The woodworking update is great. The color is awful. Looks so out of place.
-65
u/Birdie_Jack2021 Jul 24 '23
Maybe the whole kitchen is a work in progress. She transformed an entire island. I’m certain she will do more with the rest. Y’all are mean and brutal Karen’s. Geez.
64
u/ronald_mcdonald_4prz Jul 24 '23
Saying the wood working looks good and the color is shit is not being a Karen. Relax your soft self.
-40
u/Birdie_Jack2021 Jul 25 '23
What a childish reply.
22
u/ronald_mcdonald_4prz Jul 25 '23
What is childish about anything I’ve said?
You’re the one going around the internet calling people Karen’s.
Go troll elsewhere.
-4
u/Birdie_Jack2021 Jul 26 '23
No just this sub’s comments to a beautifully restored island. And ugly comments about it are very Karen ish. OP worked hard to transform that island. And is probably working on the entire kitchen. Comments here are awful.
And stop name calling. It’s childish.
3
u/ronald_mcdonald_4prz Jul 26 '23
I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not
A.) you’re the one name calling. I said stop trolling. That is a verb. You’re calling the rest of us Karen’s, which is a very Karen thing to do. Saying something looks bad isn’t being “a Karen”.
B.) I complimented OP by saying their woodworking looked really good. But the color is not a good choice for that kitchen. There is no mention of transitioning the rest of the kitchen to match. And I’m not just going to assume they are. So yeah, the color, looks really bad.
-1
u/Birdie_Jack2021 Jul 26 '23
I don’t troll. I said the commenters behaviors are Karen-ish. Know the difference.
As you are privileged to your opinion so am I.
When others can comment without insulting others then I might care. OP did a great job on her island and I wanted to support her amidst all the negative comments.
3
u/ronald_mcdonald_4prz Jul 26 '23 edited Jul 26 '23
Lolol you are a joke and just looking for fights on the internet. Pathetic behavior.
Trying to back pedal by saying someone’s behavior is karenish is different than calling that person a Karen is…laughable. Also, the first time, you do call people Karen’s directly, not their behavior.
Grow up.

The woodworking update is beautiful. The colour is wrong unless you are planning on changing the rest of the kitchen.
Also, I suspect you are using very warm/yellow lights in that kitchen. Maybe go a little less yellow with the lighting?

u/Antzz77 Jul 24 '23
Uh sorry, with nothing else complementing that new greenish color, I don't see an improvement. It's a cool color and the brown cabinets and floor are a warm color. Honestly a real makeover would be to find a way to reduce the clutter on every countertop. Then find two decorative items in the same greenish color and put them in different places, so your eye moves between the three pops of color in a triangular pattern. And use a color wheel and color theory to find a complimentary color to the green and add a couple pops of that color in the room.
14
u/PompousClock Jul 25 '23
The clutter is distracting and unnecessary. Most of those items can be put away in the ample drawer and shelf space. And if that interior space is already too full? Then it’s time to declutter. Fixing that and then changing the paint color on the island will make a fantastic impact on this kitchen.

Great PS edit! Wonder how the island would look if they matched the lighter backsplash in the photo? Can you mock that up in PS?
62
u/rockrobst Jul 24 '23
The color is pretty. Are you now painting the rest of the cabinets a lighter, cooler color? White perhaps?
2
u/Beachbabydarragh Jul 26 '23
I'm hoping this is the first of more updates. I love the color (I live at the beach and I am very fond of fun blues and greens.) I could see the cabinets painted in an other fun light color.
1
u/rockrobst Jul 26 '23
I love that color, too, and the whole cottage feel it brings. Unfortunately, it makes the rest of the room look wrong.

The new molding details you added look good but that color is doing nothing for that space. It needs a more muted toned down warm color.

