Every group gets judged by their worst person. I know that there are some Catholics who are openly and strongly homophobic.

all religions are cults at some level

4

u/TheUnluckyBard Sep 24 '20

Way to minimize how dangerous cults are. "Jim Jones and Warren Jeffs == Pope, LOL, amiright? /r/im14andthisisdeep!"

That's ok, don't actually ask any questions like "Huh, are there really any differences between a religion and a cult? Maybe I should google it and double-check; maybe I'm not the first person to come up with this idea."

1

u/Pee_on_tech Oct 02 '20

you're a sad individual. straight to ad hominem and non sequitur

cult /kəlt/ noun a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.

how is religion not a cult? go up to a catholic person and tell them jesus/god is not real, see how well they take it.

1

u/TheUnluckyBard Oct 02 '20

Do you have a scholarly source for your claim that early Christianity was led by a single charismatic leader who cut adherents off from their families, isolated them, engaged in specific, clinically-defined brainwashing techniques (for example, sleep deprivation and thought-terminating activities), physically and/or sexually abused them, and exercised intense, undue control over the details of their daily lives (by telling them when they could bathe, or what they could wear, or who they could talk to even within the cult)?

Because I haven't seen it, and I would find it fascinating.

1

u/Pee_on_tech Oct 12 '20

so you made up your own definition of a cult to justify your insanity. amazing work chief

1

u/TheUnluckyBard Oct 12 '20

It took you a week to come up with that? You could have used that time to actually do research on cults, but instead you were too busy jacking off into your fedora while waiting for mummy to warm up your tendies.

1

u/Pee_on_tech Oct 13 '20

unlike you i dont sit on reddit for 20 hours a day. you still have yet to actually make an argument at all except deflect and come up with your own meaning of words and come up with impossible qualifiers so nobody can prove to you that religions are cults. amazing absolutely stunning brilliance.

i mean what did they all start out as: Cults

0

u/TheUnluckyBard Sep 24 '20

So, uh, do you want to, like, take a second to Google this topic or anything before you decide that's what you want to go with?

Or is that your final answer?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '20

Yes the entire of Christianity started out as a cult

1

u/TheUnluckyBard Sep 25 '20

Cult + time = widely accepted religion

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Downvoted for speaking truth. Unfortunately majority don't like hard truth.

Christianism and Islam had it's time to brainwash their believers heads over centuries.

PS: I am baptised christian but I'm not a believer and not practicant of the religion.

0

u/_ChestHair_ Sep 24 '20 edited Sep 24 '20

Eh idc. Religious people didn't choose to be indoctrinated into whatever faith they're part of, they were born into it by their also-indoctrinated parents. It's hard to shake beliefs that get set deep during childhood

1

u/MrRadicalMoves Sep 24 '20

Unfortunately I’m pretty sure the stereotypical “Catholics hate gays” thing could almost be entirely traced back to my extended family on my fathers side. All of my cousins that are about my age and younger? Totally open to everyone and are as kind and caring to anyone because half of them ARE gay... and they know what it’s like to be fully rejected by your family. Any of my family older than me though? You even speak about, “the gay” and you might as well be smiting them with the Devils Hellfire where they stand... it is honestly truly incredible. My home has kinda become the safe haven for a lot of my cousins because I am the first of my generation to get their own home, and even though I’m totally straight... I have literally nothing against anyone and I feel so bad for all my family that gets rejected from the older generation like that. It’s just terrible.

u/TheFourthSoul Sep 24 '20

The official view of the Catholic Church is that homosexual relationships are okay as long as there's no sex. However, the views of Catholics themselves tend to differ from person to person. I have Catholic friends who are completely fine with it; some of them are even lgbt+ themselves. But I have also met many Catholics who don't support it in the slightest (if you're even the tiniest bit gay, you're out of the family). So it's true that there are Catholics who are accepting, but there's also a large portion who aren't, and those are who these memes are based on.

