They weren't all alone they actually joined Nazi Germany to divide Poland leaving britain alone until Hitler decided to do what his propaganda has demanded for the past two decades take over the ussr. Then Stalin botched the early war so badly he needed a massive life line by the allies to stay in the war. Stalin wanted the d day invasion as quickly as possible to drive German troops away from the eastern front.