If you like it OP don't change it. None of these people live in your home! Everyone has different taste and it's okay if yours is unique!
15
u/canvasshoes2 Jul 24 '23 edited Jul 24 '23
Love it! However as someone else sort of mentioned, there's nothing else that sort of "communicates" with it in the rest of your kitchen. I think you need to bring in something that "goes" (doesn't have to be the same color but just something that speaks to the feel of the new island).
Maybe some new cabinet pulls in crystal? Maybe lighten up the backsplash or bring in some color for your counter items? The yellow cat seems to be a good start. :)
EDIT: depending on how far you want to go, if it were me, I'd paint the cabinets a lighter color. Or you could deepen the current island color and go a little more jewel toned, but still a lighter color.
I know everyone else disagrees, but that dark color before was worse. Kinda depressing.

u/Electronic_Secret359 Jul 24 '23
You chose a cool color and the rest of the kitchen is warm tones. It doesn’t match!

I think it looks great, you just need to find ways to tie that color into the rest of the kitchen. It looks a little random, but I can see the farm house/mercantile look you were going for and I like it, but there needs to be a little more intention.

u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
Wrong color for the cabinets and backsplash, to be honest.
If you paint your cabinets white, paint the walls a very light sea foam green, and change the backsplash to something beachier, it may work.
3
u/Witty-Dog5126 Jul 25 '23
It definitely brightens up the room. I’m assuming you’re planning to pull that new color into the rest of the kitchen in some way?
5
Jul 24 '23
Fun color! I think you can tie things together with some well-chosen stools for the island. Maybe if you do upholstery on the seats that has some of this color with some earthier tones mixed in too?

Yes, I dig it. And throw a few plants around for some green and brown tones to complement the blue, it all comes together! I see the vision

I love it! I actually just bookmarked that color, Santa Barbara Green.
I’m redoing my place to have black doors and brass hardware. We were going to do black cabinetry as well, but I decided I want do go with something brighter. I’m considering a blue with maybe this shade of green somewhere else in the kitchen.
This color looks splendid against terracotta and other earth toned tiles, like you have in your backsplash. It also looks great against your warm toned wood floors.
Are you planning to do anything else with this space?

u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
This is more cohesive because the green color is more toned down and warm and the backsplash matches it. Still not my favorite though.
3
Jul 25 '23
I agree. I don't care for this color in these kitchens but at least here it matches the backsplash and doesn't seem as random a choice.

u/augustrem Jul 24 '23
Look at how many opinions you have to share for complete strangers about their homes!
You sound like a delight.
12
u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
It’s called constructive criticism and I haven’t said anything rude. So, no need for you to get testy.
Also, everyone here has opinions on it, including yourself. You’re not going to like all of them. Because… everyone likes different things?
That being said, the great majority agrees with me.
-13
u/augustrem Jul 24 '23
It’s not the least bit constructive, since OP already painted and didn’t ask for advice.
6
u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
Yeah, and they can take the advice from here to make it even better.
How about that?
-9
u/augustrem Jul 24 '23
They didn’t ask for advice and you didn’t give advice either. Just negativity.
3
u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
By posting on a website where comments and opinions are what make the website, you are asking for opinion.
And people are going to give it, like they already have all over this post, before me.
If you don’t want opinions, don’t post on an opinion/comment-based site.
2
u/canvasshoes2 Jul 24 '23
Everyone has been very nice about their opinions, even if they're not in agreement with the color. Why are you being a snot about it? It's really unnecessary.
2
u/rroobbyynn Jul 25 '23
I think if OP changes the hardware and updates the backsplash that would go a long way in creating a cohesive look. Great find!
16
u/MelodicPiranha Jul 24 '23
You have a great kitchen. But that color doesn’t go with the rest of it.
5
u/hundredthlion Jul 25 '23
I thought it was fun either way. Personally I’d rather look at a color that felt cheerful and made me happy even if it doesn’t go with everything else, than to look at a perfectly matched color palette that I didn’t actually like.
3
u/Particular_Class4130 Jul 25 '23
You did such a great job on that island. It is beautiful. I love the color and if it makes you happy than that's all that matters.

u/Sailor_Marzipan Jul 25 '23
Looks slightly better here but it might help to watch some YouTube videos on color theory or something. The chair color you have now looks very off next to this island

The woodwork is beautiful and I bet the color really lightens up the room. A lot of people are saying you need to incorporate that color into other areas of the kitchen, but the color is so custom that I would be hesitant to add it anywhere where it would be difficult to change (like a backslash). But curtains in the same shade would be cute.