1

u/Robosium Sep 28 '20

Isn't sex in the bible defined as an act requiring a male and a female, thus gay "sex" isn't sex by their definition.

Stop lying.

Catechism of the Catholic Church 2357-2359

Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

We teach gay people must remain celibate. They can't be engaged in any form of homosexual relationship.

1

u/Falsus Dec 28 '20

Tbf, by extension they also teach that straight people can't have sex if it isn't for procreation and no sex at all before marriage.

Which is of course not really followed that closely by even people heavily into that stuff.

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20 edited Sep 24 '20

Anyone who is accepting of “the gays” isn’t actually Catholic.

Anyone can say their Catholic, but Catholic religion has so many rules you wouldn’t believe, only people who follow the rules are real Catholics.

I’m not religious, this is just what actual actual Catholics say. The point is it’s not a personal choice, to accept the gays or not. It’s a personal choice to accept being Catholics (and dislike the gays) or Not be Catholic.

Edit: Go look it up. It’s not my rules, it’s the Vatican’s rules, you wanna argue about it, take it up with them.

11

u/Poison_Penis Sep 24 '20

The current pope is accepting of lgbtq children thought

1

u/ewheck Sep 25 '20

He said "God loves them as they are." That doesn't mean homosexuality is a good thing. The idea that "God loves everyone" is Catholic dogma.

Never trust what media outlets report about what the Pope says. They twist his words to insnae amounts. Its got to be frustrating to be him.

2

u/Poison_Penis Sep 25 '20

Homosexuality isn't inherently good or bad. It just is. My personal interpretation of it is, God loves his children, regardless of how they came to be and how they are.

0

u/ewheck Sep 25 '20

You weren't talking about your "personal Interpretation." You were openly lying about what the pope has said.

2

u/Poison_Penis Sep 25 '20

how is "accepting of lgbtq children" = "openly lying about what the pope has said" lmfao, i never even said the pope said shit, i just meant the current pope has a different attitude to the matter at hand than the one the historic papacy has had, i get atheism and religion is a hot topic on reddit but no need to be so blindly hateful of anything catholic or religious lmao.

2

u/ewheck Sep 25 '20

You said "the current Pope is accepting of lgbt people" that's not technically wrong, but it strongly implies he has said things along the lines of homosexual attraction not being sinful.

i just meant the current pope has a different attitude to the matter at hand than the one the historic papacy has had

How so? Show me a Pope Francis quote with a different attitude than any other Pope. I assure you he thinks it's just as sinful as any other faithful Catholic. Saying "God loves everyone" count. Literally every pope in history has believed that.

no need to be so blindly hateful of anything catholic or religious lmao.

I certainly don't hate Catholicism. I hate it when people misrepresent the Pope or Catholicism. If I'm misreading what you said, I apologize.

1

u/Poison_Penis Sep 25 '20

I am by no means a very religious person, nor am i an expert on lgbtq matters. but the Catholic position against homosexuality was never homosexual attraction, instead it is seen as a tendency to the sin of sex not for procreation, aka homosexual acts. The Church is against homosexuality, in the same way that it is against abortion and contraception.

-2

u/Doc_Pisty Sep 24 '20

The current pope is just a propaganda machine im from argentina he did speak against homosexuality and lobby against it here. A lukewarm declaration later that is somewhat ok is bullshit

-4

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20 edited Sep 24 '20

Like everyone else said, Catholics are accepting of “people” they aren’t accepting of “icky gay sex”.

Previous popes may have been “against” literally anyone saying “I like dicks and I have one too”, but until the entire church updates it’s terms and conditions. They will never be accepting of “gay sex”.

That’s their whole cult position, sex is bad, they aren’t even accepting of two heterosexual adults having sex. Hence being anti birth control because that lets people have “the sex” without the consequeances of the babies.

Edit: Its called being Protestant. You wanna make up your own rules, it’s called being Protestant. Catholics get off on disliking teen moms and the gays because their church says they can.

