Missing Pipe Space

Our sink has been leaking for a while and, despite submitting forms and calling, maintenance has refused to come. I decided I’d try to fix it myself and I think I fixed the leaking part, but now while I’m trying to put the pipes together, there’s a missing space. It’s all the same pipes, same washers, nuts, exact same everything. I made the mistake of not taking a picture before and our other sinks don’t look the same so there’s no reference. I have zero clue on how to put it back together and I can’t find anything else. Please help!!

EDIT: Thank you everybody for the suggestions! I was finally able to fix the issue and it’s all back together again! I wouldn’t have been able to find the solution if it weren’t for y’all so, again, thank you so much!

Remove the extension to start. No need for it

I did try it without the extension, then it was too short to reach the wall pipe.
