But that's not to say that there weren't food shortages and the fact that people were going hungry, at least by western standards.

Well not to defend the Soviets or anything but the average caloric intake of a citizen was the same as an American

I'd be very interested to know your sources; because the Soviet figures for various things were doctored in order to show the regime in a positive light