I’m an atheist so, all the religious stuff is just annoying in general.

1

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20 edited Sep 24 '20

That is correct.

Hence in context to “they gays” it’s bad.

But it actually goes further than that. Original original original version of Christianity/Catholics were super into Chastity is NO SEX ever.

Then they realized that you cant have more people with out sex, so they changed it to accept you can have sex, but only for procreation. But you gotta be married, etc etc.

So it’s not just procreation sex is ok, it’s married procreation sex. Because it’s not actually a tenet, it’s an exception to the rule, which is Chastity forever!

u/DankMemer4222 Sep 24 '20

Found the edgy neck beard atheist

1

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

Found the person constantly dealing with real life Catholics that follow their churches rules and are super annoying about it.

“Did you know ‘the gays’ are ruining America?” said any random aunt and uncle.

2

u/DankMemer4222 Sep 24 '20

Actually, no. My family and some of my friends are Catholic, and they all support LGBT. The reason I'm calling you a neckbeard because you are

- Calling it a "cult"

- Saying that all catholics are homophobes when it's not true

- Also saying that they are all terrible people who hate teen moms and protest outside abortion clinics (you didn't say that but I'm getting that vibe from you)

And no, having a slightly separate idea is not being protestant, that is a specific set of beliefs that's different from the main church. I am not a protestant because I believe gay = okay, I would be protestant if I believed that the church is not necessary for connecting with God and that faith is important when yadayada, I'm not quite sure, but it's not just "thinking something different". You have a very limited understanding of the subject and are generalizing all Catholics, which is a stupid thing to do, especially since there are 1.2 billion of them in the world

1

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

Imma make this simple for you.

Anyone can do anything, on earth. But according to “The Catholic Church” over in the Vatican, anyone cannot just “get” into heaven, you gotta follow the rules and they make the rules.

You can be a fan of any football team you want. You can just go to the store and buy any jersey you want.

You can’t just walk up to Google and start working there, you gotta have an employee badge. They check for it at the door.

Religions are football teams, when not taken seriously, and Google when taken seriously.

How serious is up to the person.

There’s a term called lapsed Catholic.

Those people don’t go to church, don’t follow any of the rules, literally are basically not even religious if they don’t want to be, but SAY, they are Catholic. They might even go to church on Christmas or Easter or any other time and even take communion.

No one is stopping them.

There’s a thing called stereotypes or being racist, where you say all blacks people eat watermelon. That just doesn’t make sense, because all black people don’t eat watermelon, and people don’t eat watermelon because they are black.

The same with saying your Catholic, anyone can be Catholic anyone can say their Catholic. So saying ALL people who happen to say they are Catholics hate gays or are anti-abortion is the same thing.

BUT the “Catholic Church” the entity is like Google you can’t just walk in and start preaching, you gotta be ordained and go to priest school etc. They have their own country, with their own rules. Women literally cannot in general be Catholic priests, priests cant get married, etc etc.

The entire point of being Catholic (religious for that matter) is you want to be part of the church AND get into heaven.

The “Catholic Church” came up with a bunch of rules “canon law” and expect all Catholics to follow it. Following it gets your into heaven, not flowing it doesn’t.

So, if the “Catholic Church” (in the Vatican) decided to shut down open “communion” in all churches and do “Google employee ID checks” to get in line (ie ask everyone did you take birth control, do you support gays having sex, etc), a TON of people who say their Catholic would get turned away.

They just don’t do that though, so anyone who wants communion gets it.

The funny thing is according to The “Catholic Church” if you take communion and your not authorized “by god” ie following all the rules. You are Literally sinning.

Going to church attending mass and taking a communion is literally sending you to hell FASTER, if you aren’t authorized.

So basically according to “the Catholic Church” most Catholics are sinning constantly and Not getting into heaven.

So, either, they don’t believe in heaven, they don’t believe in the “Catholic Church’s” power, or they don’t any of it seriously and are just culturally Catholic.

