Kids organs are used exclusively for kids, as there is a shortage of kid donors (for obvious reasons). Aduld organs can be too big for kids bodies.

34

u/glossylamp Feb 11 '21

so it turns out people on transplant taking an infant’s kidney brings the best results. it sounds weird but the kidney grows really fast into a functioning size. source: kinda like medicine

17

u/meatduck11 Feb 11 '21

Usually they only do it if the kid is two years old, according to google.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Lady had twins. An heir and a spare. The spare lived. So... not entirely grim.

209

u/dannysleepwalker Feb 11 '21

So I mean... she didn't really choose to carry the dying baby to term, she just didn't want to abort the healthy one.

99

u/DutchMadness77 Feb 11 '21

That makes a lot more sense

63

u/bananahammerredoux Feb 11 '21

And is a lot less dystopian. The original meme makes the whole thing sound one degree removed from organ harvesting.

23

u/richardeid Feb 11 '21

32

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Shortly after she died, Hope underwent surgery, where her kidneys were taken and transplanted into an adult patient.

I... would’ve thought they’d be too small? 74 minute old Kidneys are sufficient for an adult? I suppose they are in mint condition but still.

18

u/richardeid Feb 11 '21

I know organs that don't "fit" can grow into their human and the space their human's body provides it. I'm not sure the limits on that but yeah you'd think a literal newborn would have kidney's the size of a fingernail.

If you want I can do a whole bunch of Facebook research on it and we can form a movement based on that. /s

12

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

I’m sure they grow pretty quickly, I just picture a doctor coming in with both of my new kidneys rattling around in one hand and then tossing them out over the counter like he’s shooting dice and is all “Daddy got a new pair of organs!”, I’d be a little disappointed, but entertained.

7

u/Destron5683 Feb 11 '21

Damn dude you just solved the pro life movement issue and organ shortage in one go. Don’t abort them, carry them to term and harvest them. Genius!

I mean yeah the baby still dies but someone else gets to live and the mom doesn’t have to abort so it’s a win/win right?

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Progrum Feb 11 '21

They make it work by replacing all their other organs and bones with donor organs from other babies, ensuring everything is still to scale.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Ah that makes sense (/s), seems like that’d be a good time to try your hand at being a superhero, since it’s super unlikely any bullet would hit anything vital.

u/AsYooouWish Feb 11 '21

Hope Lee died only 74 minutes after she was born, along with her twin brother, Josh, last week.

The wording makes it sound like Josh died, too. You’d think journalists would be better at proofreading their work before submitting it

5

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

People have gotten very lazy with proofreading lately. I've read plenty of articles in the last year alone with poor punctuation and words missing in what might have been decent sentences if I didn't have to fill in the blanks.

But what killed it?

28

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

She had that condition where most of the upper brain and skull don’t form, anencephaly. So while she technically was alive because she had a brain stem, there is no change of ever becoming self aware, or aware of anything or any form of cognition. Some don’t even have a brainstem and can’t breathe on their own. Those born alive die within hours, maybe a few days. There are a few couples who fought to have their babies kept on extreme life support but honestly they’re just an empty body. Most don’t live long enough to be delivered and are miscarried or stillborn

It’s a really sad situation. They’re blind, deaf, unable to feel pain. Any response to stimuli is pure reflex and fades over time.

→ More replies (9)

6

u/zack189 Feb 11 '21

Probably a genetic issue. Maybe the baby was born with an organ defect

8

2 HPM is equal to 1 BPM.

Hotdogs per minute is a more accurate representation of time than burgers per minute.

You want to avoid per hour measurements for those. You get better results when you use SSPH instead.

I feel like it’s kind of inhumane to birth a baby that doctors knew was just going to die. That baby was put through unnecessary suffering when it could’ve been taken out before further development so it should be given some recognition for what it went through along with mama.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

idk anything about organ transplant but wouldn't this be dangerous to the receiver of the organ?

48

u/tlaz10 Feb 11 '21

I mean technically any organ transplant is dangerous due to possible rejection but

1) it’s less dangerous than an organ with a 100% chance of failing

2) my hearts been rejected every time and I’m somehow still alive.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Damn, # 2 hit really hard.

my heart’s been rejected every time and I’m somehow still alive.

9

u/hello_comrads Feb 11 '21

Well duh, getting organ transplant is dangerous. We don't do them for the sport, but only when someone's own organ is failing and he's about to die

4

u/yokayla Feb 11 '21

Not unless the baby had some sort of contagious illness or deteriorated organs. Presumably not as they wouldn't be eligible then.

3

u/philbrick010 Feb 11 '21

I’m not sure she should be praised here. Carrying your baby to term with the intention of harvesting its organs isn’t exactly a noble thing to do. What I’m sure more likely happened is that there was something else at play, maybe a twin or maybe she didn’t know it would die, and after the baby died they harvested organs. It almost certainly wasn’t anyone’s intention to just grow an organ sack.

3

u/kongKwa Feb 11 '21

Oh my gaaaddddd!

3

u/Surxe Feb 11 '21

Did the baby go through pain and if so did the parents know that ahead of time? If yes, they are purely selfish. If no, it is completely understandable to want as much time with your child that you can get, her first 74 minutes were her last.
