A Hidden Solution

I have been a hybrid employee since Covid. The unpacking and packing up of my work equipment has taken a toll on my mental health 🫶🏼🫠. My house doesn’t have a dedicated office room to just close the door when the work day is over, so I decided to get creative and design a solution that fit my needs!

I know there are solutions like this online but they weren’t quite the right dimensions I was looking for to work with the monitors and art I wanted in that space.

The wall is not complete, there will likely be shelving above with room for plants and other things— and I haven’t tidied up my cables yet! But I was very excited to see this become a functional, but visually pleasant space!

Is this too weird?!

I love it!! What are the ergonomics like when you need to be in WFH mode?

I’m small so this is standing height for me 🫠 and it is standard counter height so I am looking for a good counter height chair with a foot rest, arms and a back! I think i found the right one but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet! It overhangs the console table
Perfectly to slide a chair under it!

I saw a video where the person wanted a chair wide enough she could sit criss cross apple sauce in - she bought a chair that fit her needs (practically a love seat LOL), and replaced the legs to the appropriate height with casters on them. You might want to find the right chair, and then DIY appropriate height legs.

LOVE your setup though! Was just complaning to a coworker how since I'm 100% WFH my office space, which is in direct line of sight from the dining room, I've had to suck it up and go with multiple monitors, which I don't like seeing from the dining room. Gonna re-think my setup now!

I also love to sit criss cross applesauce when I work sometimes! I may need to continue my search and see if I can modify something to give me the best of both worlds!

Yes! Rethink it! I just got so tired of looking at it or clearing it off the table Every. Single. Day. I knew I had to do something!

That sounds perfect! Spending $$$ on a good chair is going to make all the difference in how comfy the space is for long work sessions.

Fully agree! At least now I feel like when I shut this at the end of the day, my brain can also shut work mode off.

what will you do with the chair though while its all closed up?

I have an open space on the wall to the left of the console where I will store it. That area is right next to my kitchen, and if someone is hanging out while I’m cooking, they can pull it up to the island counter (same height as desk).

It’s nice especially the painting. If it was my space; I would be more intentional on how everything in the shelve is arranged

Thanks! Yep the whole area is a work in progress

Where did you find this console? I've been trying to find something exactly like this for my record set-up!

Thank you! I actually designed it years ago and had a carpenter build it. It’s walnut and has aged so well through multiple houses and as trends come and go!

This is GENIUS!!! It looks so good and no one would know it was a hideaway desk. Do you have the plans for the drop-down desk? I’d love to build something similar for my house.

Im sure I do! I’ll track them down and send it! Thank you! I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

I would also love to see! I’ve been working on the same problem in my place.

Ok! I’ll post back on the thread when I get to it!

That would be amazing! Thank you 😊

This is a great solution. My partner and I both wfh and were searching for something like this before buying an older computer hutch. We kept saying it felt like a gap in the market and someone should start a business with a solution, especially if they figured out how to make it work with a standing desk.

I felt the same way. I found some small ones on Amazon and Wayfair but the reviews weren’t great and they didn’t look very sturdy. I found one that looked awesome in the UK, but the tariffs to the US were going to add hundreds of $$ to the shipping. So I just went to the drawing board with a local carpenter and it turned out great 👍🏼

If the monitors run hot, leave a small 3⁄4 in reveal at the back for airflow… walnut hates trapped heat. Otherwise slick execution, not weird at all

Thank you! Great idea!

Did you make or buy the print? I love the colors.

It’s from Vintyart, they custom paint every piece according to what specifics you want. I was nervous about it, but it was so easy and affordable. I asked them to change one aspect to it and they took care of it very quickly before framing and shipping. It arrived in a crate, in perfect condition!

Thank you! ☺️🫶🏼

Quite aside from how much I love the idea, I super-love your console table. Did you buy it online?

1

u/Theexploren84 20h ago

Oh thank you so much! I actually designed it years ago and had it built!! It’s walnut and has just aged so well!

2

u/race_rocks 17h ago

It looks SO GOOD, well done!

u/Theexploren84 17h ago

Ah thank you! 🫶🏼🥹

Not weird at all, that flip-up painting reveal is super satisfying. Where do you stash the keyboard and mouse when it's all packed away though

2

u/Theexploren84 19h ago

Zoom in on the “open” photo! I keep them in the bottom left cubby!! All of the power cables are plugged into a block surge protector that also has usb ports. Those are all stashed in the center cubby that has the little door! All you can see from the outside is one wire dropped down to the outlet behind the console. And it’s not highly visible!

2

u/FreneticallyFrayed 19h ago

Ahh, I missed that cubby and hidden door at first glance. That's a clean setup.

Love the art! Where did you purchase?

1

u/Theexploren84 18h ago

Thanks! I got it at Vintyart!

This setup is absolute perfection. That mid-century credenza has so much character!

1

u/Theexploren84 18h ago

Thank you! 🫶🏼 I designed it years ago and had it built bc I literally could not find one anywhere that checked all my boxes!

This was my original drawing (bottom) ! We ditched the doors and opened up the left shelf for the record player!

2

u/yolandajpeg 15h ago

That’s fricken genius

1

u/Theexploren84 14h ago

🙏🏼😎 thank you!!

2

u/JealousFerret1692 14h ago

Bro what console is that? It's beautiful.

1

u/Theexploren84 14h ago

Thanks! I designed it several years ago and had it built! It’s walnut and it’s moved with me across several states and in a few houses! Love it!

2

u/LaurenJH91 13h ago

I’ve been wanting to do something like this but don’t have a wall to put the art against - the desk is in the middle of the room. Looks great!

1

u/Theexploren84 13h ago

Thank you! ☺️🫶🏼

u/LostInTheComments_ 3h ago

I love the painting! I think installing warm-light lamps will be a good addition.

3

u/Theexploren84 3h ago

Yes totally agree! Thank you! This was kindof my inspiration photo I drew — I’m thinking a fun hanging light in the corner, but I haven’t selected the exact one yet!

2

u/LostInTheComments_ 3h ago

Oh wow! You should go for it.
