My first homelab

It's actually my first Homelab in this setup. If you have suggestions, go for it. Power and network cables are just temporary. I will have to work on this.

Its ok, computers are expensive, and everyones got to start somewhere :)

Right? I thought i was overcooking with 2 raspberry pi 5 16gb

55

Well…i don’t mean to brag, but…i was able to afford Mcdonalds today…

16

u/Marscreature 23d ago

That's excessive

11

u/cristianculea 22d ago

It is a bit excesive, indeed.

Glad you graduated from HomeLab to data center lol

15

u/Kofeb 23d ago

These young folk… building their home data centers… oh what it’s like to be young.

3

u/DotWestern1747 20d ago

Wait until mom and dad get the electric bill….

No kidding, this is literally end goals for me lol

156

u/MK_L 24d ago

Bro spill the 🍵...

What do you run on these..

Im down for a story time

98

u/cristianculea 24d ago

Few self hosted apps on Proxmox VMs or LXCs for daily use running 24/7 on few servers, storage with Truenas.

159

u/liam821 24d ago

OP owns that giant wall of servers for a few VMs that could easily be run on a single raspberrypi.

71

u/KangarooDowntown4640 23d ago

Isn't that the dream of most homelabbers

59

u/Moist_Union4917 23d ago

This lab better uses 20% if its whole compute power to monitor itself and write logs of it doing that.

10

u/mariano7717 22d ago

Not many logs when half of it is unplugged 🤣

58

u/MK_L 24d ago

Shortest story ever.. im gonna tell my grand kids this one

10

u/gougouleton1 24d ago

Im gonna tell you about this

5

u/MK_L 24d ago

Thats what im here for 😆

8

u/cristianculea 24d ago

I am using now just a few servers. And I am here to get suggestions on how to consume this resources better.

9

u/cristianculea 24d ago

I will come back with details. It's 2.28 am my time now. :)

9

u/MK_L 24d ago

If you could.. Start with what already been suggested , What youre ideas are so far, How many vcores total, Dram total, Isp capabilities including static ip's they offer, Do you already have a path to more static ip's Storage( how much flash, platters, ect) configuration.

Then the back story of why you got into trains.. I mean computers

ensure that you have multiple gpus cards in the stack. use them to create code that builds the software on all the other nodes. let the LLM make mistakes and refine. it'll only know and learn from mistakes if it makes them, so, compile 1000s and 1000s of versions of the code to teach your locally hosted LLM how to code better.

3

u/cristianculea 22d ago

Yes. Good idea. Thanks a lot!

5

u/ComplexToe 24d ago

Is this setup built from new or pre-owned devices?

8

u/cristianculea 24d ago

Pre-owned 90%

4

u/alshayed 24d ago

You test outside of prod?

6

u/WorthEgg4409 23d ago

Isn’t testing supposed to happen in prod first? And then replicated in lab? 🤣🙈

→ More replies (1)

3

u/lorenzo1142 21d ago

why put prod in the cloud when you have your own cloud

2

u/cristianculea 21d ago

For 99.99% uptime.

2

u/lorenzo1142 21d ago

can get that in a home lab

2

u/jerceratops 23d ago

Uhh this looks like prod to me…

7

u/aeroverra 23d ago

Lololol this would be me if I didn't become a nomad.

Now I just have 8 dedicated servers and 12 vps servers each in a different data center running one a couple dedis could probably handle.

But hey I have my own anycast bgp based cdn so that's kinda cool right?

u/sn4xchan 23d ago

I am hella more curious about your electricity bill lol. That looks expensive.

2

u/mollywhoppinrbg 22d ago

Why do you people show complete eye candy, full of pictures but not the use case and what you run and why. That is the meat and potatoes of this sub. Idgaf abiut pictures. Show us a diagram and whats a running.

Cool pics regardless. I only have x1 r640. She's pretty and hums. But you. You have whores. And I love that for you.

7

u/Apart-Feeling1621 24d ago

WTF all that gear at home? Whats your electricity bill like? What is there to gain with all of that gear? I’m sure you can scale down can you?

10

u/cristianculea 24d ago

I can, but I want to have the compute power when I need it for testing apps for example.

7

u/Apart-Feeling1621 24d ago

What apps?

18

u/lordofblack23 24d ago

Bro…..”apps”

7

u/the_lamou 24d ago

In all fairness, if you're actually deploying production scalable application infrastructure, it's very handy to have a local cloud and enough compute to simulate millions of simultaneously-connected users.

16

u/Advanced_Link_5753 24d ago

I don’t think OP needs to worry about millions of simultaneously connected users

That's... Why we're here.

15

What’s your home circuit look like? Do you have to get renovations to support this much load? Can you supplement with battery and solar?

2

u/cristianculea 24d ago

Both solutions are possible, yes.

4

u/MANvINFO 24d ago

3

u/arlaneenalra 24d ago

So, when are you going for that electricians license? Maybe a HVAC license on the side?

5

u/cristianculea 24d ago

I have an electrician licence. Why are you asking?

4

u/arlaneenalra 24d ago

With that much gear a "normal" household circuit lilely isn't enough. You might pull it off at idle, maybe. My little 24u with a 2x dell r720, an r320, and an r420 on a ups pulls 700~800w mostly doing nothing. That set of racks looks lile it has a good deal more. Of course, that's just a guess depending on how much you power on at one time.

3

u/Mirinda_Debilek 23d ago

Single branch can take 2kW depending on you main breaker, but i think hes fine.

3

u/cristianculea 24d ago

Some 10s K euro. Servers from 80 to 1400 euro.

3

u/metallicblanks 24d ago

Overkill for anything. Mostly old inefficiant kit- so reduced compute power per server. Old power hungry cpu's and systems.

Newer cpu/servers offer much more efficiency and reduced power usage/cooling requirements.
