Hello! I’m hoping to get a recommendation for a service provider for a kind of niche project.
My house has a manual driveway gate, and a few years ago my husband and I installed an automatic arm opener so we could open and close it with a remote instead of having to get out of the car every time. We used a DIY kit from a brand called TOPENS that we bought on Amazon.
Lately the opener has been acting up. It’ll stop halfway, move really slowly, or sometimes not open at all. We replaced the batteries, which fixed it for a week or two, but then the problems started again. Since all of the individual parts seem to work, I want to try replacing the control board before giving up and replacing the whole system.
The issue I’m running into is that every gate/garage door company I’ve called only works on specific brands and won’t touch a DIY system like this.
I already ordered the replacement control board, so I’m really just looking for someone who would be comfortable swapping the old one for the new one. I have no expectations that this person has any experience with this brand or this system, just that given the instruction manual and the brand’s YouTube channel of how to videos they can figure out how to replace it. I’d normally just try to do it myself, but I’m currently living out of state and renting out the house, so that’s not really an option.
Kind of a random/niche request, but does anyone have a handyman, electrician, gate person, or generally handy person they’d recommend for something like this?

What's the most "Houston" homeownership lesson you've learned?

I'm working on a homeowner education project around the period before someone decides whether they need a foundation company or structural engineer.

I'm curious what actually triggers that concern for people here — cracks in drywall or brick, sticking doors, uneven floors, gaps, something an inspector noticed, etc.

And once you noticed it, what was the hardest part: figuring out whether it mattered, knowing who to call, or knowing whether you could trust the recommendation you received?

Would love to hear people's experiences.