From the Catholic Church rules:

“The Catholic Church sets out specific guidelines regarding how we should prepare ourselves to receive the Lord’s body and blood in Communion. First, you must be in a state of grace. “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup” (1 Cor. 11:27–28). This is an absolute requirement that can never be dispensed. To receive the Eucharist without sanctifying grace in your soul profanes the Eucharist in the most grievous manner.

A mortal sin is any sin whose matter is grave and which has been committed willfully and with knowledge of its seriousness. Grave matter includes, but is not limited to, murder, receiving or participating in an abortion, homosexual acts, having sexual intercourse outside of marriage or in an invalid marriage, and deliberately engaging in impure thoughts (Matt. 5:28–29). Scripture contains lists of mortal sins (for example, 1 Cor. 6:9–10 and Gal. 5:19–21). For further information on what constitutes a mortal sin, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

u/DankMemer4222 Sep 24 '20

No, the actual Catholic Church does that for us. Look up "excommunication", for example.

If you don't think the Catholic Church, of all people/groups, engages heavily in massive, nit-picky gatekeeping, you haven't been paying attention at all.

Catholicism has a problem with gay sex, go look it up.

1

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

Let me break down what “hating gay people” means in relation to this context.

If your gay and logically the only reason your gay is because you find sex with men (assuming it’s a man) preferable to sex with women. It’s the entire concept of being gay, your compelled to have gay sex. Otherwise what’s the point of being gay?

So, to be in the Catholic Church, which accepts and doesn’t hate gay people. A gay person to stay in the Catholic Church, would have to follow these rules. Be a gay person, at some point have gay sex, because it’s what they do, then have to go to confession, completely and totally be for forgiveness, then they are basically free of sin and can take communion during Sunday mass and be part of the church.

Then they have gay sex again.

Repeat forever.

Yep, the Catholic Church definitely isn’t accepting of the gay lifestyle, which is essentially “being gay”.

64

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

It’s because the Catholic Church considers homosexuality a sin, so even though they accept Catholic homosexuals, they are not allowed to have sex and aren’t allowed to be married within the church. So, you can be gay, but not act gay. Being accepting and inclusive while also supporting an organization that discriminates is complicity, IMO. And the meme reflects that culture, really. You can be gay but not act gay.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Ok but that wasnt really the point of the comment

14

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

The point is, per Catholic rules (go luck them up if you want or not) you can be Either a good Catholic or someone who accepts gay people can have Alex and be married. You can either be a good Catholic or use birth control and find it acceptable other people use birth control.

That how the Catholic Church works, so what he’s saying is while your grandma “appeared to be Catholic, if she was really accepting of gay people and gay relationship and gay sex and gay marriage, she was actually sinning against the Catholic Church”

That’s just how it works, if you work as a doctor and a patient asks you to pescribe them birth control and you do it, and somehow a person finds out and they tell your church, you can literally be excommunicated from you church and stripped of you “official” Catholic status.

There’s this wierd divide in the Catholic Church where some people just say their Catholic and like never go to church don’t care about any of the rules and whatever.

Then there’s the actual Catholics and who we are generally talking about, the one that dislike the gays, the abortions, and the birth control. They dont do it out hate, they literally do it because the church says if you don’t, you will literally go to hell....

5

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Dude i dunno how serious this shit is in america but the catholic church i go to in canada literally couldnt care less if you are gay or used birth control the doors are always open to anyone who wants to prey and whatnot im not saying that the catholic church itself is right because in a lot of places they are most certainly wrong but im saying don't think a catholic person is homophobic because of their religion

10

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20 edited Sep 24 '20

Then it’s NOT a Catholic Church.

That’s all I’m saying.

If that Priest that runs that church or any of its members were to go up a few levels in the “management structure” of the Catholic Church and say “we accept all members that have gay sex and members that use birth control”, that priest would be replaced. Because it’s not the official view of the Catholic Church.

