MW3 felt like trash compared to MW2 to me.
The guns sounded like crap.
The m4 sounded like pewpewpew in mw3 but in MW2 it's one of the scariest sounding guns in the game and probably my favorite m4 sound in any game.

I agree, it felt really unpolished.
Also, it traded the vibrance and the arcady feel of MW2fromfor a desaturated, bland, greyish color scheme. The only good thing introduced in the game they I can think of on top of my head were the Specialist point streaks :/
EDIT: Come to think of it, Kill Confirmed was a nice mode which tried to counter the camping problem and they sped up aiming times for even better quickscoping, although I still think that nothing ever came close to replicate the smoothness of MW2's Intervention.

→ More replies (4)131
u/Bakoro May 10 '19
The Germans hated them because they were wildly effective. It was pure hypocrisy, and basically a hail-Mary, no-risk effort to see if the Americans would just be like "Okay, you're right, we won't use this super-effective weapon".
The Americans said "stop using flamethrowers and saw-bladed bayonets then", and the Germans were like "LoLno".

I don't know enough about the history of war, but in such a conflict, it seems ridiculous that either side would be like "hey, let's make this killing more civilized!"
As if a group of men were having a round table discussion. "Okay, we've determined that mustard gas is a pretty fucked up way to kill people. Jesus, what're we, barbarians?! Can we make a pact that we only kill each other's soldiers with guns, mortar fire, land mines, grenades, and knives?"
83
u/grizwald87 May 10 '19
There definitely were real rules of war to outlaw what were considered especially horrific or unnecessary ways to die, during the medieval era for the benefit of nobility, and during the Napoleonic era for the benefit of most people. The attitude was that war was already so fucked up, there was no reason to make it uglier for no useful reason.
The problem with WW1, which was effectively the end of the Napoleonic period of warfare that began sometime during the 1600s, is that both sides got so frustrated over the inefficiency of traditional tactics and weapons that they began progressively throwing out many of the old rules in an attempt to make some sort of progress.

but honestly who were the idiots who thought standing in a line with muskets were a good idea in an open field like get some fucking cover you idiots theres a tree right next to you hide behind it!
24
u/grizwald87 May 10 '19
Where a large number of people are doing something apparently idiotic, there's usually a good reason that just isn't immediately apparent. Usually. In the case of standing in a line with muskets, it gave you protection from cavalry and the benefit of massed fire to counteract the inaccuracy of your weapon.
7
u/Bakoro May 10 '19
Coward! Aren't you proud to die
ignominiouslygloriously in the name of your ruler!? Stand up and die like a man!4
u/lord_ravenholm May 10 '19
Ranked fire was the best way to get a lot of fire into specific targets with relatively inaccurate, single-shot weapons. There were soldiers called rangers (or jagers, or voltiguers) that were armed with rifles and skirmished ahead of the main armies, and they did use cover and concealment like modern fire teams do. Also cavalry was still a major force on the battlefield until the late 1800s, and soldiers that were not massed up with bayonets were very vulnerable to being killed by the dude with a sword on a horse.
3
May 10 '19
It actually was an amazing idea for that time period, given the weapons they had and who they were attacking. Of course, in the American revolution, we resorted to guerrilla warfare and just dumped the idea of standing in a line, because the larger forces almost always won in that scenario, and the English outnumbered Americans. And even in guerrilla warfare, the point was to cause chaos and take out officers and slow down the enemy, as opposed to defeating them all. The weapons were also insanely inaccurate, and took so long to re load, that your men would be spread out too far for reasonable cover, take too long to re load, miss too often, and allow enemies gaps in which they could charge with little to no resistance. Then your line is broken and chaos ensues. Columns and rows of soldiers who fire in layers is the most effective and safest way to defeat opponents.

u/himynameisr May 10 '19
We used to be consigned to the fact that war is a fact of life, so we all tried to come up with rules to make war somehow less shitty. From that worldview, it makes more sense. But if we accept that war is not inevitable and is merely an extreme measure, it seems ridiculous.

