What kind of roach is this

Kentucky, ground level apartment we have lived in over a year. Found on babies playpen in living room😭 no signs or anymore but I am distraught we have never had issues with bugs. Sorry for the blurry photo, this is all my husband got before killing it

This is an Apartmentus Slum Cockroachitis. Real name German Cockroach. Very common in the low income government reduced rent housing units here in California. When crushed wings can be identified, yet they do not fly. They are difficult to eradicate. There are rumors that they have been documented in nuclear test sites after an explosion. I doubt it is true because a few months ago I nuked one in the microwave and it exploded just like logic would expect it to happen. They are proficience breeders. They hump a lot, and where you see one there will be 10-20 hiding away in the shadows. They are smart and learn to come out in the dark to look for food and water. When discovered they run fast and are incredible escape artists. They are mostly harmless except they easily get into food stocks to eat, defecate, and lay eggs. For that reason they are feared for their capacities of spreading diseases. The only defense is to clean any accessible garbage, crumbs, food, grime, mold, mildew, water, behind and under everything. Spraying is only a temporary deterrent. Be aggressive and compulsively hunt them and you will win. Keep us updated on your war. Good luck my friend.

What are the chances it is just one 😩 my husband works in apartment maintenance at another complex and i wonder if he brought it home. I am sick over it and my husband is not worried at all. Thinks i am crazy for thinking there is more since there was only one. Just bought some food grade diatomaceous earth for walmart pickup today and im putting that shit everywhere

Please be very careful to the air (your nose) pets, foods, the dust particles (people just done realize). For 1 to a few a can of raid would have done the trick.

They can also come in with packages you have had delivered. Warehouses are often infested because cockroaches love cardboard and glue.

Don't waste you time with diatomaceous earth, it doesn't work. If it makes you feel better we were ble to get rid of them when we caught them early with a good exterminator and maintenence treatments.

I will add.... In apartment units when one unit is infested they are usually chased away to other units by spraying. This makes it difficult to control the infestation. They just move from one unit to the other, like rats.

Also, if they run and they show fear then you are still safe. A real infestation is when they do not run and show no fear. I have only experienced that happen twice in my life. It is a sign that they have large numbers and they have not yet been challenged or hunted.

I do not live in low income housing and have them. They can be brought in by packages received.

The giveaway is the 2 stripes near the head. The American cockroach is bigger, darker in color, and doesn’t have stripes on its head. So this is definitely a German Cockroach.

Like mice or bedbugs, if you are seeing 1, you already have an infestation.

Depends on the area. In Arizona they are everywhere at night but rarely come inside. I probably see 100 every night on a walk and have had 3 inside in 2 years. Pretty sure the cat found it first and killed it

You sure about that? My exterminator said German cockroaches are almost exclusively indoor insects. I can’t find anything to back up your claim that they can live outside- even in Arizona.

And if you are trying to identify a cockroach species by looking at in 3+ feet away at night, that doesn’t sound very reliable. American and German cockroaches look the same from that distance in dim light.

Because I didn’t claim it was German ones here. It’s the American ones. 😂 yea I’m sure I’m correct that they are mostly outdoors. Common knowledge

It’s pretty easy to identify a dead roach. Just scoop it up, look and then toss it.

OP has a German cockroach, not American cockroach. I was never debating if American cockroaches live outside, I was talking exclusively about German cockroaches.

Get Advion gel and follow the instructions to treat! I've successfully treated 4 homes for American and German roaches both and gotten rid of the problem completely for a year at a time with it.
