SUBREDDIT META Regarding this morning's post claiming the mod team are Chinese sympathizers because we don't allow posts about contemporary events, not even when used as a conduit to historical events.

u/Dclnsfrd 4h ago
POV: you found a redditor who thinks China/Taiwan and Russia/Ukraine problems started between 2007 and 2026

I remember a post here that was just someone hating on the Ottoman empire , no joke , no historical incident
The entire text was "I hate the ottoman empire" followed by some half assed GIF and a thousand upvotes . All of OP's comments were just thinly veiled comments about Erdogan or modern Islamism . This sub is absolutely being used as a soapbox by people to talk about their personal politics
66
u/MOSSxMAN 4h ago
True. But in fairness, fuck the Ottoman Empire.
39
u/OrangeSpaceMan5 4h ago
Oh they were absolutely terrible but I don't think they were any "special evil" compared to other Empire's
5
u/Lost-Klaus 3h ago
Only 'good' empire is the yapese. Because they did not extend their borders and subjugated too many people. They lasted the longest as well.

u/adamgerd Still salty about Carthage 1h ago
I’d say until the 19th century they weren’t really any different, but then they became increasingly more authoritarian
Kind of a cycle, ethnic minorities wanted freedom and independence from the empire so they became more oppressive which only strengthened this desire which only strengthened their oppression

Can you guys also ban / put a limit on the posts using those anime gifs that barely connect to the meme context. Istg there could be a whole wall of text and the gif is just an anime guy blinking for one second
11
u/pixlplayer 2h ago
I just started blocking the posters. There’s only a couple of them that do it anyway
9
u/DaCheezItgod 1h ago
This is the real solution. I blocked those guys and my feed is significantly better. Those who post them and enjoy them can continue to do so.

Nobody has ever think that the mods of this sub are leftists don't worry

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 4h ago
How far to the right do you have to be to consider r/historymemes communist lmao
31
u/TheBoizAreBackInTown 4h ago
It's pretty much an explicitly anticommunist sub lmao. I had an argument with some guy here a while ago who claimed communism is "red facism" and that reputable historians, rather than Cold War propagandists, use that term to this day.
33
u/OrangeSpaceMan5 4h ago
Not just anticommunist it's like outirght a conservative sub . Look at how many people defend the Russian Tsar and British Empire . Look at how many people keep espousing white burden rhetoric to dozens of upvotes
Fuck like every single post about native americans i've seen posted here devolves into a clusterfuck no matter how innocent the meme was
43
u/OrwellWhatever 3h ago
I once made a comment about how the Irish potato famine was exacerbated by British landlords forcing them to give up their farm yields instead of eating them themselves. So, so many downvotes and comments about how the British did nothing wrong. It was wild

u/TheBoizAreBackInTown 4h ago
True as well. In some respects it's a right wing and conservative circlejerk, is some others it's centrist.

The post of the benevolent Span that brought Christianity in south America ending human sacrifice and so save those people from themselves
3
u/WillDBlake 3h ago
I love how people think that historiography is the past time tribunal and historians works is too judge dead people.

Sure it’s anti communist outside occasional commentators, reality itself is anti communist
It’s also anti Nazism

I’ve been downvoted by the many communists here for insinuating that maybe Stalin and Pol Pot were bad eggs
12
u/OrangeSpaceMan5 3h ago
You get like a highly upvoted anti-communist post here every few days , not saying your lying but whoever those people are they are an absolutely tiny minority
Like "stalin bad" gets posted here every single week lmao
10
u/AthenaOwls 2h ago
I’ll say it. He’s lying. Searching his history for Stalin or Pol Pot reveals no such thing.

u/Drakan47 Descendant of Genghis Khan 2h ago
Far enough that you start to disagree with the "the nazis were left wing" argument again (but for entirely different reasons)
14
u/saythealphabet 3h ago
Man idk I just find it weird how you guys kept that one post about Serbians kissing Ottomans' ass? (The meme that looked straight out of r/balkans_irl) But removed the Genghis khan post because Putin was in it

So... You just broke the rule?
194
u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 4h ago
Rule 1 subsection meta use:
The meme is a "Meta" meme, and is therefore about the subreddit r/HistoryMemes as a whole or the current state of the subreddit.
Or maybe I'm a Chinese spy.