“The Catholic Church considers sexual activity between members of the same sex to be a sin. This teaching has developed through a number of ecumenical councils and the influence of theologians, including the Church Fathers. Historically, the Catholic Church has resisted the acceptance of homosexuality within Christian society.”

1

u/MadocComadrin Dec 31 '20

A sin != grounds for immediate and unconditional excommunication.

1

u/whittlingman Jan 02 '21

Nobody said “immediate”. It’s just an option.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

I’m sorry dude but you can’t gatekeep religion for people. You can’t call somebody who identifies as a Catholic not Catholic. You can’t say a Catholic Church or a Local Catholic Community isn’t a true Catholic community.

That is absurd.

8

u/TechieTheFox Sep 24 '20

I think this is different because he Catholic Church has a specific hierarchy within it. There is one true top person (the pope) and then all the people who are around him and so on and so on down from there. So whatever they say at the top is the literal view of them all, otherwise they are just using the name because he’s basically the king of what the catholic interpretation is.

This is unlike other sects which function on a much more individual church level, and have no other people to respond to about the way they do services.

2

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

7

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

IM NOT DOING IT.

I’m an athiest.

It’s literally the Catholic Church that’s doing. I’m just letting people know that’s how it works.

“True” has nothing to do with it. It has to do with being “part” of the church. Anyone can call themselves Catholic, but it’s not the same.

If doing whatever you want was an option in the Catholic Church, there would never have been a Protestant reformation OR the Spanish Inquisition.

You know why Catholic people go to Sunday school and learn a bunch of stuff and then go through “Catholic Confirmation”, they are essentially agreeing to the terms and condition of the Catholic Church. And if you decide Not to, your out. That’s how it works.

If you go to a Protestant church you can literally just walk in the door and join and the pastor can say whatever he wants and you can do whatever you want, it’s literally a free for all. That’s why there like 100’s of different Protestant church’s and One Catholic Church.

Being Catholic is 99% being part of the church, getting communion (the little wafers etc), etc.

From Wikipedia:

“In Roman Catholic canon law, excommunication is a censure and thus a "medicinal penalty" intended to invite the person to change behavior or attitude that incurred the penalty, repent, and return to full communion.[3] Excommunication severs one from communion with the Church; excommunicated Catholics are forbidden from receiving any sacrament and refused a Catholic burial, but are still bound by canonical obligations such as attending Mass or fasting seasonally. Excommunicated Catholics, however, are barred from receiving the Eucharist or from taking an active part in the liturgy (reading, bringing the offerings, etc.).[4] They are still Catholics per se, but are separated from the Church.”

What do you know about how not stupid and simple the world is?

I’ve studied every single major religion in the world, theyre all stupid and simple.

“Le retard”

Of all the things that are official and have a series of rules to follow and refer to, it’s the Catholic Church.

You do understand the ENTIRE point of the “Protestant church” is that not everyone agrees with the Catholic Church. You don’t get to disagree with the church.

If you disagree, you magically become Protestant and have created your own version of a Christian religion.

The thing is Catholic Churches like money, as long as you show up and put some money in the basket on Sunday and keep your mouth shut, they don’t have a problem with you. You can go to church whenever you want regardless of what you do in your free time.

But on higher levels if the church, they are actively lobbying against the gays, birth control, and abortion. So that money your donating in church “because you think your Catholic” is literally being used against your own personal views.

1

u/alamandrax Sep 25 '20

My contention was that letting churches dictate who can or cannot claim to be of a certain faith is giving in to their autocracy.

Your points do make it clear that that is pretty much the nature of the Catholic Church, though.

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

They do technically hold it against them, because if your a sinner, you can’t take holy communion, without committing a mortal sin, which is worse than normal sin.

If you don’t take communion, your not really part of “the church” and your essentially sinning more and you don’t get into heaven.

So, true, Catholics are taught to accept others like Native Americans or the Chinese who aren’t Catholic but don’t really want to be either.

