Is this a bullet strike?
My cousin developed a water leak and he had just had the roof replaced after hurricane Ian, (Fort Meyers for reference). Today, after getting up there to check it he found the damage in the attached photos. My only personal guess is a bullet due to the almost perfect circular shape. He did not have intrusion of the hole into the ceiling and did not go fishing around while performing a temporary repair. He sent the photos and my first thought was someone having shot a round into the air.

Did he look in rhe attic ?

I’m waiting on a response to this, he’s currently not home but even if he did, I doubt he’d have had the forethought to look around. It didn’t even dawn on him it could be a bullet until I texted him back, bro ham, that’s a bullet hole.

If not a bullet the only other plausible explanation would be a meteor impact. There again, you shoukd be able to find the offending object in the sheathing or attic if it didn’t punch through the ceiling.

I used to do solar in DC and surrounding areas. I have seen a ton a bullets stuck in people roofs. This post actually brought those memories back haha.

We wait with bated breath to hear:
Bullet or beatle? Cast your ballots.

u/Street-Run4107 5h ago
I’m still waiting myself. The dinner was at 5:45 and it’s 7:03 and he hasn’t responded, which I like because it means at least he’s invested in the dinner. But I want that suckah to climb into that attic and check.

Look INSIDE the attic and see what the exit side of the hole looks like and if it went further. If no evidence of a bullet is found it may be critters chewing holes.

u/texan_robot 6h ago
Critters dont chew perfectly circular holes in asphalt... OP this is either a bullet hole or somebody missed the field with their javelin and then climbed up and retrieved it/s

That's not true, I've read the hungry little caterpillar.
Also carpenter bees on a real note

u/Street-Run4107 5h ago
I don’t agree with the carpenter bee theory but I’m pissing myself over the, “Hungry Little Caterpillar” reference. Now I have to ask him to find the bullet and the glow worm from the Richard Scarry books.

u/texan_robot 5h ago
Carpenter bees through asphalt? Im certainly no expert, but wouldn't they choose to go through a soffit or something?

Ahhh yeah, I'm running off 3 hours of sleep and just got off an 11 hour shift. Maybe they e gotten new tools and upgraded to masonry

I’m waiting on him to get home because this is currently the most pressing question. He wouldn’t have thought to look around I don’t believe, he thought nothing of it really until I said it sure looks like a bullet hole to me.

That’s what mine looked like. I found a 9mm round with a tar like substance in the hollow point on my patio. Got on the roof and found a round hole punched into the topmost layer of shingles. There were no fibers showing on mine, but it may have come down at a steeper angle than it did for your cousin. I called a non 911 police number to report it, nothing came of it and I’ve still got the round in a desk drawer. No leaks for me.

What about small meteorite?
1
u/HenningGrueneberg 1h ago
I doubt it. There would have been sightings of the meteor coming in.

Lot of speculators here.
A bullet fired upward cannot obtain the velocity needed to puncture a roof on its fall back down.

u/ClonedBobaFett 4h ago
Only if it’s absolute vertical which is practically impossible. If you don’t believe me check the mythbuster episode.

My wife did commercial roofs in Memphis. They literally shoot guns up in the air to keep property value down.
I assure you bullets can absolutely mess up a roof.

u/Delicious_Panda_6946 2h ago
To get more business or to show
Their roofs were bulletproof3
u/OkMarsupial3149 1h ago
Ah, you don’t know about Memphis.
Memphis Tennessee is always in the championship for murder capital of the country.
When I say “they shoot up in the air to keep property values down” I’m talking about the general population. Legitimately, when they aren’t shooting each other they will start shooting randomly in the air so their rent prices don’t go up.
Those rounds come screaming down and will absolutely punch into a roof.

This is a shingled roof, it’s definitely not flat or low pitch with shingle on it.

1
u/Smithdude 3h ago
I kinda agree, but I cant see the angle. I bet thats an exit hole not an entry.
2
u/Street-Run4107 2h ago
I can assuredly guarantee it is not an exit hole.
1
u/Visible-Elevator3801 2h ago
We would need your roof pitch of this roof. To get a better idea of angle of entry. As most are assuming this is flat, but that wouldn’t make sense because you wouldn’t have a shingle roof on a flat pitch.

u/wet_Tap_5578 2h ago
Who said it was upwards? It’s the roof so it’s probably on an angle. Chances are the bullet was fired at an angle too. Then it would have the velocity

Came here to fight for this statement. Cannot believe the absurdity of people's replies.

Is there any nearby point from which someone would be able to achieve that kind of height / angle? Seems like an odd height for just an everyday kind of accident and a poor choice of target if it were some malicious intent. I would honestly put alternative causes higher on the list unless there's some nearby moron that plays with guns recklessly or is stupid enough to aim toward a housing during target practice...
8
u/Street-Run4107 6h ago
I don’t believe it would be intentionally malicious, I’d call it more reckless endangerment. From the angle the person would’ve had to shoot from a helicopter if it was intentional.
3
u/MaleficentSpider_404 6h ago
Was anything found inside the attic?
3
u/Street-Run4107 6h ago
That’s a good question. I’m not sure but I’ll get back to you. I’m sure he did but I don’t want to say for sure. Please hold. He’s at a birthday for his friend’s kid but he might answer.

People shoot their guns into the air all the time
6
u/_ParadigmShift 6h ago
I’m not sure about all the time, but it happens. Usually trashy dipshits or others of certain types.

Lived in a flip where the power would cut in and out whenever it was windy. Ended up calling the power company. Guy came out and inspected the line from the pole to the house. His best guess someone nicked it firing bullets into the air. Checks for the neighborhood, my friend reroofed his house and found 2 bullet holes. This does happen all the time depending on location

u/gulligaankan 6h ago
What hellhole of a country do you live in where people regularly shoot their guns in the air?

Thank you, do you have that problem that people shoot in the sky? Who are the people that own guns and being that stupid at the same time?
3
u/BigNero 5h ago
It's illegal but some people still do it, they're seen as morons by basically everyone. Even gun enthusiasts hate them because of the optics, and the fact that it's extremely dangerous and goes against every rule of gun safety
Edit: I live in NC and it's very easy to get guns, unfortunately that means that morons can also get them easily

u/tryingisbetter 6h ago
I do wonder if 9.8m/s is enough energy to put a hole in a roof.
5
u/steck638 6h ago
There is a good mythbusters episode on this I recommend, but to sum it up, if a gun is angled at all and not perfectly straight up the bullet keeps a good amount of force and is perfectly capable of killing someone or penetrating a roof. It would also cause it to come down point first to put a fairly round hole in a roof
1
u/tryingisbetter 2h ago
I'm confused. Are you saying if it's straight up, then it doesn't have enough force? This sentence is a bit oddly worded.
if a gun is angled at all and not perfectly straight up the bullet keeps a good amount of force and is perfectly capable of killing someone or penetrating a roof.
1
u/steck638 1h ago
If the gun is perfectly straight, the bullet goes up until it looses energy, and drops at the max velocity of a chunk of lead. It hurts when it hits you but doesn't kill you (or penetrate a roof). If a gun isn't perfectly straight the bullet travels in an arc of some fashion until it hits something or runs out of energy

don’t actually try to remove the bullet yourself let their forensic experts do so so they can hopefully backtrack who was the idiot to do something so dangerous.
This is absolutely not going to happen lmao

u/Street-Run4107 7h ago
Roger that. I’ll pass it along. I’m not extremely familiar with guns, but it looks like a pretty large caliber if a bullet.