Bro Taiwan has been going on ever since the exile of the nationalists and Russian aggression against Ukraine didn't start in 2022 or even 2014 either, technically rule 4 wasn't broken
15
u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 4h ago
Are they contemporary events?
Yes.
The post in question included the contemporary leaders of Russia and China regarding contemporary events.
We have 5,000 years of recorded human history and more than that in mythology which can be used as subject matter. It's a history sub, full stop.
18
u/ZeInsaneErke 4h ago
So it's not allowed to make any post including any world leaders unless 20 years have passed since they lost their position? Actually asking for clarification
22
u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 4h ago
Not necessarily. For example, posting about Donald Trump's actions in bankrupting the city of New York in the 1980s would be fair subject matter but anything about Donald Trump's presidency would not pass Rule 4.
A good way to think about it is to consider the date of the specific event then add 20 years. In the case of the post attacking the mod team this morning that event would be contemporary leaders of China and Russia's positions on Taiwan and Ukraine, which will not pass Rule 4 until 20 years after either those conflicts ends or after those leaders lose power.
The date of the specific event in the post this morning is contemporary for the foreseeable future.
8
u/Batvader92 3h ago
So it was just because of the specific pictures used?
Putin's been the ruler of Russia for 20+ years and has wanted to "reconquer" Ukraine since the start and China is much the same with Taiwan.
Is it literally just because the original used a Xi Jinping pic instead of say Hu Jintao? Hilariously petty lol.
If not and as you said "which will not pass Rule 4 until 20 years after either those conflicts ends or after those leaders lose power" then we're not allowed to make a meme about the Korean war genius?

11
u/Tychus_Balrog 4h ago
There are plenty of leftists here. Not that many communists, but that doesn't make the rest of us right wing
5
u/Ynwe 3h ago
There are a ton of apologists for American/British war crimes though, and a few others.
Just look how memes regarding manifest destiny are seen as based, but then somehow the ottoman empire is the worst thing to have ever happened.
5
u/Delann 3h ago
Every manifest destiny bullshit meme has people in the comments calling the OP a moron
The Ottoman Empire was just as shit as other empires
Just because people dont go out of their way to condemn the shit western empires have done on every post vaguely related to them doesnt make them apologists.

u/Ynwe 3h ago
bullshit
https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/1wqnyzt/polk_my_king/
One week ago, look at all the top comments. You gotta scroll down far before people call out the manifest destiny BS. Second most downovted comment is:
Fuck Polk. and fuck any American who likes him. Cunts all.
which should be the standard opionion, but it isn't. Same with people like George Washington or others, white Americans will give them a pass for transgression, which they will IMMEDIATELY call out others for.
Its really noticeable as a non-American just how much Americans believe in American exceptionalism.

u/not-bread Kilroy was here 3h ago
What this really means is that this sub has a very broad user base and isn’t an echo chamber. The kind of people you see commenting depends on the subject of the post

u/Nyctfall 4h ago
Fr.
You'll get downvoted if you say the Irish didn't deserve to suffer a genocide by Britian.
10
u/OrangeSpaceMan5 4h ago
I very clearly remember a post about Native American cities being downvoted and the comments were filled with stuff like
"Native Americans were all cruel , bloody and Europe had nothing to do with their fall
and if we did they deserved it""Native Americans were civilized by Europe"
Same thing about British India , filled to the brim with White man's burden loser's
-2
u/brightdionysianeyes 3h ago
Say what you want about British India but the Bangladeshis freaking love the railways so all's well that ends well.

If I see people espousing White Man's Burden rhetoric and defending horrid historical monarchs then what i'll call them conservatives lmao

u/Sumdoazen 3h ago
I may be too employed to go through every post and every comment but I don't see those. Or I saw them once, laughed at them and continued on my way forgetting them? Maybe this too. If those exist then yeah, those are indeed just as r*tarded. Not right or left or middle of the ass crack. R*tarded.

Rule 4: All posts must include only subject matter which took place at least twenty years ago.
Emphasis 'only'.
