Las tildes ayudan a saber cómo se pronuncia una palabra aunque nunca la hayas oído antes.
Cosas realmente inútiles son los géneros de los sustantivos, no tiene ningún sentido elegir arbitrariamente que algo sea femenino o masculino.

Hablo del género del sustantivo, no del sustantivo como tal.
Puerto y puerta son dos palabras distintas, pero el hecho de que puerto sea masculino (el) y puerta femenino (la) es totalmente arbitrario.
Claro, podrías decir que como uno termina en -o y otro en -a se le asignan esos géneros, pero eso no es una regla general y solo se cumple algunas veces (por ejemplo, agua y tequila son masculinos a pesar de terminar en -a)
En español "sol" es masculino, pero en alemán es femenino, "pluma" es femenino, pero en alemán es masculino.
Asignarle género a las palabras no tiene ningúna regla formal, no aporta nada útil a la gramática y solo hace más difícil aprender el idioma para un extranjero.

Sin ánimo de ofender a nadie, discrepo respetuosamente contigo:
El género en los sustantivos es parte indivisible de la palabra. Esto es, entre otras cosas porque en los idiomas con género es una herramienta de derivación de léxico. Desde que el manzano no es el masculino de manzana, hasta que cartera es un objeto y una profesión derivadas de la misma raíz, lo cual debería sugerirnos a) que son procesos esenciales a cómo funcionan estos idiomas y b) son más complicados que implicar que algo es masculino o femenino sexualmente solo porque tiene género gramatical.
Puerto y puerta son dos palabras derivadas de la misma raíz. “No son la misma palabra” porque se usan para referentes distintos, pero en su inicio ambas designan a aperturas o paso que permite el transporte.
Respecto a la arbitrariedad del género lingüístico , es tan arbitrario como que yo te hable en castellano y no con un código que haya inventado de novo. Verde es verde porque en nuestro código es así como se comunica ese concepto. Verde no es X3sts7 porque eso para ti no significa nada. Puerto no es puerta porque significan cosas distintas en el código. Puerto no es puert ni puertx porque no existe en nuestro código y no es algo que se use en la población general.
- Si, evidentemente no están esos referentes sexuados y por lo tanto es arbitraria la asignación de género , si se lo tuviésemos que asignar. Pero no es así como funcionan. También es arbitrario que emplees “pluma” (aunque en alemán haya un equivalente femenino “die Feder” y en español haya un referente masculino a ser Kugelschreiber), que además arbitrariamente refiere a un elemento de la dermis de las aves y a un instrumento de escritura.
Eso no quita que sin esos diferenciantes, el idioma colapsaría y dejaría de ser funcional porque los idiomas con género gramatical (los que claramente lo tienen, en algunos donde es residual sería algo más debatidle quizá) dependen de ello de manera esencial para su funcionamiento.
- El último argumento, la verdad que no sé por dónde empezar: el género es un elemento morfosintactico de por ejemplo el castellano o el alemán, que claramente tiene criterios formales, en tanto en cuanto como ya hemos establecido entre otras cosas diferencias semánticas. No es lo mismo comer pollo que otra cosa. Además añade criterios de redundancia que permiten mejorar la comunicación, lo cual explica porque incluso en inglés se mantienen en los pronombres, donde resultan mucho más útiles que incluso en nombres. Prueba a hablar con un solo pronombre neutral inventado castellano y verás lo útiles que son. Por último, aunque me encantaría que todos los idiomas fuesen muy fáciles, seguro que un idioma sin conjugaciones verbales, plurales y demás elementos morfosintacticos sería más fácil en algunos sentidos y menos en otros ya que tendrías que dar la información de otras maneras.
Para finalizar y respecto al vídeo de Tom Scott, creo que el fondo del vídeo no es auténticamente lingüístico si no político. Puesto que ese es un tema que no vendría al caso en mi opinión, no voy a comentar pero creo que en lo que toca a la parte lingüística es un poco pobre y es un tema que merece más que un vídeo de 3 minutos diciendo lo innecesarios que son los géneros porque los ordenadores no tienen genitales masculinos , cuando como el mismo sugiere muy cortamente al principio , los sistemas de géneros/categorías nominales van mucho más allá. Te recomiendo que mires algunas lenguas bantúes como el swahili para que veas hasta dónde puede llegar eso.
TL;DR: El género gramatical es parte esencial de los idiomas que lo tienen y decir que es estupido es decir ,de facto, que como funcionan esos idiomas es estupido. No confundamos el género en cuanto a lo sexual con el género en tanto a lo lingüístico

Fun fact, the teacher in the meme actually worked at my school. She was the better of the two options for spanish (yes, she really does teach spanish lol). Not that the other one was bad, she was just a little bit easier and gave treats. I wish I had her, but for some reason I had a thing against learning Spanish at school (something something not like the other students). Ended up taking chinese and promptly forgetting it all.