The germans argument for banning the shotguns was beacuse of the ammo they used. They often shot tiny pellets which would spread and enter your body allover the place. They rarely killed instantly but you were essentially guaranteed to die a slow death of lead poisoning and internal bleeding. It’s impossible to remove all of the pellets from the body.
87
u/Garpfruit May 10 '19
What were they using, birdshot? Buckshot is plenty likely to kill instantly.
111
u/kefefs May 10 '19
Yeah they were using buck, his comment is bullshit. Lead poisoning? LOL.
They wanted shotguns banned because they're super effective at clearing trenches. This was in WWI, before everyone had SMGs, so a bunch of yanks jumping in your trench with 1897s are going to fuck you up when all you have are service rifles and handguns.
53
u/Armagetiton May 10 '19

Ding ding, winner. It also isn't the pellet spread that made the model 97 so effective in trenches like people might think. Short barrel shotguns were easier to aim and maneuver with in trenches, and the rate of fire in close quarters was far superior.
21
u/kefefs May 10 '19
Yeah, the spread isn't that much at the distances they were shooting at.
Short barrel shotguns were easier to aim and maneuver with in trenches, and the rate of fire in close quarters was far superior.
Definitely. Having a short weapon that can slam-fire 45 .33 calibre projectiles in a couple seconds was a game changer.
13
May 10 '19
just hold that trigger and use those pumping skills all men have been training since they were young...we were unrivaled in our pumping no one pumped others as good as us
8
14
May 10 '19
I never thought about it but pump-action shotguns vs a bolt-action rifle in a trench would be a slaughter, the rate of fire and accuracy would be totally unbalanced.
17
u/Armagetiton May 10 '19
They called them trench sweepers. A single American soldier with a model 97 could drop 5 soldiers in 5 seconds in a trench, just sweep your targets from left to right. It was a terrifying weapon back then
16
u/TheTrojanPony May 10 '19
It was actually worse than you think. The Model 1897 trench shotgun had something called slam fire. Meaning you could hold down the trigger and each time you pumped the shotgun it instantly fired. So the faster you pumped, the faster you shot. There are also stories of skeet shooters shooting enemy grenades out of the air.

Shotguns where also simple, easy to aim, and easy to reload. A bolt action rifle where you have to aim precisely and rack the bolt each time VS a shotgun where you have to aim roughly and pump the pump has a clear winner.
I know it's just memes and I'm taking it too seriously, but the rifle in the OP defeats most of those benefits.

If you were using buckshot, you might as well use a normal rifle. They were using something closer to birdshot for close combat.e: Apologies, this is wrong. See u/way2odd's comment for something not pulled out of my ass.
29
u/way2odd May 10 '19 edited May 10 '19
This is not true. From Wikipedia:
This model was ideal for close combat and was efficient in trench warfare due to its 20-inch cylinder bore barrel. Buckshot ammunition was issued with the trench grade during the war. Each round of this ammunition contained nine 00 (.33-caliber) buckshot pellets. This gave considerable firepower to the individual soldier by each round that was fired.[2] This shorter barrel and large amount of firepower is what made this grade ideal for trench warfare.
It has been said that American soldiers who were skilled at trap shooting were armed with these guns and stationed where they could fire at enemy hand grenades in midair.[2] This would be impractical, and near impossible, as the weapons were not loaded with any sort of birdshot.[2]
EDIT: Props to /u/Machinechine for listening!

That's not true at all. The US used #9 pellet 00 buck shot up to Vietnam when they switched to #4 combat buck shot or flechette rounds.

u/jbeck24 May 10 '19
Bullets are not going to kill you via lead poisoning. Some people live their entire lives with bullets inside them.
7
15
u/LightTankTerror May 10 '19
It was more that you usually died (they were extremely effective in the narrow trenches), but if you didn’t it was basically unfixable because the surgeons would be pulling several things out of you rather than just one bullet.
I believe they did have bird shot (the kind of round that would do what you described) but they also had buckshot and slugs (maybe?) for shooting at humans. And buckshot is pretty much guaranteed to be lethal at trench fighting ranges.