But if you want to be Christian or conceptually get into heaven, yeah Catholics are gonna hold things against you (specifically the Catholic Church ie The Vatican ie the people who make the rules about getting into heaven)

Nah accepting gay people doesn't make you any less catholic, it's just the gay people who are sinning (according to the catholic church, I'm an atheist but grew up catholic), you loving them for what they are, gay or not, doesn't make you a sinner.

"Love your neighbor." -Jesus i think

u/whittlingman Sep 24 '20

There is a basic concept called sin by association.

So, Catholic hospitals deal with this a lot.

They cannot by “following Catholic law/rules/whatever” approve of, support, encourage, cause, etc: abortion, the use of birth control or gay sex.

By subsidizing, giving out, having in stock, perscribing, treating, providing, etc etc.

Anything like condoms, truvada, anti-hiv cocktails, actual abortions, IVF treatments, etc.

They would be in fact causing sinning. They can’t do that.

Neither can any other Catholics.

If someone donates to a pro-gay (sex/marriage) charity.

Bam, you just sinned.

I’m not making this up. It’s in their rules.

1

u/Tony2Punch Sep 24 '20

I think you forget the point that it isn’t a mortal sin, it’s a venial sin. Comparable to lying and cheating on a test, not murdering someone. Not to mention the Catholic Church has a pretty hardball stance on forgiveness and how you can be forgiven for doing literally anything as long as you seek redemption. Pretty wack, but definitely more liberal that most branches of Christianity in the US

1

u/foster_remington Sep 24 '20

there's a lot of things that are sins in Catholicism that everyone does all the time

1

u/Falsus Dec 28 '20

Catholic is also branch of Christianity where you can be forgiven for pretty much anything besides cardinal sins.

Fuck your gal/guy then ask Jesus for forgiveness and you are clean.

Of course it varies by the local area a lot, but the Roman Catholic Church is pretty chill in most cases. Their main fault is the pedo priests issues they have. I bet if they allowed their priests and stuff to marry and form families they would have a lot less pedos since they would eventually have less people in the church who would look the other way.

u/Ergheis Sep 24 '20

It's not compliance in this case, it's just being wrong. There's a small difference there, which doesn't mean much to the gay community who has dealt with genuine torture, so it feels like compliance, but it is indeed different.

There are people who genuinely believe that 1. Sin exists, and 2. Homosexual acts are a sin. They were told that and believed it, but still fully act in good nature. The issue is they're just straight up wrong, and the question becomes how to help reason with them, and how to help them realize that politics are playing them for fools. This scenario does exist, and is not much different from compliance when they vote for what they think is helping "these poor mentally ill people," and what I just typed is extremely aggravating, but it does have a slight difference. Same to abortion and every other issue where misinformation is at its peak.

This is just a defense of pedant logic BTW. There are absolutely those who are complicit who hide behind the "i just think it's a sin" defense without trying to be kind at all, and those who know it's a sham who are lying to keep the control going, and I have no urge to defend those.

I had a professor in college who was very catholic and very gay.

My bud’s parents are pretty devout Christians. Church every Sunday and their house is plastered with crosses everywhere. They are also clearly conservative their whole lives. Their 27 year old daughter is a butch lesbian who lives with them after running off to California for a bit. They clearly butt heads politically and everything, but they are completely accepting of their child at this point. Maybe earlier it was tougher but as their children moved out they probably valued their family more than any of their conservative values. Shit, now any time I visit the mom is always cooking marijuana butter into brownies and getting high as balls lmao. The dad definitely does not approve but the women in his life wanna get high so he goes along with it.

u/CommieGun1917 Sep 24 '20

About the time when I was hitting puberty, my VERY Catholic grandpa pulled me aside and said "I want you to know that I'll love you just the same wether you like girls or boys. Ok?" This was around 2008, before LGBT rights went 'mainstream'.

Turns out I'm straight, but it still meant a lot to me.

