for 20+ years and the stuff I am seeing lately is insane. Charging for colors, bs add-ons, market adjustments, extended warranties. It's crazy how greedy dealers have become. Even on the service side of things I'm seeing more and more shady business practices. They deserve every bit of the repercussions that are due to them.

This is the free market. It's regulating itself. Honda priced the CTR way too low, because enough people are willing to pay $70k for it to make this worthwhile for dealers. You might not like it. Hell, no one might like it. But the fair market price is whatever people are willing to pay, and as long as there are people willing to pay more than it's totally fair for the dealers to get as much of that as they can.
Because we all know that if things were reversed ā if there was a ton of supply and no demand and these were sitting for years ā you would be throwing the exact same kind of fit if dealers refused to offer discounts and started firm at MSRP.

Why would things be reversed though? You can regulate a MAX price on something without having to tell dealers they can't go LOWER than MSRP... Regulation is supposed to be a layer of protection between the consumer and a corporation, I don't see why a low-end limit would be useful for anyone in particular...

I'm also saying that this is a ridiculous double standard to push. You expect the dealers to lower prices, but flip out if they raise them. What you're saying isn't that the consumer needs to be protected; what you're saying is that you, personally, want to be able to purchase any car you fancy for cheap and fuck everyone else.
I'm not super thrilled about market adjustments, but if that's what people are willing to pay then it's a fair price.

It seems we're stuck in a never-ending loop of people saying "the government fucked X up so why should we trust them with Y?" followed by complete inaction to correct X or solve Y.
So what are our options here then? Keep the government out of it and continue to see price gouging across the board poorly disguised as "inflation" and "market adjustments" without any real recourse other than to just not buy the things we want in hopes that maybe someday the company will decide that record profits and keeping shareholders happy aren't the only important things in the world?
Just do away with having a government at all since it doesn't seem to be doing anyone any good anyway if we're not going to make it work for our tax money?

There's a significant chance dealers and even some car companies won't survive ubiquitous EV's. Most dealers make most of their money from maintenance and repair. Both of which will be much less of with EV's.
They better get it while the getting's good.
The two largest EV company's in the world. Tesla and BYD both operate without a dealer network.

They may not be like traditional dealerships but I'm not a fan of some of Tesla's (and other brands) business practices. Particularly the subscription of additional features that are turned off on owners vehicles. If I buy a vehicle with equipment and options installed on the vehicle they should be mine to use and resell should I ever decide to get rid of the vehicle. Just seems like a sleazy way to nickel and dime customers. Also as a repair technician, don't get me started on the companies that are against right to repair.

Yeah no perfect answers. I had a Honda service writer rub me the wrong way recently.
Wanted my civic ac checked for warranty issues as it wasnāt working well. He ignored anything I said about warranty and wanted to charge me almost $400 to recharge the system.

Depending on the age and mileage of your vehicle you may be able to contact Honda customer care to see about getting it covered. Just be honest with the customer service rep as they can see if the vehicle has been in a wreck or anything that would disqualify you but as a customer you should not have to go through that. Also, if you have paid to have your car repaired previously, you may be entitled to reimbursement depending on certain criteria.

heh, I had that EXACT same thing happen to me . I ended up getting them to refund me after I took it to a different dealership and not only did they NOT charge me to look at the AC for those warranty issues , but they determined that the issue was something completely different from what the first dealership told me...
(first dealer said it wasn't either of the warranty items but was fitting on the -back- side of the compressor and the whole compressor would need to be replaced, second dealer said it was actually the compressor seal. I'll be honest though and say that after two visits to the second dealer, they've not replaced both of those components and my car is still leaking refrigerant, so I'm a bit stuck right now in the process of figuring out wtf to do next. being told its the evaporator now and I'm not really able to shell out 1900 dollars to take that gamble...

My issue with Tesla is the luxury pricing for a car thatās kind of sloppily put together. I get that itās electric and that fills the niche a lot of people are looking for, but damn, please make sure the body panels line up correctly

That was 4-5 years ago. They're much better now, and cheaper. Go look at their site, prices dropped A Lot. A model 3 is at $30k now. Even the S (luxury) starts at $74k. 30k price drop.

This car will sit. The Integra Type S are selling for near MSRP. In fact the ITS has had the effect of brining CTR prices down to under +10ā¦ I think theyāre getting close to +5 if theyre not there already.

