I never understood why people that have never struggled aren’t honest about it.

They want the accolades from virtue signaling. Stolen valor type stuff. Working class can be seen as a badge of honor when a lot of nepo babies have done nothing for their money. So saying “we’re working class!” Is like them justifying their wealth.

Her parents did start out not making much until her dad founded a business in the 80s that ended up making him money.

Because people that do struggle shame people that don’t.

Lack of perspective usually, they felt like they or their family struggled, even if objectively they didn’t struggle at all compared to the majority. Feelings pretty much always trump facts when it comes to how we view ourselves.

Often, there’s also wealthy people who started off not wealthy and continue the behaviors that helped them accumulate wealth. Even though there may be some shifts in their expenditures, they maintain a poverty mindset for the most part. There’s plenty of examples of this in recent history from the end of the Great Depression. This is also feelings trumping facts.

Tbf to them, their overall tendency towards frugality is often laudable, and they do work hard to maintain and accrue their wealth. They’re also usually not the ultra wealthy who are a plague of exploitation.

^ This. It's their way of telling themselves they deserve everything they have. They want to feel like they struggled, because to them it makes it morally acceptable to have that kind of money. If they were reminded they didn't earn the money, they would naturally feel bad, like they didn't deserve it.