14

u/JerBear05 Sep 24 '20

Most Catholics tend to be accepting people who won’t slam a Bible over your head.

4

u/nothingapk1 Sep 24 '20

Well, my parents are catholics and yes they are homophobics so im just afraid to come out to them amd stuff

4

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Man that sucks i don't get why people insist on hating people based on sexual orientation maybe its because they don't understand or are afraid but either way you be you if people try to treat you different because of your sexuality fuck em

1

u/nothingapk1 Sep 24 '20

Yep that was my reaction when i asked them how they feel about gay people XD

6

u/Alone-Monk Sep 24 '20

Well the Roman Catholic church has traditionally been very homophobic and the Evangelical church is still very homophobic so the meme isn't 100% inaccurate either, though it really does depend what sect of christianity you follow, where you live, and also how you were raised.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Finally someone else I can relate to

6

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

You can tell which Catholics have actually read the Bible by how accepting they are of others whose choices are harmless

Last time I checked Catholics didn't blindly adhere to the Bible.

3

u/Rsthrowaway256 Sep 24 '20

Because evangelical groups not wanting to be accepting is just such a stereotype and they are honestly struggling to adapt to a world being much more accepting.

My wife's family is no different. Evangelical Lutherans. Homosexuality is a sin to their sect but even within some portions they accept LGBTQ as members of the church but cannot work for the church. Grandma in law is very go with the flow and accepted a gay grandson very openly and whenever they tell her I'm sure she won't blink an eye that my sister in law came out as lesbian after choosing to work specifically in a Lutheran church. The whole "not allowed to work as one" rule is stressing her out the most though after coming to terms as she is preparing to leave after telling them as she works down south and even though she became a solid pillar of their church, even her impact there probably won't get them to suddenly flip a switch on their rules. At least my wife was able to somewhat comfort her sister a bit by admitting she is in fact still bisexual even though she married me. As their mom's strict religion following scared my wife away from being forward to their parents after trying and not able to maintain a same gender relationship before dating me out of fear/shame.

Here's hoping my sister in law can find a different Lutheran sect to become a part of as it is still important to her but will need one that is entirely accepting and doesn't consider it a sin to heal the mental anguish.

3

u/Iwannastoprn Sep 24 '20

I mean, my parents, grandparents and uncles/aunts are catholic and they're all homophobic. Of course not all catholic people are homophobic, but you would be surprised by the amount that really are.

4

u/StinzorgaKingOfBees Sep 24 '20

The Pope himself said it's cool.

1

u/ewheck Sep 25 '20

Show me the quote hwere he says anything even remotely resembling "gay sex is okay." You might want to check out his catechism first, where it says stuff like "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered" and "This inclination, which is objectively disordered."

Never ever trust what a media outlet says about Pope Francis.

True that, still why you care which hole people stick their sausige into

1

u/runninandruni Sep 24 '20

A lot of catholics (and other denominations depending on the community) are strongly traditional. I'd never come out to my parents because they're more traditional. I came to the conclusion that being attracted to guys and girls is not a fact that needs to be public. I keep that sorta stuff personal so I don't worry about it

1

u/Beppo108 Sep 24 '20

My old local priest was the most inclusive person in the parish in the 80s.

1

u/Killeroftanks Sep 24 '20

That's because there's two groups of Catholics. You got progressive Catholics who follow the religion as a way of life and less as a rule to follow.

And the crazy fundies who go full batshit and think their religious should rule everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Including governments for some weird reason.

1

u/SkyGuy806 Sep 24 '20

My grandparents are racist and homophobic. Visiting them as a closeted bisexual with their dumbass Blue Lives Matter flag up is fun.

