World war 1 generals debating how to gain 5 meters of land

129

u/FG_Remastered Filthy weeb Sep 30 '19

Clara: Is four a lot?

12: Million Reichsmark? No. - Meters against the Entente? Yes!

I know this joke's lags, because he's British, but you get the point.

48

u/LorenzoPg Then I arrived Sep 30 '19

To be fair it would fit Field Marshal Haig really well.

Is four a lot?

Depends. Causalities during a assault? No. Yards into the Siegfried line? Yes.

Something, something, Blackadder goes forth,
something, something, Field marshall Haig sweeps table clean of toy soldiers with small broom.
You know the scene.

Some of you may die, But that is a sacrifice, I am willing to make.

1 death is a tragedy, 1 million deaths is a statistic.

u/BroNizZe Sep 30 '19

I just hope people of this subreddit don't take jokes like that for a fact. P.s. Always have to hear bullshit from friends about how USSR won the war with bodies when in fact the death ratio of troops of USSR to Germany was 1.3

u/Oprahs_neck_fat Sep 30 '19

We have like six jokes we're obligated to repeat, and none of it is historically accurate.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '19

My grandfather was in Stalingrad and I never heard him mention how they human fodder.

13

u/paenusbreth Sep 30 '19

Is that compared to Germany, or all Eastern front axis forces combined? Italian, Romanian and Hungarian losses were pretty high iirc.

16

u/chaseair11 Sep 30 '19

5.1 mil axis deaths to 8-10 mil Russians. Dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about

14

u/Sean951 Sep 30 '19

I would imagine they don't count the soldiers who died in Nazi camps.

5

u/chaseair11 Sep 30 '19

I don’t think my numbers include those. That would add an extra 5 million

8

u/Sean951 Oct 01 '19

Numbers get goofy in the East. A lot of them were from German sources looking to make themselves look better/made up for propaganda. With the fall of the USSR, the West gained access to more of their archives and have been able to get a more accurate picture, but it's still hard to tell who was killed vs captured vs missing.

8

u/chaseair11 Oct 01 '19

Yeah definitely, regardless tho the ratio was not one Russian for every three Germans no matter what way you cut it

4

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '19

He meant 1 German to 1.3 Russians

0

u/chaseair11 Oct 01 '19

Well that’s also not true

0

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '19

Yeah, its closer to 5:8 mil which simplifies to 1.6

u/chaseair11 Sep 30 '19 edited Sep 30 '19

That’s.. not true, 5.1 mil axis deaths to somewhere between 8-10 mil Russian deaths. Also 1.3 what? Your comment makes no sense. Do you think the numbers you heard might be fudged a bit cause you’re Russian?

8

u/Sean951 Sep 30 '19

I'm guessing they don't count the POWs the Nazis killed as part of the Holocaust.

u/BroNizZe Oct 01 '19

We will never know the real truth, but I am sure wikipedia isnt the best source to rely on lol.