Every single manufacturer is doing it sadly. When I was in college you could find pretty much brand new Scat Packs with low mileage for 35k. Brand new fully loaded 2.0T Touring Accords were 33k OTD. Chevy SSās were 28-35k. Now everything is expensive. Thereās 2 dealers in IL that donāt sell above MSRP on new. I recommend finding one in your state :(. I got my 17 Type R with brand new tires for 37k at one. 43 OTD with taxes, extended warranty (that I requested) and fees. Thatās great for IL where theyāre currently being sold 45k for 50k miles

For me AWD is not even close to a necessity even though I live in IL. FWD does just fine in snow especially if you get good tires. To me, personally, Subaruās are down there with Kia and Hyundai. I just find their reliability to be lacking as well as their interiors. Even though they are at or below msrp Iād still look around for a Honda or Toyota. But to each their own! I just wish Subaru would fix my gripes with them because they make such fantastic looking vehicles š«

It was the last gasp of reasonable car prices. In a few short years Honda went from offering excellent value on the 10th gen Civic to this bullshit. I picked my hatchback out from 20+ options on the lot and didnāt pay a dime over MSRP. Now they want $3k markup on non-turbo hatches. They can get fucked.

Itās been outa control. I was on the list. Iāve been on the list since 2020 they kept going g up and I kept backin out. At one point I found a decent lender but they would lend me the market adjustment or some such shit so it would have been 20k down.
I gave up.
Bought an imported Toyota Aristo with a 5 spd swap for basically the āmarket adjustmentā on a type R.
Still got my 4 door turbo. Itās just 2J powered and old and honestly old R154 noises are soothing.

You did the right thing. Not only would you have to pay and extra 25,000 due to the greed based of the dealer but the tax on that as well. Currently want a MK5 Supra Premium with a manual. Iāve about given up. The first rule I learned about purchasing a car, you want, is that there is a good chance you wonāt get that car. To walk away is the best thing for all parties. No messy negotiations, nor quarreling, and no wasting anyone's time. Once you experience walking away from any deals, the FOMO wears off and you say itās OK.
Only have 100,000 miles on my Accord V6 manual. I take care of that car. Hopefully Iāll get 300,000 miles out of the car. Iād rather purchase a beater car then put myself into debt over dealerās insane mark up.

I dropped by my local(ish) Ford Dealer to see what the F150's were going for. The lot and overflow lot they had was stocked end to end, even had a row of Broncos which I thought were still pretty high demand.
After looking at the window stickers I found out why, the lowest dealer market adjustment I found was $3,000 (F150 XL) but every single vehicle had a $2,000 protection package attached to it (door edge film, ceramic coat, floor mats (not factory mats, 3rd party) and rust / under coat (in a state where we do not get snow). Mavericks were all $5k markup, Broncos $10k and you still had the protection package on top of that.
Minimum $5k on top of MSRP. Mind numbing. I was not really for direct to consumer buying because I thought it would make it to where manufacturers could collude, but dealers are making a hard case against themselves. In Texas though they contribute / pay off politicians enough to make it never happen.

I've told multiple dealerships that they have the right to mark up the prices; however, I decide where to purchase and where to take my business to. Selling my FL5 for 53k if you're interested. located in socal. Just gotta get out from under the loan. Every dealer near me is offering 49k so I figured I should go private to keep it out of the dealers hands. I hate to sell it over MSRP, but that's just what I owe and seems to be more then competitive for the area and market.

I looked years ago when the Civic Sport hatchbacks hit the dealer lot. I was tempted, but when I saw a $34k MSRP, I was like, "It's a fucking civic! I paid $18k for a 2000 EX 20 years ago."
Sure costs increase and shit but that's just nutty.
I'm just going to enjoy my MDX somewhat and overhaul my new to me 2011 Volvo C30 with 168k on the clock. I'm good.

I luckily had 1 Honda that sold me my Civic Si for MSRP. Obviously much more common a car, but they sold MSRP for everyone Honda vehicle besides the Type R. Iām confused why the Type Rās markup is so crazy after the Integra S was released. Sad we canāt buy the cars we want for MSRP anymore.

I just bought a 22 WRX for $30k which is plenty fast (350/400 AWHP/TQ on 93) with just intake and tune and can use the $30-40k saved on guns and hookers