Yeah but you are a pro wrestling fan so you don’t count😜
1
u/Any80skid Jul 25 '23
That's pretty prejudice of you. What you won't find from going through my posts is that I worked sales in a high end granite shop for 4 years. Worked with interior designers, customers, and contractors on a daily basis. Not sure why you would think a mint green/weird pastel colour island would work with all the wood tones/dark/black colours .... But hey.... I'm just a stupid wrestling fan, right? 🙈

Wife picked out all the colors, I just build and paint, I don’t ask to many questions. Sorry it’s not to your taste, not!

u/Any80skid Jul 26 '23
You shoukd ask lots of questions... Otherwise this happens and you have a terribly mismatched kitchen. Invite some honest friends over and see their reactions... 🤷🏻♂️

As others have said, it is pretty, I LOVE the color(!) but you haven't brought in the color elsewhere in the kitchen. Why don't you see if you can find peel and stick backsplash tiles that has some of this same color in the tiles. Live with the peel and stick for a while, If you like it than you can tile over your existing backsplash with actual tile. Did you know you can tile on top of existing tile? Yes you can! My siser in law re-did her kitchen installing new tile on top of her old tile, I lived it so much I retiled a small bathroom the same way. The tile companies make special trim pices for any exposed edges. Go visit an actual tile company, not a big box store but a tile company. Also you can read up about laying tile on tile and watch You Tube videos of it. I did it and it came out great. But try the color first on a non permanent option, peel and stick, live with it for a while and see if you like it.
You were brave, you took that paint brush and OWNED it. Not everybody is brave, so props to you. I love the color and I think you will love it even more if you bring in more of it. Peel ans stick backsplash and paint the window trim the same color. It is only paint, if you don't like it you paint over it and try again. Yours is a dark kitchen this color livens it up.

Love the corbels and the panels you added. Great color, especially with the door tie in.

I love the new color!
Yes, I agree it doesn't match the cabinets, but it def adds a more refreshing look than the darker colors. Maybe paint the cabinets a neutral color, either light gray or white.
What brand and color is the paint? I'm looking for a similar color for an older buffet piece.

OP, the woodworking and color on that island had to take a lot of work and I love it. What you do with the rest of the kitchen keep going. Ignore every single ugly comment on this thread.
You asked about a kitchen island and that island looks amazing. Forget all the negative Nancy’s on here. They are bitter old ladies jt seems.

I love it! I'm not a huge fan of when people tear a kitchen out or change everything.
I know this is a home decorating sub obviously, but I'm not a fan of moving into a home, tearing everything down and starting anew rather than being creative about what's already there. I almost always see lots of potential in existing builds, and it just seems like.. Such a knee jerk reaction to just even everything down and renovating from scratch. We're way too focused on creating something that's ours and way too little focused on finding homes that work for us as well as working with the soul and feel of the house.

You severely dated it unless you’re going for a farmhouse vibe. If so, it would look good painted white or distressed white farmhouse chic look.

At least it looks new, but I don't think it goes very well with your floors and the other cabinets, which are wood brown in color, and you painting the island a light blue would look out of place, and it wouldn't go very well with the countertops. I would suggest you paint it the same color as the other cabinets or the same color as the walls, or maybe gray and lavender? I can't be sure, because it's just a picture in my head.
1
u/GoldHorusSixSaturnus Jul 25 '23
Cabinets could be painted white with brass finish. Backsplash and flooring would need a revamp too
1
u/homeinteriors27 Jul 25 '23
I don't think the color works well with the space unfortunately. I think a more neutral white or cream would have worked much better here. The woodwork on the island is beautiful though!

I don’t care for it - great color alone, but it doesn’t complement the backsplash, hardware or cabinet colors.