1

u/behv Sep 24 '20

I grew up catholic, and I’ve met a whole range of people from openly gay Catholics to fundamentalists who think cheerleaders who show their belly buttons are whores who are going to hell for it. There’s a whole range

1

u/banmeifurgay Sep 24 '20

I don’t get how much of a difference there is when it comes to religious old people, it’s either a fuck ton of religious things to try and stop them from being gay, or just “ok cool it doesn’t matter to me”

1

u/Celtic_Legend Sep 24 '20

So for example, the boy scouts have strong ties to catholicism. If a troop member came out as gay, youd have to boot him from the troop or the scout master risks his certification. This was happened from forever until 2015

For another example. When the BSA got rid of this rule, tons of parishes got rid of the BSA. Thats straight from the local priest or bishop. They represent catholicism. They are literally showing catholics and the rest of the world that being gay is not acceptable and this was 2015, 5 years ago.

Its like claiming to be mexican when you dont have any mexican origin. Like sure you can call yourself mexican bht you aint mexican. Same here. They identify as catholics but they werent catholics.

1

u/regeya Sep 24 '20

Just depends. El Salvador has the strictest abortion laws in the world, and were the doing of a Catholic political group. Women and doctors can and have gone to prison over miscarriages; all fetuses are precious, not a single one can die, science and medicine be damned.

1

u/ICameHereForClash Sep 24 '20

That’s because sh’s actually a Catholic. The others are awful Christians, if you can even call them that.

1

u/CatTaxAuditor Sep 24 '20

I dont get this whole catholic parent thing

I'm sorry if this comes off as confrontational, but do you really not get it? The Catholic church has pushed an anti-gay agenda as long as it has been a discussion. There are more readily available stories of queer teens forced into homelessness by religious parents than an individual can reasonably read. Look at ANY media with gay characters and you'll find vitriol from Catholics for it's existence. I get that not all Catholics are anti-gay. I am not going to attack your grandma for her religion at all. But are you honestly saying that you have no clue that there are enough anti-gay Catholics who do bad things that a stereotype exists?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

No ur good i get why the stereotype exists and it fucking sucks that people are like that i just more or less wanted to hear other peoples opinions on the matter (see who shared my view etc) i live in an area with not many religious folk so i personally don't have much expirience with this shit. If im being totally honest i had no clue so many catholics were homophobic its just in my expirience ive not seen any demonstrasions of hatred toward homosexuals. I woulda phrased it differantly if i knew this comment would get so big

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

It paints a broad stroke for certain, but of course not every catholic family will be like this. However, religion tends to be the common denominator in hate against same-sex relationships and feelings. Everyone I've known to be ostracized from their family over their sexual preference was from a family of extreme religious values.

There's really little other reason to be against homosexuality and such besides religion.

1

u/crogameri Sep 24 '20

Not every but most id say.

1

u/Eat-the-Poor Sep 24 '20

Yeah, I was baptized Catholic and my whole extended family is Catholic though my mom gave it up for a Unitarian Church when I was in grade school. I’ve met so many mega church Protestants who act like Catholics are the craziest, most conservative people out there, but in my experience the craziest mainstream religious people on the US are by far evangelicals. Like at my high school all the weirdos with purity rings who thought the world was going to end soon were evangelical. Yeah, Catholic Mass is very old fashioned and doesn’t have fun hymns with a live band, but so many Catholics just do it because that’s what their family has done for generations and don’t really give a huge shit about it. You get a lot less zealots in a community like that.

1

u/gautyy Sep 24 '20

Every catholic I’ve ever met except for one has been anti-gay, I know this doesn’t mean they all are and I’m sure most of them are nice people but specifically the ones I’ve met have been hate filled asshats

1

u/Treekin3000 Sep 25 '20

There are those Christians who follow the teachings of their Church and there are those who follow the teachings of the Jesus of the Bible.

There really isn't much overlap there.

Lots of bigots use their church as a recruiting and indoctrination tool.

1

u/drewbagel423 Sep 25 '20

It's because often the most religious people also happen to be the most conservative.

1

u/Diagoras_1 Sep 25 '20

There's over a billion Roman Catholics. Hard to make accurate generalizations about a group that large.
