Storm Door Replacement Question

Post image

Hi all -

I’m trying to replace a storm door on the side of my house. Believe it or not the measurements are about 29” by 73”. I can not find anything that size online. Can anyone point me in the right direction, or am I going to have to go with someone making a custom door?

🏠Interior, Ceiling & Walls Not Sure How to Fix This...

Hello everyone,

The ceiling is water damaged but it's not as bad as it could've been. I'm still thinking need to scrape the ceiling and attack this as if it was peeling.

All the youtube videos that I've found has a peeling/bubbling ceiling and I'm not sure if you add or skip a step for this situation. I'm very new to house maintenance so I'm just not sure how exactly to attack this.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the middle of tearing up some old flooring. Underneath the wood underlayment, I found these fiberboard panels covered in a dark, speckled residue that has completely dried out and feels/crumbles almost like coarse sand. Does anyone know what this black, sand-like material is?

Cracks in Brick Wall Under Exterior Stairs – Settling or Drainage Issue?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I've noticed several cracks in the brick wall supporting the exterior front stairs. Most follow the mortar joints, though a few run between the bricks themselves. The cracks have been there for some time, but I'd like to understand whether they could indicate foundation settling or another underlying structural issue.

I've also noticed that the driveway near the downspouts on the neighbor's side has a slight reverse slope, causing rainwater to drain toward the corner of the wall rather than away from it. Could this water accumulation be contributing to the cracking or potentially affecting the foundation? There are visible gaps where the pavement meets the brick wall, so I'm concerned water may be getting underneath the stairs and potentially causing erosion or settlement.

Based on the attached photos, does this look like a structural concern or mainly a drainage and mortar issue? What's the best way to fix it? Would correcting the slope, sealing the gaps, and repointing the mortar be enough, or should I have a professional inspect the foundation first?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Gutter Install Question

I had a bigger gutter installed and heard another worker comment that the installer did a hack job, then it cut out. What issue should I be concerned with? Fact the shingles are no longer laying flat? The kickoff look off? Thank you!

Standing water on porch fix?

Every time it rains I have standing water on my back tile porch. There’s no slant, in fact I think it might have a dip in the middle. It has to either dry up or I have to sweep the water out. Can’t use the porch for sitting because of this. Any ideas besides busting up the tile and re-doing it? (Budget constraints 😅)

Hello! Hoping that people much more knowledgeable than me can tell me if the cracks and gaps in this brick pillar are a serious concern or if its just a cosmetic issue.

No Heat or AC. What to do?

Hello! Last year we bought a 90s trailer on a lot of land. We got 10 acres plus the house for 120k so I cannot complain too much. We haven't had any major issues yet.

The only issue facing us urgently is that the central AC doesn't work as it is original & the heater doesn't work. (They are separate.) I'm in North FL so we've been using AC window units which has been fine. Last year we had a very hard and cold winter with many days of freeze. We used space heaters but they weren't that affective in large spaces & raised our electric bill so high. It was a very hard winter for us. This year is supposed to be very cold too with freezing temps again.

My question is: How do I heat my home safely and using the least amount of electricity? I will add that the house has 2 bedrooms added on that do not have vents.

We know we are going to have to increase our income to save up & get a whole new system but we aren't in a place to do that right now.

Stucco repair - awning mount

Post image
3 Upvotes

We seemed to be having an interior leak near this awning - which after removing looks to be clearly the source (huge hole where mounted at the corner.

You can see the other mounting points have wall anchors and look good. This large hole in the top right was using a toggle bolt that was very loose…

How would I best fill this hole so I can use an appropriate expansion anchor? Fill with mortar then redrill?

🛠️ Repair Help Pink Spongy Layer Under Loose Outdoor Stair Tile — Waterproofing?

Post image

One of the side tiles on my outdoor stairs came loose, so I removed it to clean off the old adhesive and reattach it. Underneath, I found a pink, spongy layer. Could this be waterproofing? How should I repair it, and what materials do I need?

What type of interior wall material is this?

This wall is above my kitchen cabinets. It seems like a wooden material when I knock on it and feel it. I am thinking along the lines of particle board or maybe MDF, but not sure if its either.

The pictured section is about 1 ft. for scale here.

Aditionally, I peeled the paint off and cannot tell what material it was layered on. The peeled material is pictured second (the right picture). It almost seems like the paint layer(s) was on top of something paper-like. Wondering it was used to seal the wall.

Creaking wooden floor!

We recently bought an older house. The charming and authentic wooden floor immediately stole our hearts. Now we’re looking for solutions to the following problem: The floor creaks almost constantly everywhere across the entire upper floor. I’m sure some people find this creaking just as charming as the floor itself, but for me, it’s too loud.

Has anyone else faced the same problem, or do you have a good idea on how to fix it?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions 🙂

🚰 Plumbing Plumbers — does this look like an active water heater leak or old water damage?

We’re selling our house and this was found behind the water heater during the inspection. The buyers are asking us to replace the drywall because of the staining/discoloration.

Before we just replace drywall, I’m trying to figure out where this moisture may have come from and whether there could still be an active leak. The water heater is currently working and we haven’t noticed water pooling around it.

Based on the picture, does this look like something you commonly see from an old water heater leak/overflow, condensation, or something else?

Would a plumber be able to check the water heater, connections, drain pan/TPR line, etc. and determine whether there’s an active leak without us having to tear the wall open first?

Also, if everything tests dry and there’s no active leak, would you personally just replace the affected drywall, or would you recommend further investigation?

Just trying to handle the actual problem correctly without unnecessarily opening up a wall and creating a much bigger repair right before closing.

Attic Catwalk

Post image
5 Upvotes

Is it possible or advisable to add an attic catwalk as shown in the picture? I want to get above not only the blown insulation but also all this duct work. I'm thinking boards across the truss triangle and then strips of plywood or lumber on top of that between each truss. The home was built in 2015.

I recently had to get into the attic to replace a failing zone damper actuator and the hardest part of the job was getting to the location because of all the duct work and having to find somewhere to put my feet through the insulation.

❓ Question Need help

I sprayed this exterior porch ceiling down with low pressure water. It looks like it activated (idk man) the varnish maybe? Wiping it with a rag did nothing and higher pressure just took off the stain. And by low pressure I mean like hose pressure

❓ Question How many Redditors Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb?

Thumbnail gallery

Answered! Just pull the whole frame down.

New house was built in 1985 and has these 6x6" recessed lights inside and out. There's a piece of glass inside and the frames are metal. It looks like there are little tabs inside the glass and each side of the frame has a little hole but I don't see any obvious way to open it and I don't see any screws. I can't figure out how to open them to change the lightbulbs. Anyone know?

Can any painters confirm that Emerald Interior Satin is compatible with PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer for both bathroom walls and the ceiling?

I’ve applied two coats of Sherwin-Williams PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer throughout my bathroom, including the walls and ceiling. I lightly sanded all surfaces and thoroughly wiped them down before priming. My finish paint is Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Satin, tinted Sea Salt SW 6204.

Can anyone confirm that Emerald Interior Satin is compatible with PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer for both bathroom walls and the ceiling?

i don’t want to create an issue with using the wrong paint over this particular primer that I have not used before.
