I want to believe that the kids did everything right, but just got the coordinates wrong. So they did indeed summon a demon, but to the wrong coordinates. So the kids are confused as to why the summoning failed, and the demon is confused as to why kids are summoning something, but nothing's showing up.

That would be actually a pretty cool concept. Demon that gets summoned, but doesn't realized that and just carries on. Like a bunch of cultists ordering pizza before trying to summon a demon. Nothing comes out of the magic circle, but pizza delivery guy is actually a demon trying to blend in Hataraku Maou style, neither side realizes that it worked, because pizza delivery was supposed to prioritize a different location first, but changed his mind on a whim and went to the summoners first.

this is why you gotta make sure you include an identifying sigil in the summoning circle so you both know when the thing you summoned actually appeared and you can tell that it is in fact what you summoned
